"You don't have to go Ensley I'll do your work for you". Jimmy said as I put on my shoes. "No it's okay you wouldn't be able to do my share in the amount of time we have". I said standing up slowly. "You sure you fine". He asked handing me my bag. "Yes I'm fine thank you". I said following him out of the room. "How you feeling child". Granny said as we walked into the kitchen. "I'm doing alright". I said giving her a small smile as I sat down at the table. "Massa didn't give us much to eat this week so I only have a few eggs and some bread". She said putting the plate down in front of me. "It looks good". I said as I started eating. After we were done we walked out to the field and joined the others that were already working. |5 hours later| It was so hot today and I feel like if I don't take a break I'm going to pass out. "You okay Ensley".Jimmy asked looking over at me. "It's really hot out hea". I said fanning myself. "Go ahead and take a break I'll start filling yours". He said taking my bag as I sat down. "Get up n****r". I heard someone say causing me to look over. "Yes sir". I said standing up. "She needs to rest a minute". Jimmy said causing us both to look at him. "It's fine Jimmy ". I said taking my bag from him. "Don't speak outta line boy ya hear me". He said sternly pointing at Jimmy with a gun. "She needs a break do you hea me". Jimmy said and the man laughed before shooting him. I stood there in shock as Jimmy fell to the ground. By now everybody stopped working and was looking our way. "WHAT DID YOU DO?". I yelled falling down to my knees crawling towards Jimmy. "What's going on here". I heard somebody say but I was to focused on Jimmy. "This here n****r boy was talking back". He said as I rubbed Jimmy's face. "I need all my workers so get him up and take him to the doctor to get stitched up". I heard Massa say before a hand touched my shoulder. "You look real good". He said rubbing my shoulder. "Don't touch me ya hea". I said snatching away from him and watched as they took Jimmy away. "Get back to work". He said before walking off. Picking up the bag I begin to work but It felt weird without Jimmy cracking jokes. |Later that night| Everybody sat out around the fire playing music, dancing, and cooking. "We walked in darkness now seeing great light Out of the shadows into your sunshine". Someone started singing causing everything to go quiet. "Joy has began great celebrations Joining one-voice worshiping nation".Granny Mildred started singing taking a seat beside me. "Chains I was bound now have been broken Doors that were shut have been flung wide open Joy has began great celebration Joining one-voice worshiping nation This is a song a song of free". I sing along as she wraps her arm around me. "We sing hosanna We've been redeemed cause our humble king... has shown us compassion Chains I was bound now have been broken Doors that were shut have been flung wide open Joy has began great celebration Joining one-voice worshiping nation This is a song a song of free". By this time there were people crying and speaking in tongue. "Why did we have to be born like this I thought god loved his children". I said as my eyes started to water. "Don't ever question the lord he doesn't give you more than you can handle and you know why he set this obstacle in front of us". She asked looking down at me as I shook my head. "He knew we were the ones strong enough to handle it and over come it".She said rubbing my back. "And don't think for a second we're the only ones like this they got the Mexican slaves too". She said and I gave her a confused look. "Why I ain't never hea of them". I ask looking up at her. "Just cause they aren't treated as bad as us don't mean it ain't happening to them". She said looking out at the people dancing. "We should all come together and take the white man out". I said and she quickly looked over at me. "Now you hush your mouth now ya hea me". She said sternly and I quickly nod. "Let me tell you something baby racism isn't something that is born it's something that is taught". She said and I gave her a confused look. "You still young but you'll understand as you get older but gone head and have a little fun before it's time to go in". She said tapping my butt. Standing up I walk off to the back where no one could see me and I looked out at everybody who was having a good time when my mind went off to Jimmy.
