Chapter 6

Wiping the sweat off of my forehead I look around before taking a seat.

Laying down I hear movement causing me to look over.

"Ensley". I heard someone say as I looked around.

"Over here". The voice said as I looked to my left and I see Karsyn waving his hand smiling at me.

"Come on". He said and I crawled over towards him grabbing his hand.

Once they connected we started running towards the lake. Once we get there we drop each others hand breathing heavily.

"I got you something". He said with a smile walking over to the log as I followed behind him.

Lifting something covered with a huge leaf he takes the leaf off and it's some kind of meat.

"What is it". I ask looking up at him.

"It's a steak I thought maybe you would like to try it". He said looking back at me and I nodded.

He ripped a piece off handing it to me. He watches me take a bite.

"Well".He asked with a smile.

"It's very good thank you". I said covering my mouth as I smiled.

"I actually cooked this for you this time when ma would cook I would stay in the kitchen and help just so I could make something for you". He said causing me to smile.

"I sure do thank ya for this". I said taking another piece from him.

"What did you do for your birthday the other day". He asked bringing my feet to his lap and started rubbing them and it actually felt good.

"Granny and Jimmy baked me this real nice cake and that's pretty much it". I said with a shrug.

"You know I'm real sorry for missing it but pa drug me into town all day". He said giving me a sad look.

"It's fine really you stopped by and gave me a gift". I said grabbing his hand.

"Yeah but I wanted to spend the day with you to celebrate". He said and I shook my head.

"It's okay really". I said bringing him into a hug.

As we pulled back we looked into each others eyes before leaning in and kissing.

"So this is where you run off to". I heard causing us to quickly move away from each other.

Looking over I see that it was Massa Jackson.

"I want to see why you like this n****r so much". He said walking over and snatching me up.

"Put her down pa". I heard Karsyn say as Massa Jackson walked away from him.

Walking back through the field I look over and see everybody stopped working and was now standing around watching.

"PUT HER DOWN". Karsyn yelled beating Massa's back.

"Now what ever she done did I'll take the punishment". Jimmy said running over standing in front of Massa Jackson.

"This ain't got nothing to do with you boy now go on". He said pushing Jimmy out of the way.

Walking up the steps and into the house I continue to move around fighting.

"MA". Karsyn yelled running in the house.

"What's all the fuss". Some lady said running out wiping her hands.

"What are you doing". She asked as he continued to walk.

"Stay down here". He said before walking upstairs and into a room.

Slamming the door he locks it and I can hear beating on the other side.

"Let's see why has my son so in love". He said walking over to me unbuckling his belt.

"KARSYN". I scream and he covered my mouth.

"Shut up". He said sternly.
