Prince Doran was interesting.
I thought he would be stuck up and conceited. That this was just an arrangement to him, but he seemed interested in actually getting to know me.
“What do you like to do?” He asked.
“Um, I don’t know. I like gardening, I guess. I’m not allowed to do much. I don’t ever leave these grounds.” I admitted.
“Why not?”
“My parents are very protective and afraid of what the world will do to me.”
“Because of your gifts.” I looked over at him in shock. “Everyone's heard the story of the Duchess in the castle. She’s hidden away from the world so no one tries to hurt her.”
“And you’re interested in that?” I asked.
“Why wouldn’t I be? I think you’re fascinating, Duchess Sela. And very beautiful. But you are in love with another man.”
“I am. I really love Lev. He understands me in a way no one else does.”
“You want to run away with him.” Prince Doran whispered.
“Maybe.”
“That’s dangerous, Duchess Sela. You’re kept here for a reason. If you were my wife, I would do everything to protect you. You cannot go out into the world not knowing who could hurt you.”
I found his words sweet, although I absolutely wanted to leave. I wanted to experience the world from outside these confinements.
“Have you been to the water?” I asked.
“Of course I have.”
“I haven’t. I’ve never seen the sunset on the water. Or touched a tree that wasn’t on these grounds. I’ve never touched sand or been to the beach.”
Prince Doran frowned. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think about that. There’s so much you haven’t done huh?”
“Yeah.”
He looked around before grabbing my hand and pulling me quickly.
“What are we doing?” I asked.
“You want to see the beach? Then I shall take you to the beach.” He grinned.
“We’re going to get in trouble!”
“So we better make it worth it then, huh?”
I giggled as we kept running. When we got to the gate, Prince Doran looked around again before putting his hands together, ready to hoist me up. Once we were both over the gate, we ran again until we were deep in the forest.
“I can’t believe we’re doing this.” I whispered.
“It’ll be fun.” Prince Doran grinned.
We walked for a while and then I heard the sound of the waves. “Are we close?” I asked.
“Very.”
A few minutes later I gasped. We were at an actual beach with sand.
I took my shoes off and lifted my dress up. My toes sank into the sand and I laughed. “It’s so soft.”
“It feels nice, right?” Prince Doran smiled.
We held hands as we walked along the beach. When we reached the water, I cried out, feeling how cold it was. The bottom of my dress was getting soaked.
“This is amazing, Prince Doran.” I sighed happily.
“Doran. You can just call me Doran, Duchess.”
“Just call me Sela.”
Doran gently pulled me to him. “This is beautiful, but it’s nothing compared to you.”
“Doran…”
He leaned down and kissed me and I let him. In fact I even kissed him back.
This wasn’t going to be as easy as I had previously thought.

My fluttered open and I looked around the room.
Where was I?
“Celine?” I turned to see Enzo. “Oh you’re awake!”
“What happened?” I asked.
“Rafe found us, I don’t know how. We had to go to a new hiding place so he wouldn’t get to us again. How are you feeling?”
“So tired,” I admitted.
“Must have been all the magic you were using,” He said. “You were incredible, Celine, you made all of them go away. Sela’s powers are insane.”
“Yeah, they’re also very exhausting.”
Enzo gently pushed my hair off my forehead. “Well you just get some rest, okay? You deserve it after all of that.”
I smiled up at him. “You’re being so nice to me.”
“Maybe I like you.”
“Maybe I like you too.”
The door opened. “Celine!” Grey smiled before hurrying over and kissing me. “How are you, babe?”
“I’m okay, I think. Very tired.” I laughed.
“You look amazing,” He kissed me. “I’m so sorry our birthday party got ruined.”
“Yeah, me too. I guess my first party was a bust.”
“I’ll um, leave you guys alone.” Enzo stated.
“But we’ll talk later right?” I asked.
He smiled. “Yeah, we’ll talk about everything.”
“Good.”
Enzo left and Grey smiled. “You guys are getting along again.”
“We are.”
Much better than we should be. I didn’t know if I should tell Grey about the kisses or not. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings at all.
“At least he’s getting along with someone.” Grey commented.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Him and Mira are arguing like crazy. She says something feels off and he says that she’s out of her mind.”
“Relationships can be so complicated.” I muttered.
“Yeah, they really can be.”

A few hours later, I was ready to leave the bed.
I wanted so desperately to spread my wings and fly, but the last time I did that I got attacked.
“I’m happy to see you better, Celine.” Pierce smiled.
“Thank you, I’m glad to be better.”
“You really saved us back there. Your powers are amazing.”
“Sela’s you mean. I’ll have to give them back at some point.”
“Will you miss them?”
“Maybe a little bit. They have saved me several times.” I laughed.
“They are very helpful.”
“Pierce, can I ask you something kind of personal?”
“Sure.”
“Why are Bonepikes…the way they are? Why do you eat people and use their bones?”
“I’m not sure, Celine,” Pierce admitted. “But we don’t do it to be cruel, it’s just in our nature. The same way it is in a werewolf’s nature to shift.”
“I don’t shift.”
“You’re not a werewolf.”
“I beg your pardon?” I asked.
“Celine, I can smell it on you. You are no werewolf, nor have you been one.”
“So…what am I?”
“Something magical and cosmic. You are not of this world.” Pierce grinned. “You’re ethereal.”
“That’s very nice of you to say but-”
“No need to lie to me. I won’t tell anyone. Though Alpha Enzo is aware, isn’t he?”
“How do you know?” I questioned.
“You two have a certain connection. Usually it’s a secret that creates one like it.”
“I see. Well I appreciate you keeping my heavenly secret.” I smiled.
His eyes widened. “You’re an angel?”
“Wings and all.”
“I can see why Sela projected her powers onto you. You are very deserving.”
“Thank you, Pierce.”
“Of course. You should go talk to Alpha Enzo.”
“What for?”
“There’s more to that connection than just a secret.” He winked before walking away.
What a know it all.

I decided to take Pierce’s advice and go find Enzo.
We really did have to talk about whatever was going on between us, no matter how weird it made me feel. Knowing was so much better.
When I spotted him heading to the forest I followed him. I stopped and hid behind a tree when I realized he was meeting up with Mira.
“Things are weird between us, Enzo,” Mira said.
“I don’t know why,” Enzo lied. “You seem like you’re always mad at me.”
“And you never pay me any real attention. Someone else is clearly on your mind.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean…I think you like Celine!” Mira blurted out.
“What? Celine? She’s-no, no babe. Th-that’s not true.” Enzo insisted.
“You are always with her and looking at her, Enzo. Come on, do you even like me?”
“Of course I do, Mira. I like you a lot.”
“Okay, but Enzo I love you!”
There was a pause.
“Well I love you too!” Enzo responded.
I did it.
Enzo was in love.
So why wasn’t I even remotely happy about it?
