A Crush

“I-I don’t know!” I cried. “I just gave him ‘forget me’ dust!”
“We have to get rid of the others before they wake up,” Grey whispered. “We can’t risk another attack.”
“Grey…um go get the pack together so we can discuss this. Celine and I will handle this.”
“But how-”
“Just do it!” Enzo snapped.
Grey still looked confused but ran out of the Infirmary.
“Celine, you have to fly them away from here!” Enzo hissed.
“Where do I take them?” I asked.
“Just drop them in the middle of the forest or something, just far from here!”
I nodded furiously as I let my wings spring out. I grabbed the three men and Enzo looked surprised that I could handle that heavy of a load. Mostly it was my wings.
I flew out of the infirmary and flew as fast as I could away from the packhouse. When I felt like I was far enough I landed and dropped the men down. I wondered why Enzo wanted them to live, but didn’t have time to dwell on it.
I flew back close to the packhouse and sucked my wings back in before running to the infirmary.
“It’s done,” I panted.
“Okay, let’s go.”
He gripped my arm and pulled me along with him.
We met the rest of the pack in the meeting room.
“We are on high alert,” Enzo started. “The Hellions have taken down four of our pack members on their way to see the Bonepikes. Everyone listen to what Celine has to say about the Hellions.”
“I’m sorry, me?” I asked.
“You knew what had happened,”
“Um, okay. Hellions are…entities I guess. They take your darkest memories and flood your mind with them. Basically they put a curse on you…a curse you cannot wake up from. It poisons your entire body. Turns you almost feral. Convinces you if you kill the closest thing to you that you can get rid of the curse. It’s horrible.”
Everyone looked horrified.
“What do we do now, Alpha Enzo?” Grey asked.
“Rotate guards tonight and we’ll talk strategy in the morning. Everyone be careful and don’t go off the grounds, understand?”
“Yes, Alpha Ezno.”
“Beta Grey, Celine, my chambers now,” He stalked out of the room and we followed him.
“Okay Celine, explain what the f**k that was right now.” Enzo demanded as he poured himself a drink. “Why did he turn to ash?”
“I have this dust…’forget me’ dust. I thought if I made him forget the bad memories it would cure him. I don’t think the curse works that way. It thinks it kills you if you try to get rid of it.” I stated.
“You see Beta Grey, this is why we need the Bonepikes! They can actually take on the Hellions.”
“The Bonepikes are just as dangerous!” Beta Grey protested.
“Exactly. We need heavy hitters on our side.”
“What do the Hellions want?” I asked.
“Whatever the The Grim Hounds want them to.” Enzo answered darkly.
“Who are they?”
“Our rival pack,” Grey said quietly. “Ran by-”
“A cruel, vindictive man.” Enzo cut him off. “One we have to defeat.”
I felt like I was not being told everything, but I didn’t push it. I knew better than to pressure Enzo.
“So what are we supposed to do?” I asked.
“We’ll figure it out. Beta Grey, can you please give Celine and I a moment?”
“Of course Alpha Enzo.” Grey nodded.
Enzo waited a few moments after the door closed. “What happened back there?”
“I already explained the dust.”
“No, something happened when he was choking you. What was it?”
“It was…nothing,” I shrugged. “I was being choked and I was shocked, that’s it.”
I wasn’t sure why I was lying, but it felt like I had to. I couldn’t explain what happened because it never had before.
Enzo studied me. “Are you sure?” I nodded. “Okay, then.”
“Um, will that be all?”
“Ye-woah. Celine your neck!” He pushed my hair back and gently touched my throat. “It’s really bruised. Does it hurt?”
“I don’t know…I haven’t felt pain in so long. It doesn’t feel nice though.” I rubbed my neck and a strange light came from it.
Enzo’s eyes widened. “How did you do that?”
“Do what?”
“The bruises, they’re gone! Did you just heal yourself?”
“I guess so.”
“Is that normal?”
“Of course it is,” I stated. “I’m an angel. All the bruising is gone?”
“Lean your head back.” His fingers danced on my throat as he examined my neck. It tickled slightly but for the most part, felt kind of good.
“It’s gone…your neck is perfect.”
I put my head back up and we were face to face.
“Can you uh…look at girls at dinner?” I asked.
“Yeah, of course. Can’t fall in love just staring at each other right?” He whispered.
“Exactly. I will leave you to your Alpha duties. See you later.”
I left his chambers and Grey was waiting outside of mine.
“Hi Grey,” I smiled. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I just wanted to know if you were. That must have been really scary for you. I mean you don’t have a wolf so it’s hard to protect yourself.”
“I think I handled myself well, don’t you?”
He smiled slightly. “I guess you did kind of save the day. So I guess I should be thanking you huh?”
“We can thank each other.” I offered.
“True…um…I know it’s not my business but are you and Alpha Enzo like you know seeing each other?”
“Of course we are, we see each other all the time. And now I’m seeing you.”
Grey laughed. “You are so funny. I mean are you guys like you know…having s*x?”
“Oh heaven to the no! Not at all! We are just coworkers.”
This seems to make Grey happy. “Really? That's um…that's cool then. I was just curious.”
“I see. I should get to my chambers and rest.” I smiled. “But see you at dinner?”
“Yeah, of course.” Grey waved. “See you then.”
I went into my chambers and hurried to my mirror to check my reflection. Nothing was different. Dard red hair, pale skin, my eyes were still violet.
I didn’t look any different so why was I acting differently?
I couldn't tell Enzo, but seeing into that man’s mind was not at all normal. I was only allowed to see my charge’s memories and even then only ones that would be relevant to the endeavor I had to help them with.
That’s why I knew what happened with Enzo’s parents. For the most part it was why he could be so cruel and guarded. Also why he didn’t believe in love.
Another thing I didn’t tell Enzo was that I shouldn't have been able to heal myself. Angels have many powers and resources, but healing is not usually one of them. Maybe being on Earth was making my powers out of whack?
Whatever it was I had to get it under control and keep it to myself.

“I heard you were attacked today, Celine!” Paz stated. “I hope you’re doing okay.”
“Aw, thanks, Paz. I’m fine.”
“I heard you turned a man to ash,” Irene grinned slightly. “Is it true?”
“Kind of,” I admitted. “But it was an accident.”
“Hardcore.”
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” Mira smiled.
“It was Alpha Enzo. He kind of saved me.”
“You’re so lucky.”
I looked over at Enzo. He looked incredibly grumpy, but what’s new?
“Celine, can I ask…how old are you?” Paz questioned.
Two hundred and forty-nine, but I couldn't very well tell him that.
Of course I didn’t look that old. The first two hundred and thirty-five years of my life were spent perfecting being a guardian angel. Studying, reading, testing. No one realized that it wasn’t an easy feat! This was something you had to work for.
“Um…how old do you think I am?” I asked.
“I say twenty-two,” Irene said thoughtfully.
“Great guess, Irene, you’re right!”
“I knew it.”
“Well talking to you and Mira has been lovely, but I have to stare into Irene's eyes or I might die.” Paz informed me.
“Oh okay,”
“Aren't they so cute?” Mira sighed.
“They are,” I agreed. “They make love look easy.”
“Falling in love is very easy, but actually being in it…” Mira trailed off and sighed.
“I’ve never experienced any kind of love, honestly. I don’t think I’ve been given the chance. I’ve also been much too busy-”
I realized that Mira was not listening to me. Her eyes were elsewhere.
I followed her where she was looking and was shocked to see Enzo. She smiled watching him eat his food and talk to Grey.
“Mira…do you…have a crush on Alpha Enzo?”
“No, of course not!” She finally tore her eyes away from him.
“I think you do,” I laughed. “You were just staring at him.”
“He’s handsome."
“And you like him!”
She glanced around. “You can’t tell anyone, Celine,” She whispered. “And I don’t just like him…I’m totally in love with him, but he’ll never even notice me."
I perked up.
“I think I can help with that.”
