MARCUS
"Marcus, you can't ask her that and expect her to say yes. She's engaged to a man. A famous one at that. Just imagine you did go out and someone snapped a picture of you two. It could end in many ways and most likely the bad way. Love triangle. Scandalous affair. Friends and more." Jennifer explained.
I sighed because she was right. I tilt my head back in frustration. "I know. It's just frustrating, sis."
"I know. Just give her time." She sighed, taking a seat next to me on the sofa. "I just don't trust that Noah." She voiced.
I gazed her way with a raised, curious brow. "Why?"
"He's rushing her for a wedding. Yeah, they knew each other for a good amount of time but, I know if something is not right with my best friend."
I stayed silent. It must not be a happy home after all. The question is, should I try to follow through with my plan and find out if there was something special between us or should I let all of this go and leave Em to live her life the way she plans to and I leave and go back to Canada.
With everything, my option might be the second.
No.
Despite my surroundings, I have to know if Emily truly moved on and the sparks were no longer there.
I have too. It's the only way my mind can be at peace instead of physically doing something stupid.
Like grabbing her and kissing her soft lips.
She'll slap me for sure. Or will she?
I exhaled a long breath of frustration. I couldn't get her out my mind and here I am plotting to prove a point.
Am I wrong?
"Anyway," Jennifer's voice grabbed from deep thought. "Just think carefully and be careful of what you do."
I nod and she embraces me into a hug for a long moment. I wrapped my arms around her and we pulled apart.
"So, that's out the way. What should we have for dinner? Diego is picking up the kids as we speak."
"Whatever you want, sis. I'm your guest."
She chuckles and turns, making her way to the kitchen. I looked towards the open window that showed off the many lights of the other homes around here. I tried to look further out to find her home but of course that's impossible.
How do I know where she lives? She's friends with my sister and Em lives far away.
"Come on, Marcus!"
I sighed and walked in the direction of the kitchen. And clearing Emily from my mind.
For now.
EMILY
It was the next morning.
"I'm coming!" I called out to whoever was knocking on my door.
I placed down the spatula and turned down the stove that was cooking my pancakes on a very low and hurried to the door.
I looked through the peephole and there stood my mother with a wide grin holding up folders. I sighed and unlocked and opened the door. She didn't hesitate to burst inside.
"Good morning, Emily." She says, walking straight to my living room and sitting on the couch. "I have photos of the dresses that I think you'll look stunning in." She waved the folders in the air with a grin.
I closed the door and locked it back. "Mom, I have to go to work and I'm rushing to make my breakfast." I semi lied. I honestly was in no mood to talk to my mother about the wedding dresses that she chose.
Don't get me wrong, I love my mother but she loves to take over things to make it her fantasy.
"Oh, it will be quick." She waves me off, standing to her feet and follows me into the kitchen.
I cut the stove completely off and placed the finished pancake on the stack of the first one that also had bacon and scrambled eggs.
"Emily, what have I told you about eating healthy before your wedding?"
I sighed. "Mom, I'll be okay if I gain a few pounds." My voice tiring and she shakes her head.
"Anyway," she opens the folder and shows me multiple white dresses and the one thing they had in common was the mermaid dress, all flowery ends. "What do you think? They all come with a vail but I think you should wear just the flower crown."
I nod. "Flower crown sounds perfect but I think I should have an A-Line. It's simple and—"
"Absolutely not, Emily." She cuts me off with a sharp tone and a disgusted face.
I sighed. "Mom, it's my wedding." I reminded her, with a pinned look.
She was about to say something when I spoke up quickly. "I have to go to work. We can continue talking about the wedding later." I said, placing Saran Wrap over my plate and sticking it in the fridge.
"Fine, but we have to move fast if we're wanting this wedding to be perfect." She says, giving me a look as she closed the folder. "I'll leave these here in case you change your mind."
I nod. She smiles and walks to me, cupping my face. "I'm so proud of you. You will have a happy marriage." She pulls me into an embrace then pulls away. "I'll leave you to get ready. Goodbye."
And then she was gone.
I closed my eyes and shook my head before heading upstairs and getting ready for work.
—
"She's just trying to help you, baby." Noah said on the other side of my phone.
I exhaled a breath and leaned back in my office chair, looking out the window. Of course he was taking her side. It was no surprise given my mother has found a special place in his heart.
"More like harassing me until I cave into what she wants me to wear at my wedding. It's just a lot."
He chuckled and I couldn't hold back the urge to roll my eyes. "It will be okay."
I sighed and rubbed my temples. "I hope. So, what are you doing now."
"Getting ready to meet my manager for the upcoming movie deals."
Chloe, his manager. Young pretty thing she was but always did her job. I've met the woman on a few occasions. Tall blonde with blue eyes and light freckles that touched her nose. Oh and always a bit touchy with Noah.
I've asked him if he would get another manager because I simply did not trust her to just be all business but he uses the same turing excuse and that's how he had her for three years and hasn't once done a job poorly.
I couldn't say anything after that because he was right but he was paying no mind to her wandering hands and irritated me.
"Okay well, I have to go." I told him. "A friend of mine is coming to see me and he will be here any minute. I don't want to keep you. I'll call you—" I lied.
It may have been wrong but I was testing him.
"He?" He questioned.
"Yeah. I've known him before you and it's been a while since I've seen him." I said with a smirk.
He hums for a moment. "I would like to meet this friend."
I swallowed hard, not expecting him to say that. Great job, Em. On stupidity!
"Oh, he will only be in town for a few days and—"
"I can make a few changes to my schedule. Besides, I know you want me to come earlier than before."
Damn it.
"I'll see if you can. He'll be super busy with his family and..." I trailed off.
"I'll see you soon, love."
I sighed. "Okay." And I ended the call.
Good job, Em. Good job for making a big mistake.
