Chapter 1: New Beginnings
Iris Jones had always felt like an outsider. Growing up in an orphanage, she was no stranger to hardship. At twenty-two, she was an intern at the prestigious Edelweiss Grand Hotel, the largest and most opulent hotel in Germany. The hotel's grandeur was matched only by its cold and impersonal atmosphere. The marble floors gleamed under crystal chandeliers, and the walls were adorned with intricate tapestries and gold accents that screamed luxury. Yet, for Iris, it was just a beautiful prison.
Today was different, though. Today, her life was about to change.
"Iris," Mr. Schneider, her boss, called out as he approached her desk. He was a tall, stern man with a neatly trimmed beard and a perpetual frown etched on his face.
"Yes, Mr. Schneider?" Iris replied, standing up quickly, her heart pounding.
"We’ve decided to make your position here permanent. Congratulations, you are now a full-time employee."
Iris felt a rush of relief and joy. She had been living paycheck to paycheck, barely scraping by. Her wardrobe consisted of a few second-hand dresses and worn-out shoes. The thought of a stable income was overwhelming.
"Thank you, Mr. Schneider! Thank you so much!" she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion.
Mr. Schneider gave a curt nod. "You start tomorrow as an official employee. Don’t be late."
As he walked away, Iris pulled out her phone and called her boyfriend, Jacob Kans. Jacob was a handsome man, but his looks masked a cold, manipulative personality. He was with Iris for the little money she had and the benefits he could squeeze out of her. Iris knew he was a cheater and a liar, but she was too afraid of loneliness to leave him.
"Hey, Jacob! I have great news!" Iris said excitedly.
"Yeah, what is it?" Jacob's voice was disinterested, as usual.
"I got the job! I'm a permanent employee now. I can finally pay my rent and maybe even save a little."
"Nice," Jacob replied flatly.
Iris bit her lip, trying not to let his indifference ruin her mood. "How about we celebrate tonight? My treat. We could go to La Belle Vie, that new restaurant everyone’s talking about."
There was a pause on the line. "Sure, whatever," Jacob finally said.
"Great! I'll see you tonight at seven," Iris said, trying to keep the enthusiasm in her voice.
After hanging up, Iris felt a pang of disappointment but quickly shook it off. She had worked hard for this moment and wouldn't let Jacob's lack of enthusiasm ruin it.
As she walked through the ornate hallways of the hotel, she overheard a group of employees talking in hushed tones. They were standing near the grand staircase, their designer clothes and expensive accessories a stark contrast to Iris's simple attire.
"Did you hear? They actually made Iris permanent," one woman sneered. Her name was Victoria, and she was the epitome of wealth and privilege.
"Unbelievable. I don’t know what they see in her. She’s just an orphan with no connections," another chimed in.
Iris’s heart sank as she listened to their cruel words. She had always known she wasn’t accepted by her colleagues, but hearing it so openly hurt more than she expected. Determined not to let them see her pain, she walked past them with her head held high.
Iris arrived at La Belle Vie wearing a stunning gown she had saved for special occasions. The dress was a deep emerald green that complemented her fair skin and blue eyes. It was elegantly simple, with a fitted bodice and a flowing skirt that made her feel like a princess. Her hair was styled in loose waves, pinned back with a delicate silver clip. Her makeup was understated but flawless, with a touch of eyeliner to highlight her eyes and a soft pink lipstick.
She waited at the table, nervously glancing at the clock as the minutes ticked by. Seven o'clock came and went, and there was no sign of Jacob. By eight o'clock, she was fidgeting with her napkin, feeling increasingly anxious. She called him several times, but each call went straight to voicemail.
By nine o'clock, Iris was not only worried but also furious. She couldn't understand why Jacob would stand up on such an important night. Finally, she decided she couldn't wait any longer. She gathered her things and made her way to the exit, her mood dark and her heart heavy.
As she walked past a black door labeled "Private," she heard the sound of laughter. Something about it made her pause. It was Jacob's laugh, unmistakably. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she approached the door. Just as she was about to open it, a burly security guard stepped in her path.
"Ma'am, this is a private room. You can't go in there," he said firmly.
Ignoring him, Iris shoved past and pushed the door open. What she saw made her blood boil.
Jacob was sitting at a lavishly set table with a beautiful woman draped over him. The woman had long, blonde hair styled in perfect waves and was wearing a tight, red dress that clung to her curves. She was laughing at something Jacob had said, her hand resting possessively on his arm.
The room was filled with soft candlelight and the murmur of low conversations. The atmosphere was intimate and exclusive, a stark contrast to the cold indifference she had felt from Jacob earlier.
"Jacob!" Iris's voice rang out, cutting through the laughter and chatter. Everyone in the room turned to look at her, but she only had eyes for Jacob.
Jacob looked up, surprise flashing across his face before it was replaced by a sneer. "What are you doing here, Iris?" he said, his tone dripping with disdain.
"I could ask you the same thing," she snapped. "I waited for you for hours. You didn't pick up my calls. And here you are, with her."
The blonde woman glanced at Jacob, smirking. "Is this the charity case you told me about?" she said, loud enough for Iris to hear.
Jacob laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "Yes, she's the one. Always so needy and desperate. It's pathetic."
Iris felt her cheeks burn with humiliation and rage. Without thinking, she walked up to Jacob and slapped him hard across the face. The sound echoed in the room, and everyone gasped.
"I can't believe I wasted so much time on you," she said, her voice shaking with emotion. "You're toxic, a liar, and a cheat. I'm done with you, Jacob. I deserve so much better."
Jacob's expression turned dark. "You think you can just walk away? You're nothing without me."
Iris met his gaze, her eyes filled with determination. "Watch me."
With that, she turned on her heel and walked out of the room, leaving Jacob and his date in stunned silence. As she exited the restaurant, her heart pounded with a mixture of anger and relief. She knew she had made the right decision, and she felt a sense of freedom she hadn't felt in years.
Back at her tiny apartment, Iris sat on her bed and allowed herself to cry. Not for Jacob, but for all the wasted time and the pain he had caused her. But as the tears fell, she also felt a growing sense of strength. She was free from him now, and she could finally start to build a life on her own terms.
Little did she know, this newfound freedom was just the beginning of a journey that would lead her to places she never imagined, testing her resilience and opening her heart to new possibilities.
How will Iris cope with the hostility from her colleagues and the relentless criticism from her boss, and will she find any allies in the hotel to help her through her struggles?
