Chapter 4

Laying back on the bed I read a book my mother got for me when I heard screaming coming from outside.

Quickly putting the book down I rush down the stairs and out the front door.

Looking both ways I see people standing around the shed where the cotton is collected.

"This is your second time not bringing in enough". I heard my fathers voice say before the sound of the whip and screaming.

Pushing through people I see Ensley tied to the post with her shirt ripped open in the back.

Blood dropped down her back as she cried. Once I saw him lift his hand to hit her again I run and stand in front of her.

"She had enough pa". I said looking up at him.

Grabbing me by my shirt he yanks me towards him. Grabbing my hand he pushes the whip into it.

"Whip her". He said and I shook my head no trying to fight him.

"I SAID WHIP THAT n****r b***h". He yelled shaking me.

"I SAID NO". I yelled and he slapped me.

"JACKSON". I heard my mom yell as I was on the ground holding my face.

"Since he loves n*****s so much he wouldn't mind taking her last three strikes". He said picking me up and dragging me towards the post.

Untying her she falls to the ground and he ties me up ripping my shirt.

"Jackson no". My mother said running over but he pushed her back.

Drawing his hand back I felt a stinging sensation on my back.

"This outa teach you to stop defending these n*****s". He said before hitting me again and I cried out in pain.

Feeling the last hit I thought I was going to be untied.

"Now you're going to stay up there until I feel like cutting you down". He said backing away breathing heavily.

"Get back to work". He said before walking away.

Everybody quickly started to walk away.

Looking over I see Ensley crawling towards me. Sitting up she grabs my hand.

"I surely do thank you". She said before Jimmy came and picked her up.

Then I was alone.

|4 hours later|

The sun was blazing and I was very thirsty.

"Hea drink some water Massa Karsyn". Ruth an older lady said holding the cup up to my mouth.

"It's just Karsyn". I said with a smile.

Before I could even take a sip the cup was knocked out of her hand.

"Go on now". My father said looking down at us.

She left as quickly as she could.

Staring down at me he shakes his head and walks away.

Closing my eyes I let out a sigh laying my head against the post.

"Hea hurry up and drink before massa comes back". I heard Ensley say.

"Don't call him that". I said looking up at her as she placed the cup to my lips and I drank.

"Thank you". She said giving me a small smile.

"It's nothing I would do it again for every single one of y'all". I said giving her a small smile back.

"Hea it's hot out". She said fanning me with a hand made fan.

"I sure do thank you but you need to go home". I said and she gave me a confused look.

"Why no ones out". She said staring at me.

"You never know when my fathers watching so go ahead and go please". I said and she stopped fanning me.

"Okay". She said before standing up and walking away.

|2 hours later|

It was coming on night fall and I was still outside.

Hearing footsteps I look out to see if I could see anybody. Feeling the ropes being cut my arms drop down to my sides.

"Get on in the house". He said before walking away.

Using the post I stand up and make my way towards the house. Walking inside I go to my room and into the bathroom running some water.

Once it was almost to the top I stopped the water and removed my clothes. Stepping inside I sit down and clench my fist breathing heavily from the stinging sensation on my back.

Hearing a knock on the door my mother steps in taking a seat on the toilet top.

"I know you want to help them but how much can you take Karsyn". She said looking down at the floor.

"As much as I can mama". I said looking up at the ceiling.

"I just don't want you to get hurt anymore than you already have you know your father has a temper on him". She said and I nod watching the water drip out of the faucet.

"I know mama but you taught me that I need to fight for what's right and that's what I'm doing". I said looking over at her.

"Just be careful okay". She said standing up.

"I will". I said and she nodded before walking out.

I'll continue to fight until he sees what I see...
