Sela stared at me in shock. “How do you know about The Depraved Fiend?”
“Because I know pretty much everything about you, Sela…I believe I’m your guardian angel.”
“Such a thing doesn’t exist! Who are you really?”
I wondered if I could show her my wings like this. I willed them to be released and I could feel that they had. I hoped it didn’t happen while Enzo was holding me in my reality.
Sela’s eyes widened. “Oh my heavens! How do you do that?”
“I’m an angel, Sela. I’m here on earth for a different reason, but you have projected some of your powers onto me so that The Depraved Fiend won’t find you. I have to give them back to you so that you can defeat him and save the world.”
“So give them to me.”
“I can’t right now. I’m only astral projecting. I believe it’s one of your powers.” I smiled. “You are a very powerful woman.”
“Am I? I have fallen for two men and I don’t know which one is here to kill me.” She whispered. “I thought I was smarter than this, Celine.”
“Sela, I watched it all happen. You did nothing wrong. You just opened up your heart and that is never a bad thing. Love is one the best things in this entire world.”
“You’re in love?”
“Yes…and with a man I’m not supposed to be in love with. He lives here on earth and I was destined for the heavens.”
“And still you love him.” Sela smiled. “I think that’s beautiful.”
“It is! So don’t feel bad for the love you feel. That’s still real. It’s one of their loves that’s not and that is not your fault.”
“I suppose you’re right about that.”
“I am. So now it’s time to put an end to all of this and find out who really loves you.” I said.
“What do we do with The Depraved Fiend?” Sela questioned.
“We hold him until me and my friends arrive. The good thing is if he takes your powers now he won’t have enough of them. You’ve projected a lot onto me, so hopefully when we meet for real, you will still be powerful enough to take him on.”
“I’m actually really glad you’re here Celine. I didn’t want to do this alone.”
“You’re never alone. Your guardian angel is always with you.” I smiled. “I would hug you right now, but I would go right through you.”
“We will hug when you come for me.” Sela grinned. “Now let’s do this.”
We went into the study and the two men were still floating, but this time upside down.
“Sela, when are you going to release us?” Doran demanded. “I am getting light headed.”
She turned them right side up. “Better?”
“ Yes, my love.”
“So…um how do I know which one is The Depraved Fiend?” Sela asked me.
“Who is this?” Lev asked. “And why is she transparent?”
“She’s an old friend of mine. She’s going to help me.”
“Hello, Lev. Doran.”
“Hi.” They chorused.
“Um well…” I turned to Sela. “We have to somehow get them to reveal their powers.”
“Yes but how?” She whispered back.
“Great question. I am not sure.” I admitted.
“We could ask them questions.” Sela offered.
“Yes, you do that while I think of something.”
“How am I supposed to trust either of you?” Sela asked the men. “Why should I?”
“Sela, you know me,” Lev said. “You and I have fallen in love all these weeks. We tell each other everything, my love. We’re soulmates, remember? Why would I ever want to hurt you? You’re the single most important person in my life. I would do anything for you.”
“Wow, that was really convincing,” Sela whispered.
“Well, ask Doran the same thing.” I urged.
“Right. Doran, how do I trust you?”
“That first day, I had every opportunity to hurt you Sela. We were completely alone and I didn’t lay a finger on you…in that way of course. But remember when we were making love on the beach? How beautiful and intimate that was? How it felt like we were the only two people in the world? Just remember that when you ask yourself why you should trust me.” Doran whispered passionately.
“Um…that was also convincing.” Sela breathed. “Maybe it’s none of them.”
“Maybe it’s both of them.” I stated.
“What?” Lev asked. “That’s not possible…right?”
“Or maybe it is. Maybe The Depraved Fiend has possessed two men to ensure that you fall in love with him.”
“Is that a power he has?” Sela asked.
“I don’t know, but it’s best not to underestimate him.”
“Yes, that makes sense.”
“But if they were possessed, the question is when?” I said thoughtfully. “He can't actually be two people at once…unless…”
“Unless what?”
“One of them is the actual Depraved Fiend and the other is merely possessed. He was a normal man before the possession.”
“That sounds very possible, Celine but how do we know?” Sela asked.
“Hold on.”
I was using my energy once more and when I opened my hand there was forget me dust. Thank the heavens I could always conjure it.
“What's that?” Doran questioned.
“Forget me dust,” I smiled. “I'm going to sprinkle just a bit of it on you and ask you a question.”
“What question?”
“Well, I can’t tell you, then you’ll have a rehearsed answer.”
I blew just a bit of dust on both of them.
“Do you know who this woman is?” I asked, pointing to Sela.
“That’s Duchess Sela,” Lev answered “I work for her…admire her from afar. I believe I could love her.”
“Oh wow.” Sela smiled.
“Prince Doran?” I asked.
“Um…I’ve never seen this woman in my life. But I know the name Duchess Sela. She’s my betrothed. I am more than happy. She’s the most gorgeous creature I have ever laid eyes on. “ Doran smiled.
Sela turned to me.
“Okay, so I lied a little bit. There was some truth telling dust mixed in there.” I said.
“So they’re both telling the truth?” Sela asked excitedly.
“It would seem so.” I frowned.
Something wasn’t right. I knew there was a possibility that neither of them were the Depraved Fiend, but I just didn’t believe it. I wouldn’t be here if that was the case.
“Lev, why do you love Sela?” I asked suddenly.
“Well because she’s sweet and beautiful. She uses her powers for good and…she smiles at me and it makes my heart warm.”
“Hm.”
“Doran, why do you want to be with me?” Sela asked.
“Because you make me feel more alive than anyone else ever has. That day on the beach lit my heart on fire and made me really want to live. To have a life of adventure with the love of my life.”
“Celine, are you sure it’s one of them?”
“Yes, it has to be!” I whispered. “Wait. Lev, when did you come to work here?”
“Um…I don’t…I guess. I have no idea.” Lev whispered.
“Now why wouldn’t he remember that?” I asked Sela.
“Um, well time can be confusing and-”
“When did he come to work here, Sela?”
“In the spring. Nearly three months ago.” Sela whispered.
“He should know he came here in the Spring.” I said. “It’s him, Sela. He’s the Depraved Fiend.”
“I am not!” Lev shouted. “I-I don’t know what that is! Sela, please, I am not who she says!"
“I’m sure you don’t,” Sela shook her head. “You almost had me Lev. I thought you loved me.”
“I do love you Sela! I walk around at night in hopes you will come to walk too and I can talk to you under the moon.”
“I am done with your lies, Fiend! I cannot believe I almost let you take my powers.”
She lowered Doran to the floor. “So does that mean I’m not evil?” He asked. “I get to marry my Duchess.”
“I believe so.” Sela hugged and kissed him.
“We can have more days on the beach.” Doran smiled.
Wait a minute.
“Doran, this is the second time you’ve mentioned the beach,” I commented.
“So what?”
“You’re not supposed to remember that.”
Sela pulled away from Doran whose eyes suddenly turned black and a sinister grin came across his face.
“You’re smarter than you look…angel.”
