I have no idea want to do when my brain registers what Luke said. I nod and wrap my arms around Luke's neck.
Mom and Dad are quiet then Dad he whispers something to his wife. I stare at them, hoping they didn't think of saying no. "We can go get you two married," they say.
I look at Luke, 'isn't this strange because I call you "Mom and Dad" but you aren't my parents so I'm basically marrying my step-brother?' Luke read that for me and his parents look at each-other.
"You aren't adopted by us, and we could just say you are staying with your in-laws. Love, you can call us Mom and Dad because we are your mother and father-in-law."
I nod if that makes sense. Luke nods and say we're ready (he knows I am.) It has only been a few months since Aunt and Uncle are killed. I'm an orphan and a wife; I'm also mute but I don't feel it matters. I think my parents would be happy and feel bad saying this but, if they aren't died, then I wouldn't have met Luke. Good things can come from the bad.
Two years later
My daughter, Rose, cries from the next room over. I hope that Luke is taking care of her so that I won't have to confuse her because I can't talk. Someday I'll tell her what happened to me many years ago. Now, Luke and I are about to go to work and drop Rose off at her grandparents. I know somehow I would be over protective no matter how much I try not to be. I just want my daughter to be able to hear and see and be happy. I know it'll be hard to protect my little one from everything bad in the world.
"Are you ready, Love," Luke asks as he enters the bedroom, holding the toddler who reaches for me. Her black and red streaked hair is in braids and her blue eyes sparkled. I nod and pick up Rose, I nuzzle her making her giggle softly.
Tears suddenly stung into my eyes as Rose's hand gently patted my face, "Mama!" I look at my husband with a pained look in my eyes. Lucas whispers something that I can't hear then we all got into the car. We dropped Rose then went to work.
The days are basically the same as all of the others. We have our normal groups. I still love the job because everyone understands I can't speak. I cook while Lucas takes orders.
