CHAPTER 3. THE TALE OF THE WHITE WOLF

1603 Words
ANDREW'S POV I let out a growl when I see my mate is taken. "Is it possible she has two mates? Do we have to share her?" I ask my wolf, who is just as confused as I am. "We have to kill him. Whoever it is, he needs to die. We won't be sharing." My wolf responds resolute. There aren't many cases of wolves who find a second mate when they are already marked, I recall one several years ago in a pack far away. The wolves fought to the death as it is the law. The winner took his mate, but she took her life a few years later. The pack disappeared mysteriously, and nobody heard of a similar case before. Until now. I want to approach her, but as soon as I take a step, she shifts into a magnificent white wolf. I have never seen a wolf like hers before. It is white with lavander strands all over and hypnotizing deep purple eyes with black swirls. Everyone in the room gasps when they see her shift. Some people even look scared of her. She wastes no time and jumps from an open window, I want to run after her, but I am suddenly detained by two warriors. "How did you do that? Who are you?" A heavily pregnant woman comes at me with fury in her eyes. By her aura, she must be the Luna. "I don't know what you are talking about, let me go! I need to go after my mate!" The moment I say this, everyone starts gasping and looking concerned. "Impossible!" I hear someone in the back say "Why is her wolf different? Could the tale of the white wolf be true?" Someone else says. I am not paying much attention. Everyone is talking at once. "Let me go!" My wolf starts taking over. If we don't get an explanation soon, I am going to shift right here. "What the hell is going on? Alpha Scott's voice booms through the house. " Did you try to attack my Luna in my territory? "Is nothing like that, Scott. You can calm down." The Luna responds. "Then explain, Why is my guest being held down by two warriors?" He asks, upset. "Release him!" He commands the warriors who immediately take their hands off me and retreat. "Scott, this Beta claims to be Evey's mate, but before she could confirm, she shifted and took off." Alpha Scott looks surprised to learn that fact. I am starting to get annoyed with all of this. "I want my mate! Bring her here!" I demand. My wolf is getting desperate, and when he gets like that, nobody can stop him. He can kill anyone in his path if provoked. "Mr. Hawthorn, please follow me. We need to talk." The Alpha tells me and guides me back to his office. He takes a seat and signals the seat in front of me, and I sit. "Beta, I don't doubt when you say that Evey is your mate, but it does come as a surprise. Evey is a dear member of my family. She is my mate's cousin. They grew up together like sisters, and this pack will protect her and always help her any way we can." "You can't keep me from her. I saw her mark and not even that man can keep me from her. The law says I have the right to fight for her. I will fight to the death." I am hanging from a thread. I want to kill, and they can't deny me that right. "You won't have to fight anyone. You are Evey's second chance. Her first mate was the gamma of our pack. He died on the attack four years ago. Evey still has a hard time continuing with her life, but she is trying. She now has a shop of natural remedies in town and helps our pack when doctors struggle to find answers." So she is free to come with me. She must be in shock to know she had a second chance, if only I could talk to her, to let her know that I can take it as slow as she wants, all I care about is to get to know her. "I need to talk to her, I just want to know where she stands in all of this." I plead. I am in foreign territory, and this pack just became our ally, I can't make demands. "We are looking for her. Andrew, after the death of her mate, Evey stopped shifting. Her wolf simply would not respond to her. Evey described it as connected but dormant. She basically became a human living amongst wolves, but it looks like your bond woke her wolf, and maybe they can connect again." I can't imagine what it is like to be able to feel your wolf and not being able to reach it. My wolf hauls in pain just to know what our mate has been through all these years. The Alpha is looking at me concerned, I know there is something else in his mind that he doesn't know how to approach. "I care about my mate. All I need is time with her." I ask. "Have you heard about the White wolf tale?" He suddenly asks, dismissing my comment. "All due respect, Alpha, I don't know why an old tale told by the elders is important here. The white wolf does not exist as far as I'm concerned. The elders used that story to scare werewolves from mating with other species unless it was their mate." It is an old tale that has changed over the years, but they teach it to all werewolves, so they wait for their mate as long as they have to, just to avoid unnecessary wars. " Our mate's wolf is white with some lavander splashed throughout." My wolf interjects "Is just a story, hardly belivable. Fairies don't leave their realm without facing a punishment." The story has to be at least 100 years. Some say the fairy had a child, and her descendants will avenge her when the time comes. Others say that she faced death as a punishment for leaving her realm, but everyone agrees about the dormant wolf that will be born from the golden moon. "I heard what Evey's wolf looks like, and I am afraid the tale is a prophecy." I want to laugh at his nonsense, but he is serious and even looks a little scared, so I contain my laughter. "All wolves are different. White wolves are not very common, but they exist, especially in this region where we are close to the mountains." I dismiss him. "Wolves don't suddenly change colors. Evey's wolf was a special kind of honey color that looked like gold shimmering under the sun. It was special, it had a certain sensitivity, it could sense danger before it happened, it could feel pain from others, when someone or something was almost dead somehow being close to Evey would bring them back to life enough to say their goodbyes to their loved ones. I don't think she noticed, but the rest of us, including her mate, did, and it was amazing. Her dormant wolf came back today after seeing you and discovering you are her second chance mate and now is white, but not just white it has purple specs, and her eyes are a deep purple." I am now astonished. Wolves do not change colors, not that I know of any way. "We shouldn't be afraid of our mate. She is supposed to free the land from her oppressor and bring peace to both realms, the fae, and the wolves." My wolf reminds me. " Alpha, my mate must be as confused as we are right now. I want to talk to her, please just let me see her. I won't force her to come home with me, but I have to talk to her." I want to comfort her and tell her that whatever happens, I will keep her safe. "As soon as we find her, you can talk to her. For now, you are welcome to take a look at our land and even go for a run. I'm sure your wolf must be impatient." I just nod and get up, I have to see if I can find her. When I head to the entrance, the women from earlier are still there, laughing and playing games, but they get quiet when they see me. whispers start flooding the room, all about my mate and if she is dangerous or cursed. My wolf does not appreciate it, and let's out a warning growl that quiets the room. The Luna looks at me sympathetically and then with determination and comes at me. "Leaving so soon?' She says, looking me up and down like studying me. "I won't go until I have spoken to my mate." I tell her. At this moment, I realized I have ignored my phone, and I have several missed calls from the pack. "I will stay here if necessary, but I will speak with my mate." I don't even wait for a response, I turn around and leave her standing there while everyone is looking at me in disapproval. Once out, I call my pack. Something must be very wrong if they are trying to reach me so hard. "Andrew, thank Goddess. You need to come back. Pam tried to kill Luna, and Alpha is going crazy. We need you." Harold, our lead warrior, let's me know.
