Chapter One
The Rejection
I had always known the night would come when my life would change. But I never imagined it would feel like this.
The moon hung high in the night sky, casting its silver light over the clearing where the Blackthorn Pack had gathered for the most sacred of ceremonies. The air was thick with anticipation, the earth beneath my feet alive with the pulse of countless hearts beating in unison. This was my moment, the culmination of years of training, of preparation to become Luna, the chosen mate of Alpha Kade Ashford.
Kade stood before me, his golden hair gleaming in the moonlight, his green eyes fixed on mine with that familiar intensity. I could feel the connection between us, the bond that had been building since childhood, stretching like an invisible thread, a promise of something unbreakable.
The pack’s elders murmured quietly around them, the ritual beginning. My heart raced as Kade stepped forward, the weight of his gaze pulling me deeper into the moment. I had dreamed of this for as long as i could remember. I had been his, and he had been mine. We were fated. There was no other way.
The marking ceremony would unite our souls, our wolves. Our pack would be strengthened by the bond, and all would be well in the world of Blackthorn.
Except, something felt wrong.
Kade’s steps faltered as he reached me, and for the briefest of moments, the familiar warmth in his eyes shifted to something colder, something distant. My stomach clenched, but i didn’t have time to dwell on the feeling before Kade spoke, his voice echoing in the clearing.
“Lena Aldric,” he said, his words deliberate, measured. “I reject you as my mate.”
The world seemed to freeze.
My breath caught in my throat, my heart crashing in my chest. I opened my mouth, but no sound came out. He wolf howled in agony, as though it too couldn’t comprehend what had just been said. The earth beneath me feet seemed to shift, my body unsteady as if the very ground had betrayed me.
Around me, there was silence, stunned disbelief.
Kade’s gaze never left mine as he continued, the words like knives cutting through my soul. “I reject you as my mate and as my future Luna. I have chosen another.”
My world unraveled in a single breath.
The next few seconds stretched into eternity as Kade turned, his hand already reaching for Evelyn Monroe, the daughter of a powerful Alpha from a neighboring pack. She was beautiful—blonde hair like spun gold, skin flawless and pale as porcelain. The two of them were already bound by political alliances, but i never imagined it would come to this.
Kade cupped Evelyn’s face, turning her toward him, and in a gesture that felt like it had been planned for years, he claimed her in front of the entire pack. He kissed her, sealing their bond with a tenderness that made me want to scream.
My heart shattered.
I staggered back, the weight of rejection crashing into my chest like a wave. I barely heard the whispers of the pack, the murmurs of pity, of shock, of judgment. I could feel my wolf clawing at the edges of my consciousness, wanting to rip free, to tear everything apart. But I could do nothing. I was frozen.
“Why, Kade?” I finally managed to whisper, my voice hoarse, broken.
He didn’t meet my gaze. “You were never strong enough to be my Luna. I need a queen, Lena. Someone who can stand by my side without making me weak.”
My world tilted. My knees gave out, and i crumpled to the ground, the cold earth pressing into my palms as if it might somehow anchor me to reality. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. The words spun in my mind over and over, each repetition a cruel reminder of how small and insignificant I had become in his eyes.
My wolf howled in pain. My chest constricted, my breath shallow as i fought to regain control, to hold myself together. But nothing made sense. How could he do this? How could he reject me?
I pushed myself to my feet, eyes burning with rage and betrayal. My pack, the very people i had loved, who had raised me, watched in stunned silence. Some were sympathetic, others eager to see me fall. Only Sienna rushed forward, her eyes blazing with fury.
“Lena, we need to go,” Sienna whispered urgently, pulling on my arm. “You can’t stay here.”
But i couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak. All i could hear was the pounding of my heart in my ears, louder than the voices around me, louder than anything else.
Kade had rejected me. The man i had loved, the man who was supposed to be my fated mate. And for what? To fulfill some political alliance with Evelyn Monroe, someone who would never understand him the way i had.
My wolf growled deep within me, scratching at the edges of my mind, desperate for release.
I turned toward the dense forest at the edge of the clearing, the moonlight casting long shadows across the ground. I could hear the calls of wolves in the distance, a reminder of the pack that had been my home, the life that had been taken from me in an instant.
“Lena,” Sienna said again, more firmly this time. “Please. We have to go.”
I finally broke free from my trance, my eyes still locked on Kade. He stood with Evelyn, their hands intertwined, and though he may have claimed her physically, at that moment, i knew his heart was already lost.
Without another word, i turned and ran.
My feet pounded against the earth, my lungs burning as I pushed myself farther into the woods, away from the pack, away from the world i had known. I didn’t know where i was going, didn’t care. The only thing that mattered was the relentless ache in my chest, the need to get away, to escape.
And then, just as the world began to blur around me, i felt it. The unmistakable presence of another wolf—a powerful, dangerous energy that sent a chill down my spine.
I stopped dead in my tracks, my heart racing for a different reason now. I didn’t have to turn around to know that someone was watching me. A rogue wolf.
And then, a voice broke through the silence of the forest—low, menacing, and filled with an unspoken promise.
“You should be careful, little wolf. The woods are dangerous at night.”
I spun around, my heart pounding in my chest. And there, emerging from the shadows, stood a m
an with eyes that gleamed with darkness.
The rogue Alpha.
