Chapter 9: Perfume

Amy

“Okay. So let’s begin!” said by the owner of the coffee shop where I am planning to get hired. It had been a while since Anastasia had left us. But what I thought that the interview would immediately start when she’s already away, it didn’t yet happen when we heard a particular noise. It was a telephone that began ringing. Louise Dornan, the owner of S&TCS picked it up and answered the call. The talk on the other line lasted for several minutes until it ended and now he is back.

At the moment, he was languidly sitting on the swiveling chair while I was sitting straight on an ordinary steel chair. His desk is what between us. I am calm yet his sight is giving me slight intimidation.

“Can you introduce yourself, Amethyst?” he asked. And from thereon, I understand that I should give my very best in answering everything he would be asking. To think, this is the only establishment I could find seeking what I could do. I could not afford to lose this opportunity. Perhaps, I don’t know when I could get this same one again. I heaved a deep sigh and started giving him a short description of myself. He gave me a quick smile then pulled another question.

In the duration of the interview, Louise asked me more personal questions. Like why I am wanting this job. I genuinely answered him that right now I am the only member of a family that is very able to earn money. My mother had lupus, and my father is now forever blind. Regarding my two siblings, they were below legal age. So it is really up to me to do hardworking for our living.

Louise while listening to everything I am saying is always keeping a gentle smile on his face. Like he is really interested in what I am answering. I don’t know if it was just his personality to have a compassionate approach or I should already be hinted that he liked me. I don’t know, maybe I am just assuming things.

“So, I think you are very qualified for this job, Amy,” Louise said as he stood from where he was sitting. While presenting his hand for me to grab, he continued, “Congratulations, Amy, you are now part of Strong and Tasty Coffee Shop.”

Upon hearing it, gladness is what I quickly felt. With a teary eye, I reach for the hand of my new employer and shook it longer than the typical. I said, “Thank you so much, Sir Louise. I promise, you hiring me would not be your bad decision. I would work really really hard.”

Laughing, Louise replied, “I also think the same way, Amy. By the way, you will work together with Ana. Therefore, your duty is also six in the evening until six in the morning. I forgot to ask you this one, do you just accept night duty, right?”

I gave him a wide smile before replying, “Of course, Sir. That is not a problem for me.”

He once again laughed before replying, “You are really happy landing this job. Congrats again, you go rest now. Your duty will begin later tonight.”

I nodded to what I heard and once more thanked my new employer. I then told him that I will now leave which he quickly agreed. But what I thought that Ana had already left because it is now past six in the morning, to my surprise she is still inside the coffee shop. She’s still wearing her uniform and busy assisting a lady customer.

Seeing her in that sight, several questions quickly entered my mind: is she going to overtime? But she already had twelve hours of duty. Also, some employees of S&TCS who are new to me are also started working. They didn’t seem to be understaffed. But why she is still working?

“Oh hey, Amy!” Ana said upon she noticed me. She finished talking to the lady customer before she went to me. But just as I would tell her my good news, she gesture me to be silent. She then spoke, “You will not speak any word first. I will guess it. You got hired, right?”

I gave her a wide smile before nodding my head. I then said in a happy manner, “Yes, Ana, you guess it right. I got hired. And also, guess what? We will be working together!”

“Really? Yiee! Congrats, Amy!” responded by Ana. Her tone became loud that she caught the attention of almost all the people in the coffee shop. But she didn’t seem to care. And with that, I matched her happiness.

Later when things subsided, Ana told me that I can now leave. Confused with what I heard, I asked her why she was still working when in fact her duty had already ended. She gave me a quick smile before introducing the customer that she just assisted. She told me that the woman is Alena Delickr, one of the wealthiest customers that this coffee shop had. Every day she was having a coffee in the place and would always ask Ana to assist. She really loved it when Ana was the one that served her coffee.

Since I wanted to leave S&TCS together with Ana, I told Ana that I will stay. She asked me why and I told her my reason. We will go home together. I also told her that I will observe how they do things in the coffee shop. Ana smiled with what she heard and agreed to what I wanted. She let me seated in the vacant chair for she will now brew coffee. I roamed my eyesight around the place and got eye to eye contact with the woman whom Ana introduced as the wealthiest. Since I got intimidated, I was the first to channel my eyesight somewhere. I didn’t look at the same spot again not until Ana delivered the brewed coffee to the lady.

The two then made a short conversation which then the woman gave Ana a bottled perfume. On its label, it had a picture of a pink flower that looked similar to a pink rose.

Ana accepted it and thanked the woman.

“So, can we now go?” asked by Anastasia which I immediately nodded. Ana tried the perfume but immediately disliked it when the scent went straight to her nose. I on the other hand neither liked nor disliked the perfume. It just smelled similar to ordinary perfumes.

I doubt that there is something special to it.
