Chapter 1: Foreshadow
One winter day, there were dark and gray clouds.
“There’s a blizzard coming,” Jacob said.
“We should stay close enough where we can see and smell each other, so we don’t go astray,” said Raya.
“I agree, we cannot get lost, not now,” said Chase.
Jacob, Raya, Chase and I were running on all paws in a winter storm. Looking for food is near impossible. Animals long for the warmth of their homes. Only coming out to look for food.
*Sniff-sniff*
“I smell something,” said Raya.
Of course, she can smell anything since she seems to come from a generation of hunter wolves.
“Selene!” said Raya “Can you smell that?”
“Yes, stay close by” I responded.
I, on the other hand, don’t come from hunter wolves. I come from a special bloodline, and with that comes heightened senses, but my pack doesn’t know about this. Yes, they know I’m an Alpha by blood, but they don’t know that I’m actually one of the purest blood of wolves. My family is to be considered royalty if you will, since our family has only been mated with other pure blood. Let’s just say that we are one of the first of our species, a lot of werewolves are mixed with other mystical creatures. Also, humans, because most of our species look for their true mates, the one the moon goddess pairs us with. But my family has their true mate, who they mated too, but I wasn’t mated to any of the pure blood that my family knew, but they still wanted me to mate with one of the pure bloods, but I ran away to find my true mate. So, here I am, with my true mate running away from our home. We have been living in the wilderness for about two months now because our town found out we were different, so they chased us out of the town, and now we are looking for a new home and safe place for us to start over.
“Get out of your thoughts, Selene! – we want to eat today, so focus on the prey” grumbled Jacob.
I snarled at him, Jacob snarled back, Jacob he’s my mate, my true mate. I met him 5 years ago when I was wandering into town.
*FLASHBACK*
I was browsing for a CD since I was going to be on the road again soon. As I was searching for a specific CD, I noticed a young man staring at me, he was stacking up records, when I sniffed the air and there was this intoxicating smell of mint and chocolate. He scented, the scent of a werewolf. I just then realized I had found him, my mate, my true mate. I tend to hide my scent from other werewolves. That way I don’t get recognized what I am, I prefer to avoid getting that annoying attention, but at this moment I didn’t mind his attention. I also didn’t want him to know that I am a werewolf, just yet. Jacob used to work at a music store. After a little while, he approached me with his crooked smile and asked what I was looking for.
“Um a Green Day album I travel so I was picking out rock music for my trip.” I answered.
“I love Green Day. Where have you traveled? Where do you come from?” he asked.
“I’m from New York, but I’ve been visiting every state.”
I knew he was lying about loving Green Day, but I knew he was trying to impress me.
“How long have you lived here?” I asked.
“My whole life. How- how long are you staying for?” He asked
“Depends” I said. I tried to plant an idea in his head- weird I couldn’t.
“On what?” he asked.
“If you are taking me out to dinner tonight?” he looked surprised, mainly shocked.
“Yes, I will- I mean- would you like to have dinner with me tonight?” he asked.
“Yes.” I responded with a chuckle.
*Later that day*
I got ready as usual, hiding my sent, but all a sudden I heard a knock on my motel room. It couldn’t be him, it’s too early, and I looked through the peephole. It was someone I didn’t know, but I could smell the werewolf on her. I opened the door slowly, so she wouldn’t barge in.
“Yes, who are you? What do you need? I said in a soft dominant voice.
“I’m here to warn you not to mess around here. This is my territory.” Said the stranger.
“Excuse me? Your territory? Is this how the town treats its guests?” I stiffened my voice, I can sense herself preparing for a fight.
“Yes, when it’s a werewolf.” She said bluntly. “Don’t look so surprised, you thought you can fool someone by covering your sent?” she said
“I’m not trying to fool anyone just don’t like unnecessary attention like this instant for example, I came here to travel pass by, not to stay.” I said in a stern voice.
I sensed her emotion change from fighting to lenient. At that moment she knew I am an Alpha. She backed away slowly murmured something.
“Speak up” I demanded.
“Does Jacob know?” she asked.
“Who is this Jacob you speak of” I asked.
“You will be going on a date with him tonight.” She responded.
“No, he doesn’t, but it is my business whether I tell him or not.” I answered.
“Yes, but also he is my friend, and I don’t want him to get hurt.” She said as she was walking away.
I had to calm down, I paced in my motel room I thought of how this can create a problem, but I have already felt drawn to Jacob. I decided to let Jacob decide. Not so long after I could smell Jacob’s scent, he was nervous, and he was struggling to knock on the door, but after a minute of breathing in and out so loudly he got the courage to knock, when I opened the door the smell of cologne and his scent got stronger, but I guess he still doesn’t realize what I am. We walked to his car and drove off to a nice restaurant, considering this is a small town.
“I’ve been thinking about having dessert afterward, but not here. Is that okay?” I asked.
“Yes, of course.” He spoke.
“You can also show me your town.” I spoke.
“I would be honored.” He spoke.
We were taking a stroll in the park eating ice cream that we didn’t notice it was a full moon. I wasn’t too worried Alpha’s don’t really phase unless we allow it, but lower ranking wolves find it harder for them to control it. As the night passed by and it was getting closer to that time Jacob seemed to be very calm, his thoughts entirely on me. Maybe that’s a good thing, then something odd happened. He started to phase but he didn’t notice himself phasing. He only noticed when I was standing taller than him, then his thoughts were all over the place.
“Calm down, breathe. I’m not afraid.” I told him trying to get him relax.
“How can you say-she can’t understand me, run.” He tried to warn me.
“Actually, I can- I’m also a werewolf.” I said scared of his reaction.
“How? Why couldn’t I smell you?” he asked with tension in his voice.
“I hid my scent. I don’t like creating problems with other packs, but I guess the other werewolf can still smell my scent.” I explained, a little annoyed by the sense of the other wolf from earlier following us.
“What other werewolf?” he asked, confused.
“I never caught her name, but she has been following us the whole time.” I said, I knew she was surprised. “Show yourself”. I used my Alpha voice for her to come out.
“Yes ma’am” Raya said, as she bowed down.
“She wanted to protect you; I can understand why.” I said.
“I’ll let you both talk.” As I walked away, I could hear their conversation as well as sense their emotions.
