On Trial

I started sobbing. I didn’t want to leave my life in The Cosmic Sanctum! Being an angel was all I really knew how to do! Crystal tears spilled from my eyes. “Please Archangels! Give me one more chance, I can make him fall in love!” “Celine, he has turned away six mates! Werewolves usually only get one and only sometimes two. We have given both you and Alpha Enzo multiple chances.” Archangel Aergos sighed. “He is a lost cause and it seems so are you.” “No, I’m not! Please just one more chance please!” I begged. “I mean seven is a lucky number right? So if we try to get him to fall in love the seventh time it will work!” I was just grasping at straws at this point. I just couldn’t lose my wings. Being a guardian angel was the most important thing to me. “What’s the point of that? What could you possibly do differently?” “I…I’ll figure it out, I promise! Just please, one more chance!” “You have one day to give us a good reason not to strip you of your wings,” Archangel Tiassa announced. “Tomorrow we will have your trial and your fate will be decided.” “A trial?” I cried. “But I’m a good guardian angel m-my record-” “Has been tarnished by your consistent failure!” Archangel Aergos snapped. “We will see you at your trial tomorrow, you are dismissed!” I was emitted from their chambers and back into the lounge room. What the heaven was I going to do? *** I went to the lavatory to pull myself together. I was a mess! My skin looked pale and pasty and my violet eyes were red from crying. My loose, curly auburn hair looked messy from having run my fingers through it so many times and my small pink lips were in a pout. “Get it together, Celine,” I whispered. “You can win your trial tomorrow and then you’re going to get Enzo to fall in love! You will get your white wings!” After calming down, I checked in on Enzo, hoping that he had a change of heart about Allison. I found him getting ready for his day. He put on his usual tight white T-shirt that showed off the muscles in his arms and his back and his grey sweats that made the bulge in his pants very prominent. He stared at himself in the mirror for minutes. He liked doing that. Just admiring how good looking he was. He was very narcissistic. There was a knock on his door. “What?” He called. “Alpha, it’s Beta Grey, may I come in?” I liked Beta Grey quite a lot. He was sweet and quite handsome. His curly dark red hair gave him a sense of innocence along with his freckles. He had an enticing smile and I found myself fascinated with the mole on one of his abs. But my favorite thing about him was his eyes. They weren’t grey like his name would suggest. They were light green and absolutely hypnotic. They were so warm and kind. Somehow they remained that way even under the stern rule of Alpha Enzo. “Sure, come in.” Enzo rolled his eyes. “What is it? The meeting isn’t for ten minutes.” “I know, but some of the pack members are concerned about your announcement last night-” “Beta Grey, is it your job to do what I say, or is it your job to tell me your opinions?” “Um well-” “It’s the former. I don’t care what you and the pack think of my decisions, I’m doing what’s best for the pack at the moment. My announcement stands.” Alpha Enzo barely even glanced at him. “Now have you found a new scribe or what?” “No, Alpha Enzo not yet,” Beta Grey looked at the ground. “Worry about that, instead of my choices huh? I’ll see you at the meeting in nine minutes, close the door on your way out.” “Yes, Alpha Enzo.” This was the man I had to get to fall in love otherwise I was facing damnation. How in the heaven was I going to do that? -- Being on trial was absolutely humiliating! Everyone I knew was there, either looking at me with pity or disdain. This fall from grace would hurt when I made impact. I smoothed out my skirt as my wings shook with anxiety. I still hadn’t exactly come up with a solution to my problems, but I was hoping some crying would help me out a little bit. “Silence!” Archangel Aergos shouted. Not a peep was made after that. “We are here for the trial of Angel Celine on the charges of being incompetent at her job. Angel Celine, how do you plead?” “Not guilty, Archangel Aergos,” I said shakily. “Very well,” He grunted. “For the last year and a half, you have had the same charge and you’ve only been tasked with getting him to fall in love and you have failed at that. We have given you six chances to help your charge and you’ve blundered at every turn! You have proven six times that you are not qualified to be a guardian angel and you and your charge are useless.” There were whispers and gasps at his words. If my wings weren’t holding me up I think I would collapse! This was disgracing! “You may now plead your case, Angel Celine.” “Um well…though I am a guardian angel, I’m aware that I’m not perfect. I was given a particularly difficult charge who clearly is insanely hard to please and therefore picky with who he falls in love with…but is that wrong?” I asked. “Shouldn’t mortals be wary of who they give their hearts to? I mean love is a battlefield and you want to have the best soldier with you right? My charge simply just needs a little extra help and then he will be satisfied.” “And what extra help do you suggest, Angel Celine?” Archangel Tiassa questioned. She actually sounded quite intrigued by what I had to say. Too bad I had no idea what the heaven I was going to say. "Well…I think if I was more involved with the process I could easily get Alpha Enzo to fall in love.” I stated. “And how would you be more involved?” Archangel Aergos practically demanded. “Um…I just feel like if I was with him, I could guide him in the right direction, as a guardian angel should, and then he would totally fall in love. Like, instead of this whole mate bond thing, maybe I could find a girl and make her into someone Enzo could fall in love with.” I stammered. I knew that was not a real answer, but I was just rambling in order to save myself some time. “Angel Celine…I see what you’re saying,” Archangel Tiassa said, nodding. Well, I was glad one of us knew that. “You’re saying you will go down to Earth and help him find the right woman to fall in love with. You will be with him directly to help him with this endeavor.” Going to Earth?! Oh heaven no! “Well, that’s not exactly what I mea-” “Hm,” Archangel Aergos hummed thoughtfully. “A hands on guardian angel. We haven’t had one of those in centuries. Maybe that’s just what this charge needs. Angel Celine, you will go down to Earth and infiltrate your charge’s life and help him fall in love. You will have one month-” “I’m sorry Archangel Aergos, that’s not enough time! Especially given this particular charge! It will not be easy.” I pointed out. “Fine…three months and not a day more.” “Three months…you know I think-” “Three months, Angel Celine.” I nodded. “Okay, three months.” “If you succeed, you will of course ascend and receive your white wings,” Archangel Tiassa informed me. “Unlikely,” I heard Sander comment. What a jerk. “And if you do not complete this task within the allotted time, you will officially be stripped of your wings and sent immediately to the Infernal Planes. No trial, no begging, no salvation. Only damnation, do you understand?” “Yes, Archangel Aergos.” I bowed. “Good. Your time starts now.”
