Fighting parents
It was a warm afternoon in Bloodmoon cove, one of the western werewolf packs in the region, which was quite rare as it was hardly ever warm here, not that it snowed but it always cold.
Standing in front of one of the simple yet modest houses on the grasslands was little Sabrina Howler.
The lovely seven year old was smiling eagerly as her sparkling green gaze shifted to look at the bouquet of flowers in her tiny hands, white roses, those where her mother's favorite and the little girl had picked it for her,she was holding it carefully to avoid being pricked by the thorns.
Sabrina straightened her pale green dress which had rumpled because of all the running she did right after stealing the flowers from a distant neighbor and she knew that if her mother found out she'd be scolded.
Irene had always warned her daughter about taking things that did not belong to her, and sabrina knew better than to disobey her mother but she had her eyes on those roses for a while and had, for a long time been intending to gift them to her mother, she even went as far as to beg for them but the cranky old woman who owned them had refused to even give her a petal, she'd rather see them wilt than give them to the little girl, so seeing no other option, sabrina had taken it—secretly, of course.
"Mama?" Sabrina called as she walked briskly towards the house, passing through the kitchen door. Her dark brown hair which had been tied into pigtails this morning by her mother had loosened from it's hold.
"Mama, guess the surprise I have for you" Sabrina said, walking into the kitchen to see her mother holding her cheek while looking at someone with a hurt expression on her face, but the little girl was too excited to even bother with whatever or whoever her mother was staring at, "I got you these" she said running to Irene with the roses in her little hands. "White roses, your favorite"
"Oh my darling.." Irene said, removing her hand from her cheek, hastily covering the area which had gone red, with her hair before stooping to place a kiss on her little girl's head while accepting the dainty flowers, "this is so sweet of you, thank you so much"
Sabrina's face beamed as she basked in her mother's love and appreciation before she finally noticed the person standing at the other end of the room.
"Papa!" Sabrina said, rushing towards her father who carried her off the ground with a little smile on his face.
"How are you, my dear?" He asked, his voice sounded colder than usual though he still gave her a smile.
"I got mama flowers, did you see them papa? Did you see?" She asked enthusiastically as her father nodded, his gaze shifting momentarily to his wife.
"Yes, there were beautiful"
Sabrina smiled, "Just like Mama"
Her father didn't say anything but instead put her down and straightened his shirt, titling his head to get a better look at his daughter.
"Be good, Sabbie" he said, calling her by her nickname and patting her head softly. "I'll be back later"
"You're going out?" It was his wife who had ask him that question and he had stood without saying a word for a minute before answering with a cold, "Yes"
"But Silas—"
Irene did not complete her words as a cold glare from her husband immediately shut her up.
Sabrina who didn't notice the tension in the room looked up at her father and asked, "Papa, where you going?"
"I have to go to Alpha rock,I've been called there" he said walking to the door.
"Papa when will you be back?" Sabrina asked as she followed him back outside, the cool wind finally loosening the pigtails and letting it cascade freely around her shoulders.
Silas turned to his daughter, "go back inside Sabbie, it's noon tell your mother to give you your lunch, I'll be back soon" and with that, he shifted—dark spiral clouds enveloping him as he turned to a fairly large deep brown wolf.
Sabrina stood there and for the millionth time, smiled at the scene that had just taken place in front of her, she loved when her father or every other werewolf shifter, shifted wolf.
Looking at his daughter for a split second, Silas turned and ran out of the meadow, towards the main town.
"Sabbie?" Sabrina turned back to skip towards her mother.
"Mama," she smiled.
"Come have your Lunch, now" Irene said, ushering her inside and closing the door.
"Mama?"
"Hm?"
"When will I get to shift wolf?"
Irene turned to her daughter who had seated her self comfortably at the table in the fairly large kitchen. She scooped a small serving of the casserole she had made earlier, put it in a bowl and set it before Sabrina.
"Soon my darling, when you're a bit older"
Sabrina pursed her lips, she had seen other kids her age shift wolf, why couldn't she?
"But It's not fair" she frowned before putting a spoonful of the casserole in her tiny mouth.
"What's that?" Irene asked, coming to sit near Sabrina.
"It's not fair that Cassie and Jeni can already shift and I can't" she frowned, her mother giggled as she put a hand on her shoulder and kissed her head.
"Cassie and Jeni are older than you dear," Irene reminded, referring to Sabrina's little friends.
"You will shift my darling," she said looking at Sabrina's green eyes which were similar to hers, "you will shift into the most beautiful wolf there ever was"
This seem to satisfy the little girl who continued eating, but not before noticing the bruise on her mother's face.
"Mama, what's that?" she said before pointing to her own face, referring to the bruise.
Irene immediately covered it with her hair as she gave a fake smile which went unnoticed by Sabrina, "it's nothing Sabbie, Mama was just a little careless in the kitchen"
"Does it hurt?"
"No" Irene lied. It hurt but the pain was mostly emotional.
Sabrina's little brows furrowed as she sighed before she leaned in, pushing away the hair and placing a little kiss on her mother's cheek.
"It will go away soon" she smiled and Irene smiled too, hoping it was true.
"Eat now" she said before standing up to go back to the sink, filling it with water and washing the dirty plates in there, the smile on her face faltering.
Sabrina was too young, way too young to know or understand what exactly was going on. She must be protected at all cost from the truth, Irene thought. But till when?
Sighing, Irene's hands moved slowly to the bruise on her cheek which was caused by the huge slap she had received from her husband, over something as little as his lunch coming in a few minutes late. It wasn't the first time and she doubted it will be the last time it would happen, Silas.... Silas had changed, he wasn't the same man she had loved and had married, it was like she was living with a different person. He hits her very often now and neglects her, hardly stays at home, threatens her with getting another woman.
Was it her? Had she done something wrong? But she had loved him, even till now. He was her mate as she was his, there were to stay in love, together till death do them part, what might have happened? It was the wolf mate magic, it was so strong that what was happening right now, shouldn't even be possible. Was it that she did not appeal to him anymore?
Irene doubted it was that. She wasn't boasting but she knew she was a beautiful woman, she had been blessed with a slender and curvy body, dark brown hair the color of mahogany wood and Jade green eyes—all these features her daughter had acquired. She sighed again, her head already starting to ache from all the thinking and assumptions.
"Mama?" Sabrina's voice jerked Irene from her thoughts, almost making her to drop a plate.
"Oh, Sabbie...you scared me" she said. Sabrina raised an eyebrow, she had been talking to her mother for the past six minutes now, trying to tell her that she had put the roses in a vase for her, but the woman hadn't answered her, had she not been listening?
"You didn't hear a word, I said?" Sabrina pouted.
"Of...Of course not my darling...I did" Irene lied with a smile,"are you done eating?" she quickly asked when she saw the half empty plate in sabrina's hands.
"Uh huh" the little girl nodded.
"You didn't finish it"
"Those are the green peas, they are yucky I don't like them"
"Hmm," Irene hummed, throwing the rest of the food into the bin before tossing the plate into the sink for washing, "learn to eat those, they are good for you"
Sabrina gagged dramatically, "no way!"
Irene did not say another word on the subject, knowing fully well that her daughter would continue to argue and oppose. Instead she cleaned her hands on her apron and turned to stare at her daughter who stared back. "How about I teach you the simple steps on how to shift wolf?"
Sabrina could not believe her ears, "Really, Mama?" She asked in excitement and when Irene nodded her head, she squealed happily,
"Yes,yes! Thank you, Mama!" she hugged her mother who smiled.
"But you have to rest first since you just ate so you don't throw up during the training" Sabrina eagerly nodded her head, running to her room for a quick nap.
Irene sighed as she cleaned up the sink and arranged the plates before going to sit at the table, leaning her back on the chair. It was probably a good idea to start training her daughter. No one knew the future, the way things were going.... Sabrina will have to be independent and take care of herself.
"Oh, heavens.." She groaned as a tear escaped her eyes and she immediately blinked it back. What exactly was happening? When did all this....
"Sabbie?" Irene called, stretching her legs as she stood up. The sooner the training began the better, just in case she wasn't here to protect her...
"What are you talking about, Irene!" She mumbled, reprimanding herself, what did she mean 'incase she wasn't here to protect her'? Silas won't hurt her....like, he won't ever go too far,...far enough to leave Sabbie without a Mother. Irene swallowed at the sad possibility of that thought.
"Sabrina?" Irene called again but didn't get an answer, didn't Sabrina just leave to her room? Not wanting to shout her name again, Irene decided to walk to her daughter's room, to wake her if she was asleep.
Reaching the door of sabrina's room, Irene turned the knob and pushed it open with little force and stepped inside.
"Sabbie?" She called even before her eyes found her daughter.
"Sabrina, I thought—" immediately, Irene's eyes went wide open as she let out a gasp, "Sabrina!" She screamed.
Sabrina had immediately hopped on her fluffy bed once she stepped into her room, she had already begun fluffing up her pillow to rest her head when she realized she still had her shoes on, climbing back down from the bed, she stood at the edge of her bed, stooping down to remove her shoes. When she had successfully removed one, she stared to remove the other when she noticed the sudden darkness that had started to engulf her room, raising her head up, she was startled to find someone in front of her.
The person or creature—she wasn't sure which gender, towered above her, it was in all black with some strange smoke like shadow emanating from behind.
"Who are you?" She asked, her voice coming out in a whisper as fear rose in her chest.
The creature did not answer but instead took long strides towards her, the black smoke following it as it came, in panic Sabrina screamed for her mother but strangely, not a sound came out of her mouth.
She decided to run out of the room but felt glued to where she stood, someone was terribly wrong and she was getting scared. She watched in horror the way the person brought it's long black hands forward, gently wrapping it around her neck, pulling her up, her little feet dangling in the air.
"Sabbie?" She heard her mother call from the kitchen but she couldn't answer, she just dangled, the person's fingers slowly choking her.
"Sabrina" her mother called again but of course, she got no response.
Blinking away the tears in her eyes, she looked up at the creature whose eyes were glowing red, the face was as black as the rest of the body and as it opened it's mouth, she saw something glowing in it, sucking the air around her that was turning to a strange pale white into it's mouth and Sabrina who was still confused as to what was happening felt strength leave her body, the feeling of weakness slowly engulfing her.
"Sabrina" the door slowly opened and she heard the approaching footsteps of her mother.
"Sabrina, I thought—" her mother gasped, "Sabrina!"
In the next second Sabrina heard a deep growling, the creature holding her staggered, the grip on her neck loosening and with a deep thud she fell on the ground.
Irene launched towards the person after shifting to her wolf form, trying to grab flesh in between her huge canines. As the creature leaned tiredly on the edge of Sabrina's bed, holding the side of it's arm which had been torn by Irene, where instead of the wound to bleed, it was the dark smoke that came out of the wound. Seeing the person distracted, Irene launched forward with her paw to only scratch the mattress of the bed, looking back in confusion to see that the creature had disappeared.
"You should have been more careful!" Silas voice echoed in the house as Irene told him what happened a few hours ago, but it was not enough to wake up the unconscious Sabrina who lay in her parents bedroom.
"What did I do?" Irene asked back, her face a mixture of suprise and hurt, "I just told you that some 'thing' appeared in Sabrina's room and tried to suck out all her life essence and you're telling me I should have been more careful? careful of what? How would I have known, or are you informing it's already 'life–sucking–creatures' season?" The sarcasm was present in her last words.
The expression on Silas face was enough to make Irene flinch, but she tried not to show it, "Don't use that tone on me, woman!"
Irene bit her lips, "or what? You'll beat me again—"
"I just might," Silas snarled, "and I might do even worse with the fact that you couldn't even protect our daughter!"
Irene heaved a deep breath and broke into a fit of frustrated laughter, her body shaking as tears flowed freely down her face and she didn't try to stop it, "protect our daughter? PROTECT OUR DAUGHTER?" she half screamed.
"What about you, Silas?"
She said, pointing a finger at him, "What have you done in protecting her? The only thing you have been doing is blaming me for all the things you can't do as a married man and as a father—"
SLAP!
