“What the f**k is wrong with you?!” Enzo sputtered.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! I’ve never had alcohol before and that was the most hellacious thing I’ve ever had. It’s disgusting!” I gagged.
“Did you have to spit on me, you freak?”
“It was an accident! You wanted me to have s*x with you and I got nervous! I didn’t come here for this Enzo!” I stood up.
“What did you come here for?” He asked, rising to his feet.
“To help you fall in love!”
“With you?”
“No, we’re a terrible match! I don’t care who you fall in love with, I just need you to do it in three months!” I exclaimed.
Enzo looked confused. “For what?”
“So I can get my white wings!”
Great. One day and I had blown my cover. Maybe it was better this way? He wouldn’t fight falling in love so much.
“Wings? What the f**k are you talking about?” He demanded.
I closed my eyes and willed my wings to come back. They stretched out magnificently, in all their glory. Black sparkles fluttered down from them, covering the couch and the table.
“I’m an angel.”
Enzo’s eyes widened before rolling back in his head. He slumped down on the couch and didn’t move.
“Enzo?” I asked nudging him. “Enzo, wake up!”
Oh what the heaven was I going to do now?! Maybe I shouldn’t have told him. His small werewolf brain clearly couldn’t handle the righteousness of an angel.
So what did I do now?
“Alpha Enzo?” Grey knocked on the door. “Are you coming to dinner?”
I shook Enzo. “Please wake up!” I whispered, but he wouldn’t.
I had to get out of here.
I looked around for an exit and spotted the back door. I sucked my wings back and quietly hurried over. I opened the door slowly before slipping out of it and closing it.
I breathed a sigh of relief until I noticed someone saw me.
She just stared at me. I had seen her the day before when I first arrived. She didn’t sit with the mean girls at dinner. She was quite pretty. Wavy chestnut hair and striking blue eyes. She had a small nose like an elf and perfect pouty lips. So beautiful and yet she seemed so insecure. It was clear in the way she held herself.
Slumped shoulders, fidgety hands, nervous eyes. This girl was a work in progress.
“Um hi,” I waved.
“That was fast,” She commented.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean you just got here and Alpha Enzo has already had you.”
“Oh heavens no! That’s not what happened at all! I was just-”
“It’s okay, it happens all the time,” She shrugged. “He’s known for getting around.”
“Very true. I’m Celine.”
“I know. I’m Mira.”
“Nice to meet you. Can I sit with you at dinner?”
Mira looked taken aback. “Really?”
“Please?” I asked.
“Of course. Let’s go.”
We walked to the Dining Hall and sat at a table with only two other people. A boy and girl who didn’t even look up at us. They seemed to be staring into each other’s eyes.
“That’s Irene and Paz. They’re madly in love.” Mira informed me.
I studied them.
Irene was a very short girl with long dark hair and heavy eye makeup. She had dark brown skin and almost black eyes under black glasses along with being dressed head to toe in black clothing.
I think she was what mortals called a goth.
Paz was the exact opposite. He was incredibly tall and pale. His eyes were bright blue and his hair was blonde and went down to his shoulders. He was dressed in a bright green shirt and jeans.
I found myself confused. They were polar opposites and yet they were madly in love as Mira said.
“Are they mates?” I asked.
“Not the normal kind. They just fell in love one day and rejected anything that meant they couldn’t be together.”
“That’s beautiful.” I smiled.
“Yeah, it is. I wish I could be in love.” Mira whispered.
I noticed Grey and Enzo entering the room. Enzo looked a little flushed and Grey looked concerned for him. When Ezno’s eyes found me they widened. I quickly looked down at my plate.
“Alpha Enzo is staring at you,” Mira informed me.
“Oh is he? I didn’t notice.” I forced a laugh. “So, Mira, tell me more about yourself.”
“I think he wants to talk to you,”
I looked at Enzo again and he was staring wildly at me. I should have given him ‘forget me’ dust. This was making everything completely complicated!
“I’ll talk to him after dinner,” I shrugged like it was no big deal.
“Hey,” Irene said in a low voice. “I dig the black sparkles on your face.”
“Oh. Thank you Irene.” I smiled. “I dig your…black ensemble. It’s very scary but pleasant.”
“Thanks.”
“You give immaculate compliments my love,” Paz smiled at Irene. “I adore you.”
“My love for you burns like an aubade.” Irene stated.
“You spoil me, my cherry.”
“So that’s what it's like?” I asked. “To be in love?”
“I guess,” Mira sighed. “I’ve never been in it…I mean not really anyways. The guy I love will never love me back.”
“Why not?”
“He’ll never notice me.”
“If I didn’t have to make someone else fall in love, I would help you.” I offered.
“That’s nice, Celine. Thanks. I think we’ll be good friends.”
“Friends? Really?”
“Sure, why not?”
Yes. Why not?
--
“Come with me, Celine!” Enzo grabbed my arm and yanked me out of the Dining Hall after dinner.
I gasped. “You remembered my name.”
“Don’t get excited, Cecily!” He snapped.
“Um, Alpha Enzo, where are you taking Celine?” Grey asked from behind us.
“None of your business!”
We entered his quarters and he finally let my arm go.
“What the f**k are you?” He demanded.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“You had these giant bird wings, I saw them! Where are they?!”
He spun me around and frantically patted down my back. When his hands reached my butt I jumped away.
“There are no wings growing out of my rear end, Enzo!” I snapped.
Through strands of his dark hair, his amber eyes were lit up with a crazed look. “I know what I saw! You had giant black wings like a demon!”
I gasped. “I am not a demon! I’m an angel!”
“Ha! I knew it! Show me again!” Enzo demanded.
“You’ll just faint again.”
“No, I won’t.”
I sighed, but let my wings spread once again. Enzo looked as though he would faint again but he managed to steady himself.
“You really are an angel,” He whispered.
“Yes, your angel to be more specific. You’re my charge, I’m supposed to help you.”
“Why don’t you have white wings?”
“Because of you actually!” I snapped. “You keep rejecting your mates and I’m supposed to help you fall in love. If I make that happen, you can get rid of me and I can get my white wings.”
“That’s never going to happen,” Enzo whispered. “I don’t believe in love.”
“Sure you do, Enzo, that’s why you’re searching for your mate,”
“I’m not searching for anything. The mate bonds just keep happening. I take what I want from them and then I end it because I know it can never work.”
“Yes it can Enzo, love is real!”
“Yeah it was so real between my parents right?” Enzo asked harshly. “I assume you know all about them!”
I shook my head. "Only a little bit, not everything. I know what your mom did."
“So why the hell would I believe in love after that? Huh Celine?”
“I don’t know, I just thought you would,” I whispered.
“Well, I don’t. So don’t waste your time on me. Find a new charge.”
“I can’t Enzo! If you don’t fall in love in three months I’m going to be damned to The Infernal Planes. That’s hell!”
“I’m never going to fall in love,” He said firmly. “So this is a lost cause. You might as well go back to heaven or wherever the hell you’re from.”
“Enzo-”
“You should go.” He interrupted me. “Just go Celine.”
I sucked my wings back in and hung my head. I exited Enzo’s chambers and the door slammed behind me.
I was going to hell.
