I'm asleep and it's around midnight when there is a knock on the door. I go to the door and open it very slowly then I throw it open seeing Luke. Tears flood my eyes as I wrap my arms around him. "Love, I want to tell you something," the man whispers and I look at him. "You believed in me and most importantly yourself. You have never given up on life even though you can't talk and that is why I love you, Love."
I stand there motionless and of course, speechless.
"I'm also blind in my left eye," Luke says softly as he smiles the same smile that I haven't seen for the past nine months. I move out of the way so that Luke can enter the house.
I help Luke upstairs to our bedroom and the first thing he did is collapse onto the bed. "You did a nice job taking care of the house," Luke says and I smile. I look into his eyes (one is white and the other one, brown) and begin to cry.
Luke wraps his strong and embracing arms around me then he whispers in my ear, "it's okay, Love, it's okay."
"Rose," I type on my phone. I close my eyes and fall asleep in my husband's arms.
The next morning, I woke up with a feeling that something is wrong or out of the ordinary. Luke is out of the bed, and I can hear Rose laughing. I guess I'm just being scared because I'm a mom with a half-blind husband. My throat feels as if it's closing up on me and for no reason what so ever. I text this to Luke: my throat is closing up on me.
Luke: Go to the hospital, Love. I'll take care of Rose.
Me: It's useless. The doctors already said I can't speak.
Luke: Please, you might figure out something that you didn't know before.
Me: Okay, I might get ice cream without you!
Luke: Please, Love... I'll be your best friend
Me: You are my husband, so you already are my best friend. I'm going to the hospital.
I put my phone in my purse and got into the car then begin driving to the hospital.
Me: Y'know, I don't have an appointment, Luke.
Luke: Ice cream?
Me: Of course, I was joking about not getting you any.
I drive to the ice cream shop and the cashiers all know that I'm mute.
As I walk into the restaurant, I look around and see that the walls are still white. I walk up to the cashier and upon seeing me, he says, "Hello! What would you like to have today?" He pushes me a menu so that I can circle what I want.
I circle one strawberry and one chocolate then give the cashier the menu back. I ask if I can have them both in a small tub. After a few minutes, I receive the ice cream and head home.
Me: I didn't get Rose any ice cream.
Luke: It's okay. She can share ours.
Luke: What flavors?
Me: and
Luke:
I arrive home and give Luke his ice cream them ate some of mine. After I'm done, I give some to Rose who seems to like mine best.
"I'll be at the kitchen table," I type to Luke who nods. I walk to the kitchen table and pull out my laptop.
I take a deep breath and open it then begin to type, "April 19, 2017, Amy and Dan Goldenheart" I pressed enter and a few pages pop up, so I click on the first page. Amy and Dan Goldenheart were killed in a car crash on April 19, 2017. The killers were William and Rebecca Ethan; Rebecca was Amy's younger sister and doing farther research, Rebecca killed her sister because she was jealous of Amy for being able to get the job that she (Rebecca) wanted and not Rebecca herself.
I sit there motionless after reading that.
