Chapter 18

Fall leaves fell from the trees that surrounded our pack's land. I couldn't believe everything that had transpired over the summer, and now it was fall. Had I not decided to stay with my family and mate, I would be starting a new semester in college on the other side of the country. Funny how things change so quickly.  I stood on the porch of the Alpha's residence with a warm cup of tea in my hands. It was early in the morning as I watched a few Wolves moving furniture into our new home.  It was my request a few months ago. As much as I loved the Alpha residence, I still wanted a place where Narien and I could live together, alone. Just the two of us. He agreed quickly and arranged for a small little cottage to be built on some of the unused land nearby.  I took a sip of my tea when I heard the door open and close behind me. Moments later, a pair of hand snaked around my waist and I smiled.  "I'm taking your brothers out for a recon mission today," Narien's voice rang out from beside me.  I raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Why Katson and Torka?"  "Well they are great fighters," Narien admitted with a nod. "But in reality I wanted to ask them if I can marry you."  I smiled. "You're getting permission from my brothers?" "Well, it was more your dad's idea," Narien mused. "My father asked you to ask them for permission?" I questioned, turning around to face Narien now, the only thing between us being my cup of tea.  He shrugged his shoulders and scratched his head. "Well, I already sort of got your father's permission..." He trailed off. "Kind of late, I guess, but he was never against us being together." I raised my left hand to caress his face. "We're already married in our own way, Narien. My brothers won't say no and if they did, well, they would be getting a swift smack on their snouts." Narien laughed at my words. "You are so good at keeping me in check," he plants a small kiss to my forehead before turning to look at the cottage that was being built. I followed his lead and also spun back around to examine the Wolves.  "I can't wait," I said softly, leaning my head on his shoulder. "It's going to be the perfect place for us."  Narien hummed happily. "I know, it's going to be the best." He then leaned over and whispered into my ear. "Especially the part when we get to christen it."  I felt my face flush deep red with his words, and gave him a small jab in the side. Narien laughed, planting yet another small kiss on top of my head this time before heading towards the cottage to see how everyone was doing.  I watched as he walked over, and when I saw the other Wolves greeting their Alpha I sighed contently. I then walked back inside as I was starting to get cold.  I was preparing breakfast when I heard a knock at the door and I moved to answer it. Both Katson and Torka both stood before me, smiling giant smiles, before coming in.  "Have you two eaten yet?" I asked, walking back to the kitchen.  "Yep!" Torka said happily.  Katson smacked him upside the head. "We can always eat more, you know that Ame."  I smiled. "Okay then come grab a seat because I'm cooking up a hashbrown skillet and I know you won't want to miss out on that!"  They both nodded excitedly before sitting at the barstools that faced the island of the kitchen. I cooked and had a lovely conversation with my brothers while doing so. It wasn't much longer until our father appeared from his room and smiled.  "Boys, this is a surprise, what are you doing here?" He asked happily surprised.  "Oh! We're going out with Alpha Narien today!" Torka replied happily. It was like he had a tail and it was wagging currently.  Katson nodded. "Yep. He asked us to do recon with him and Marsen this morning."  "So you figured you'd bother your sister the Luna before going out?" My father asked inquisitively and I giggled at his words.  "Hey! Ame's cooking is the best! It's not fair that you get to have it all the time and we don't." Torka replied playfully.  My father shook his head. "Alpha Erandius literally offered to let you both stay in this house."  Katson and Torka shook their heads together. "No can do, pops." Torka said quickly.  "You have to be super important to live here," Katson added softly.  "Yep!" Torka agreed cheerily. "We're not super important like Ame is." I turned to face the three of them. "Well don't you two worry because Narien and I will be moving out soon and then the only person who's going to get a taste of my cooking is him." I stated very matter-of-factly before serving them each a dish of my breakfast. "Please eat up you two."  Katson and Torka nodded with sharp determination in their eyes before digging into their food. I quickly served up a plate for my father, handing it to him happily. "This was your idea," I said quietly. "Narien told you?" My father asked quietly back, taking the dish of food from my hands.  I nodded my head but didn't say anything as I took a small nibble of hashbrown from the skillet in front of me. My father simply sighed before moving around me and heading towards the dining table.  Before I knew it, Narien and Marsen had both arrived and decided to eat. When Kaeala and Erandius awoke, they were both pleasantly surprised to see the Alpha's residence so full of life. I was cleaning happily with Kaeala when she spoke.  "We're going to miss having you and Narien around," she said with a smile on her face but eyes full of sadness.  "We're going to miss being here!" I said, hugging her quickly with my wet hands.  We went back to washing the dishes as Narien and the others quickly took off along with my father taking Erandius somewhere else. Kaeala and I always joked about how they were secretly boyfriends. They always enjoyed each others company. I guess that's what happens when you're friends since birth practically.  I had spent the afternoon helping the Wolves with the house since at this point, all that had to be done was furnishings and decoration. By late afternoon it finally felt finished and I got a bottle of champagne to toast the Wolves who'd been working day and night on our own little cottage.  "Thank you all again," I said with my glass in the air. "Anything for our beautiful Luna!" Kyle, Laila's mate, replied happily. We then shouted cheers and drank our drinks.  I was waiting in the little cottage alone now, looking around for something to occupy my mind with while I waited for Narien and Marsen to return with my brothers. I hated not being able to listen in on the mind-link. It was awful.  However, I did have a small anchor to Narien and that was his feelings. And since I could feel him being happy I knew that everything was okay. Knowing that he was happy was enough for me to know that he was safe.  Narien came directly home to our new house when they returned. He caught me off-guard while I was fixing a light fixture and lifted me off the ground in a spin.  "I'm home!" He said happily, turning me to face him.  I smiled. "Hello, and welcome home." Narien bounced up and down. "Do it, do it," he pleaded. "Please do the thing!" I smiled at his glee. "Welcome home husband," I said with a smile plastered on my face.  "Ahh," He said happily, burying his face in my shoulder. "Nothing beats coming home to my beautiful wife in our beautiful new home."  I kissed him happily, smushing his cheeks in my hands. "Wasn't there some kind of talk of christening the place when you got home?" I asked cheekily.  Narien's eyes widened as he picked me back up from the ground. We both laughed as he carried me to our new bedroom and threw me onto the bed. This room was much smaller than our room in the Alpha's residence, but it was warm and cozy and exactly what I wanted.  We spent the night making love to one another, taking breaks for snacks or even once to watch a movie. We were so happy. I felt so happy.  Narien had already fallen asleep in bed when I joined him. Quickly he grabbed hold of me and pulled me close to him. I was over-the-moon happy while we laid together like this in our new home. "I love you," I whispered to him quietly, thinking he was asleep.  "I love you too," He replied softly with a sleepy yawn.  The next morning Narien was awake first and made me breakfast. I was touched by his gesture and planted multiple kisses on his cheek as gesture to try and show my thanks.  We ate together at our small dining room table.  "So, how did it go yesterday with Katson and Torka?" I asked happily. "Okay, so, don't get mad at me-" Narien began.  "Oh no," was all I could get in.  "But I didn't ask them..." He finally finished his thought.  "What!" I shouted with a laugh.  Narien laughed in response, looking down and away from me. "Marsen didn't... really get the memo so he sent them off together while he and I did other... stuff." "You and Marsen are starting to sound an awful lot like our fathers," I joked, taking a bite out of my food. "So are you going to try again?" "Yeah I gave Marsen an earful about it yesterday but I just couldn't wait to get home to you. As soon as I heard through the pack's mind-link that the house was finished I raced home."  I smiled. "You're so funny," I said with a laugh.  "Anyways, I'm taking your brothers out again with Marsen this afternoon. Marsen's in now too so he won't just... send them away like he did yesterday." Narien explained to me.  "I see," I nodded thoughtfully, sipping at a glass of water. "Then I wish you luck for today, dearest husband." I said as he cleared our plates from the table.  "Ooh," he shook his body. "Say it again, say it again!"  "Good luck Narien," I said teasingly, heading towards our bedroom.  "No!" He shouted after me jokingly. "No! No! The other thing! Amethia!"  It wasn't long before the afternoon rolled around. Narien and Marsen had taken off with my brothers once again and I focused in on our connection through the mate bond.  At first he was calm, but then he became nervous, when finally he was happy. It felt like he'd probably asked them by now for their blessing. I felt happy in response, when afterwards I could feel his love through our mate bond once more.  I was focused in on that feeling when all of a sudden it went dark. I froze, trying to feel for Narien when my head exploded with pain. I screamed, hoping someone nearby would hear me. The pain was too intense, I had no idea what was going on. My head felt empty but I could tell I was still screaming for dear life.  I crashed to the ground, gasping for air and clutching my head. I heard the door swing open and heard voices calling out to me. Arms wrapped around me and I was lifted up bridal style. When the pain subsided for a moment I realized that it was my father who had me in his arms and was carrying me away from the cottage.  Tears flooded my vision as I struggled to understand what was going on and why I was in so much pain. My father consoled me as best as he could once we had returned to the Alpha's residence but I could barely hear him as is. Kaeala seemed to be distraught and Erandius was doing his best to calm her down.  I only understood once I saw the front door burst open. Katson held Narien in his arms while Marsen and Torka struggled to hold each other up.  I screamed. At least I think I screamed. It was so hard for me to tell anything that was going on at this point. I was so scared.  "We were ambushed," Katson said to my father as he took Narien from Katson's arms.  "Go to your sister, now." I heard my father command and Katson rushed to where I sat on the couch.  My eyes were still puffy and my vision was blurred but I could tell Katson was covered in blood. He smiled at me though and suddenly I felt a rush of relief to see that my brother was okay and he was happy.  "Listen, Ame, he's okay, I promise." He said slowly. "Narien he... He jumped in front of Torka to save him. Your mate saved your brother's life, okay?"  "Katson..." I asked through tears. "Why does it all hurt so much?"  Katson tried to clear my face of tears and hair. "He is your mate. You feel everything he feels. So don't worry, because this pain is going to go away, I promise."  I nodded, hugging my brother tightly. Narien was going to be okay. He had to be okay.
