Enzo's POV
I was so confused.
How was Rafe my brother? He was only a year younger. And my mom would never cheat on my dad, right?
I watched in horror as Mom and Alpha Emmanuel kissed each other. What was she doing?! She was supposed to only love my Dad. Why would she do this?
I couldn't watch this any longer.
I turned around and stopped in my tracks, seeing Dad standing there behind me. He must have seen and heard everything I did.
He raised his finger to his lips to tell me not to say anything. Tears were in both of our eyes. Our whole world was crumbling and yet we stood in the hall with tears streaming down our faces and not saying anything.
I wanted to scream.
I didn’t understand how this could happen. How could Mom have a whole secret life outside of us? How could she have another son and yet claim that I was her whole world? How could she say Dad was her soulmate and yet kiss another man and have a child with him?
Dad pulled me to him and hugged me as I started crying quietly. He silently led me back to my room and sat me on my bed.
“What’s happening?” I whispered. “Why would she do this?”
“I don’t know, Enzo, I don’t,” Dad mumbled. “This doesn’t make any sense…I just…I don’t get it.”
“What do we do?”
“I’m not sure yet, Enzo. I’m so sorry, son.”
“She can’t love Alpha Emmanuel right?” I asked. “There’s no way. She loves you. It was just a mistake. She didn’t mean it.”
“She was kissing him.” Dad breathed.
“But she didn't mean it, I just know it. We’re her whole world, remember?”
“Turns out she has two worlds I guess. Try to get some sleep, Enzo.” Dad kissed my forehead before he left my room.
I couldn’t sleep at all that night. I was awake, crying and questioning my entire life. Every time Mom left for a few weeks, when she would get far off looks in her eyes, every moment she swore she was happier than she ever imagined.
Our whole family now felt tainted. Like everything was a lie.
How was I supposed to believe in love after this?
--
Dad was a much better pretender than I was.
At breakfast, he was smiling and laughing with Alpha Emmanuel as though they were best friends. I, on the other hand, was very quiet. I didn’t want to laugh or joke with any of The Grim Hounds, even Rafe.
I knew I shouldn’t be mad at him. It wasn't his fault that my mom and his dad had an affair. I guess I just hated that he knew. I hated that my mom was his mom too. I hated that he was my brother even though I had always wanted one.
“Are you okay, Enzo?” Rafe questioned. “You seem weird today.”
“Your mom’s dead right?” I asked.
“Woah, Enzo,” Grey frowned. “That’s a little rude, don’t you think?”
“I’m just curious. Rafe?”
“Um, yeah she is.”
“What’s that like?” I pressed. “Is it weird to just have a dad and not a mom?”
“Yeah, I guess, but I manage.” Rafe shrugged.
I hated that he was lying to me. I could tell he wanted to tell me the truth the way Alpha Emmanuel said. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Sorry I asked, that wasn’t nice,” I sighed. “I’m having a shitty day.”
“I have a lot of those,” Rafe offered. “It’s no problem at all.”
“What’s wrong?” Grey asked.
I ran my fingers through my hair. “I just have a bad feeling that my life is about to change severely.”
“But why?”
“Um, I don’t know. Just forget it, it’s probably nothing.”
--
Now that I knew about my mom and Alpha Emmanuel it was so obvious they were together.
They would share secret looks and touch each other a little more than needed. I could tell my dad was noticing the same thing. I could see in his eyes how furious he was becoming with every passing second.
“Um, how long are you guys going to be staying?” I asked suddenly. “Shouldn’t you be heading home soon?”
“I think we’ll stay another week,” Alpha Emanuel smiled. “Unless Ariana wants to kick us out tonight.”
“Oh stop it!” Mom giggled as she patted his hand.
I saw something snap in my father.
“I can’t do this anymore,” He declared.
“Do what darling?” Mom asked.
“Darling? Are you referring to me or Emmanuel as darling?”
“What do you-”
“I saw you last night!” Dad shouted. “I saw you kiss him! I heard what you said to him! You cheated on me and had a secret child!”
Rafe’s eyes widened.
“Antonio, we shouldn't talk about this in front of Enzo,” Mom whispered.
“He saw you too! He already knows all of the lies you told us!” Dad cried out. “How could you Ariana?! When did you even have the time for this affair?”
“When I went to take care of my father. You knew when we met that Emmanuel and I had something going on, but I just fell so deeply in love with you, but when I was taking care of my father Emmanuel was there. We rekindled what we had and I got pregnant.”
“That’s why you stayed so long…so you could have your love child in secret.”
“It was the only way. I couldn’t give him up. I thought I could give birth and let Emmanuel handle raising him but…I missed him so much.”
“And so you just kept seeing him. You lived a double life all this time. You pretended like Enzo and I were your entire world! But you had another family, another life without us.” Dad shook his head.
“Antonio-”
“And you!” Dad interrupted Emmanuel. “You came to my home and shook my hand like you weren’t sleeping with my wife!”
“You have to understand-”
“I don’t have to understand anything! You have ruined my marriage completely! You two played me for a fool this whole time. For eighteen years you two lied to me and had a relationship behind my back!”
“I’m sorry, Antonio,” Mom breathed.
“What about me?” I asked. “Are you sorry that you lied to me too? That you constantly said me and Dad were the only things you cared about? That you kept my brother away from me, knowing how much I wanted one! You’ve missed out on parts of my life because of this!”
“Sweetie, I’m so sorry!”
“No you’re not, you don’t care! I saw the way you kissed him! A-and you clearly like Rafe way more than you like me! I hate you!”
I stomped out of the room and Rafe followed me.
“Enzo, wait!”
“You lied to me too!” I shouted “You knew I was your brother the entire time!”
“I’m sorry, okay? I just didn’t know how to tell you…and maybe I liked that you didn’t know.”
“What the f**k does that mean?”
“You’ve gotten Mom for most of your life! She was there when you did your first transformation and you got to have breakfast with her. You could hug her whenever you wanted to! I didn’t have that luxury!”
“And that’s not my fault Rafe! I was born out of love and a marriage!”
“And what was I born out of?” He challenged.
“Betrayal,” I whispered. “I was meant to be here, but you…you were never supposed to happen.”
I started to walk away but I heard a scream from the dining room. Rafe and I looked at each other before running back.
I nearly threw up at the site in front of me. Mom was sprawled out on the dining room table, covered in blood. Her neck was bent in a strange way and she wasn’t moving.
“M-Mom?” I asked hurrying over to her. “Mom, wake up.”
She wouldn't budge. She was dead.
I turned to Alpha Emmanuel. “What did you do?!”
“You think I did this?” He asked. “This was your father’s doing! He was so consumed with rage he killed your mother!”
I looked around and saw he was nowhere in sight. “Where did he go?”
“I don’t know, but he better be hiding because if I find him…I will kill him.”
--
Everyone was on the hunt for my Dad.
I was too, but only to help him get away. Of course I was furious with him for what he did to Mom, but at the same time I understood. The rage and betrayal he felt must have been all consuming.
I walked through the forest with Grey.
“Are you okay?” He whispered.
“Peachy,” I commented.
“Enzo-”
“Grey, you know what I really don’t want to talk about this. My father murdered my mother because she was cheating on him. What is there to discuss? My life is f****d up completely.”
“Sorry.”
I felt bad for snapping at him, but I had enough going on without having a therapy session with Grey.
“Has anyone found anything?” Alpha Emmanuel shouted.
There was no answer, so I assumed no one had found Dad.
An hour later there was still nothing. We were going to head back to the packhouse when Rafe emerged from the bushes. He had a crazed look in his eyes and blood on his face.
“Son, what happened?” Alpha Emmanuel asked.
“I found him,” Rafe whispered. “I took care of it.”
“No!” I ran the direction he had come from.
I gasped seeing my father on the ground. His throat had been ripped out and his eyes were open.
How could this happen? Both of my parents were gone. And it was all their fault.
The Grim Hounds.
Anger raced through my blood as I transformed into my wolf. I ran back to the crowd and found Alpha Emmanuel. This was all his doing. He ruined my family.
I tackled him to the ground, growling fiercely.
“Enzo!” Grey called out.
I ignored him. I was going to get my revenge. Alpha Emmanuel tried to fight me off, but I knew if he did he would transform and I wouldn’t be able to take him. I had to use my advantage now.
I had never killed anyone before, but I started thinking about him kissing my mother, and lying to my father. Sneaking behind our backs and making us look stupid. That anger was enough to take over my body completely.
I thought of my father’s ripped out throat. Rafe would feel the same pain I did. I managed to pin Alpha Emmanuel down before clamping my mouth on his neck. With all my might, I ripped his throat out and tossed it.
Shrieks and screams surrounded me before I felt myself thrown off of Alpha Emmanuel.
Another wolf bared his teeth at me. I knew it was Rafe. I didn’t plan on physically hurting him but he clearly wanted a fight.
He swiped at me, but I dodged him before snapping at him. I could see the fury in his golden eyes. He might be just as angry as I was, but he wasn’t as strong. I had more training.
Rafe lunged for me, and clawed at his face hard. He yelped and recoiled as blood dripped from his eye. I had injured him pretty badly.
He transformed back into a human and I could see how bad the scratch was. I transformed too.
“You will pay for what you’ve done, Enzo!” He screamed. “I will avenge my father.”
“And I will avenge mine,” I whispered.
Rafe chuckled bitterly. “No you won’t. One day I am going to kill you and everything you have…what should have been mine will be!”
He turned and ran off deep into the forest.
“Should we go after him?” Grey asked.
I shook my head. “Let him go. I have to bury my father.”
--
I wasn’t exactly ready to be Alpha, but I really didn’t have a choice.
I had to take over the pack very suddenly. I tried to remember everything my mother and father taught me about leading. I couldn't let my pack down.
I watched closely as my pack trained. They needed to do much better, and I was going to get them there. We would be ready for anything Rafe would throw at us.
“Alpha Enzo, could you help me?” A voice asked.
I turned and saw Morgan Renaldo. Immediately I felt a connection with her. I think it was the mate bond. I could tell she felt it too.
“Come to my room later, I’ll help you.” I grinned.
She smiled back. “Okay.”
--
Morgan wasn’t too bad at s*x, but there was something I didn’t like about her, I couldn’t put my finger on it.
“I’m so excited,” Morgan whispered.
“For what?” I asked.
“To fall in love.”
I looked down at her. “Love? Love doesn’t exist Morgan.”
“Of course it does, babe.”
I sneered. “Babe? Don’t f*****g call me that. You know what, this isn’t going to work. I Enzo Laguardio reject Morgan Wallace as my mate.”
I felt a pain in my chest as the bond was severed. I could tell it hurt her too.
“Get out.” I whispered.
She got dressed and ran out as I caught my breath.
It didn’t feel good, but it was better this way.
Falling in love would probably hurt even more. My parents showed me that.
