Chapter 5

Since it was raining we couldn't pick cotton today because Massa says it was no use.

"You hungry". Jimmy said walking into my room with a plate.

"Yeah". I said nodding sitting up.

Walking over he takes a seat at the end of the bed handing me the plate and I started eating in silence.

"You know you gone get in big trouble sneaking off with massa's son". He said looking over at me as I slowly chewed the food.

"He comes hea at night". I said and he shook his head.

"Massa won't see it that way". He said staring at me.

"He's nice and he's my friend". I said sitting the plate down on the bed beside me.

"Just be careful okay and don't get caught". He said standing up.

"Thank you". I said before he walked out of the room and he turned around.

"Fa what I ain't did nothing". He said with a confused look.

"Fa watching out for me". I said and he started smiling.

"Ya growing on me ya hea I ain't never had a little sista before". He said causing me to smile.

"Gone finish up". He said walking out and closing the door behind him.

Eating the rest of my food I take the plate to the kitchen and sit it in the sink before walking back to my room.

Closing the door I go to sit down when I see Karsyn standing outside my window.

"Why ya outside in the rain". I ask as I opened the window.

"Come to the barn with me". He said and I looked back at the door before looking at him.

"Okay". I said climbing out of the window with his help.

Running to the barn we go inside and it was lit up.

Grabbing my hand he takes me to a spot that has blankets and books. Taking a seat he grabs one patting the spot next to him.

Taking a seat beside him he opens the book.

"Do you know how to read". He asked and I shook my head no.

"I wasn't never allowed to go to school". I said looking over at him.

"Do you want to learn". He asked looking back at me and I nodded.

"Okay". He said before he started getting me to sound out the words.

"E-ex-expectation". I said and he looked over at me smiling.

"That's great". He said before he continued pointing at words and helping me sound them out.

|NEXT MORNING|

Waking up I look beside me and see Karsyn was still sleeping. Looking out I see that it was still early just by the sky being dark.

Shaking him he moves around before looking at me.

"What happened". He asked sitting up rubbing his eyes.

"We got ta go before we get in trouble". I said standing up as he did the same.

Walking towards the entrance of the barn he stops me. Wrapping his arms around me I stand there for a second doing the same.

"You get home safe now". I said and he looked at me strangely.

"I'm taking you back let's go". He said grabbing my hand and we ran off through the field.

Finally making it to my house he helps me in before giving me a hug again.

"I had fun". He said smiling up at me as he hung onto the window.

"I did to now gone". I said with a small laugh shooing him off and he ran off.

Closing the window I slip off my shoes and pull the covers back getting in bed.

Laying down I close my eyes.
