At that, Val turned to her monitors. She was back to business. The boys headed towards the back of the house. Tyler admitted that he hadn't really been in this part of the house since before his incident. No one was concerned with flowers and cooking.
Stephen began to narrate again.
"Well, everyone. We have had our eyes opened wide by our new friend Tyler. Being the only survivor of sick, a terrible attack would weigh on anyone. He seems to have processed it enough to walk us through the house. We will check out the kitchen briefly and then on to the greenhouse. I'm curious if any plants could've survived such a long period of neglect. We've had no real signs of the paranormal. The book in the library was already explained. Ahh. Here we are in the kitchen. It's remarkably organized considering it hasn't been maintained. The drug runners must've avoided this room. Evan! Check out the cabinets! Tyler. Do you want to add anything to this room?"
"Honestly, we weren't in here much. We employed a cook who took care of most of our meals. We only spent time in the kitchen to bake with Aunt Charlotte. She'd give the cook some time off, and we'd surprise my dad with our baked goods. The cook would slip us treats as well. This room had a lot of positive memories attached to it."
Evan remarked that he didn't see anything out of the ordinary. They walked the entire room before deciding to move on to the greenhouse. Upon entering, Stephen started again.
"Well, we struck out again, but the night is still young! We are checking this out just to be thorough. I am curious about what we will find."
As they came out into the night, they made their way to the entrance of the greenhouse, Stephen stopped suddenly. The others caught up and shined their flashlights to see what had gotten his attention. Right inside the door was a dead raccoon. On it's corpse were two rats, their eyes glowing red reflected in the light. They were eating their fill and completely ignoring their uninvited guests.
Stephen handed the camera to Evan.
"Film this, Evan."He grabbed a stick he'd seen on the ground, "Well everyone, we have an obstacle. These two rats are eating in our way. I'm going to run them off so we can continue. We will also move the raccoon once the vermin is gone."
Stephen made towards the rats, and the larger one looked up at him. It just stared as if his it size meant nothing.
"I'm approaching the rats, and one of them is looking at me with an expression I can only describe as "Come at me, bro!". They aren't even worried about me at all. I guess they have grown fearless with any human activity in the area."
He moved in closer, and the second rat looked up. They just watched him, one of them still chewing. He reached striking distance, and they looked more like they'd attack than run. He drew back to swing, and they darted off into the darkness.
"That was the weirdest thing I think we've encountered so far, guys. Those rats just stood there as if daring me to hit them. I was a little spooked for a moment, but luckily, they've moved on."
The boys entered, and Stephen let Tyler narrate now.
My mom loved the greenhouse. She used to grow dahlias and poppies. They were her favorite. She let the cook have a section to grow herbs and things. It was amazing the flowers that would thrive in here. I'm a bit sad to see it so overrun with weeds. I'd say her flowers were more seasonal and couldn't survive without a controlled environment."
His theory seemed correct. There were no signs of anything more than some thistle, lavender, and rosemary. Maybe there were others in the back. As they moved deeper in, the darkness seemed to devour the lights they shined ahead. The windows were too dirty to let any light through.
