Chapter 1: Bankruptcy
Natasha was sitting on a plane as she looked out from the window. She felt numb and couldn’t believe that her family was ruined while she was studying abroad. Even when she suffered quite an injury from her accident, it didn’t mean anything as she had lost everything.
Natasha closed her eyes as she remembered her uncle's exact words when he delivered the news.
“Natasha, our family went bankrupt. Your father couldn’t handle that everything was gone and jumped off the building. Your mother- she ran away with someone else. It turns out that she has an affair behind your father’s back.”
Natasha sighed as she finally opened her eyes. The flight attendant noticed something was wrong and asked if she needed help. Natasha shook her head before giving the flight attendant a small smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes.
When Natasha got off the plane, her emotions collapsed. Unable to hold back her tears, she knelt at the airport entrance. She knows everyone looks at her with confusing looks, but she doesn’t care. All Natasha could think about is how is she going to face the music.
As the world was against her, Natasha’s phone rang, and Richard was calling. Natasha takes a few deep breaths while wiping her tears as she accepts the call from her fiancé.
"Richard, I-“
Ada answered the call and sobbed,
"Where are you... Something happened to my family..."
"Tasha, calm down. I already know what happened to your family. Just wait for me. I'll be back in A City soon. Be good, don't cry."
Richard comforted her on the phone for a while before Natasha finally composed herself and hung up. Natasha finally smiled after she heard her fiancé’s words of encouragement. She exited the floor, took a deep breath, and braved the new world.
Natasha knows that whatever happens, Richard will always have her back.
Meanwhile, in C City-
Richard ended the call with Natasha. He sighed as he massaged his temple. There was no trace of his previous tenderness on his face. Instead, a hint of irritation appeared between his eyebrows. Richard thought he could finally live leisurely if he were married to Natasha, but the universe seemed to be against him.
"What's wrong, Richard?"
A voluptuous woman on the bed wrapped herself around him and asked in a gentle voice,
"Are you not happy? I thought we just had the best night of our life. Am I not enough to feed your pleasure?”
Richard smirked before kissing the woman on the lips. He responded as he pulled away.
“You think? Something happened to Natasha’s family. And here I thought Natasha could turn their luck around if she were to study abroad. I was wrong. Damn it! There goes all my luxury. How am I supposed to continue living like this?”
Amanda's eyes flashed with a hint of disdain upon hearing this. She let out a sigh of relief and said,
“Well, what are you worried about? I’m here. Also, it’s about time for that b***h’s family to collapse. How long could their empty shell of a company last? Everyone knows that Natasha’s uncle is the culprit. And yet they let that man run the company. Anyway, isn’t it a good thing for her company to collapse? So what’s with the long faces?”
Richard ran his finger through his brown hair and said,
“It's a big deal. I have to go back and see her. I promise her that I’ll be there for her.”
Richard said as he reached for his clothes, but Amanda stopped him immediately.
"Wait- hold on. Where are you going? You promise me that you’ll spend your time with me today. You're not allowed to go back and accompany her."
Richard sighed before caressing Amanda’s cheek with a smile.
"I know. But this is an emergency. And please don’t be difficult. I promise I’ll spend some time with you. Come on- you believe me, right?”
Richard gave a sad look, which made Amanda feel a little guilty for stopping him from leaving.
“Amanda, we initially agreed that it was just a fling. My family, especially my mom, adores Natasha the most. She's the only woman who will marry into the Baker family."
Amanda slapped Richard’s hand away.
"f**k off!"
Amanda became extremely upset. She turned her head away angrily and said,
"Fine, just go then! Just go and kiss Natasha up her a*s for all I care. I understand that you only need me when you’re horny and alone! Once you leave, don't come find me again!"
Richard smirked as he saw how cute Amanda was when she was angry.
“What’s so funny?! Am I a joke to you now, too?!”
Richard watched as Amanda exited the bed and walked towards the window without covering herself. Richard grabbed a robe and placed it on her body before giving her a back hug.
“Amanda, darling- you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. So please make that face. Alright- I know how to make you happy.”
Richard pulled away from the hug and gave Amanda a set of keys.
“This is your new car. Didn’t you say you always wanted to drive an Aston Martin like one of those James Bond girls? Well- I got them for you.”
To appease Amanda’s wrath, Richard casually gave her the luxury car he had recently bought. Amanda finally smiled as she took the keys.
"Alright. You’re forgiven. But promise me that you will come back to me as soon as you can. Who knows, I might be waiting for you with a new set of lingerie.”
Richard laughed before giving Amanda one last passionate kiss.
“I’ll miss you, darling. Have fun with your new car.”
Richard said before he put on his clothes and left for A City.
Amanda watched his departing figure and slowly took out her phone. Looking at the photos she took on her phone, a faint smirk appeared on her lips.
“Well, Natasha, you used to be the ‘IT’ girl. And now, you’re nothing but a speck of dust. How does it feel to have your fiancé cheating on you? You have always had the upper hand, but now you don’t. What else do you have left to compete with me?”
Amanda scoffed.
Back in A City,
Natasha was mindlessly walking through the packed airport as she tried to make it out when she accidentally hit someone standing by. Natasha lost her balance and landed butt-first on the floor.
The man turned around and offered his hand for Natasha to take.
“I’m sorry.”
Natasha grabbed the man’s hand before she looked up to a well-dressed man with a slight smile on her face. Natasha was surprised to see a beautiful man with the most mesmerizing smile standing before her. Even Richard couldn’t compete with how gentleman-like the man she accidentally hit.
“It seems you were hurt. I’m sorry. I should have been more mindful of my surroundings. I was looking for someone. Let me help you. I-“
Natasha smiled and told the man that she was all right. The man was about to give his card to Natasha when Natasha left without saying anything.
“Sir Lucas? I’ve been looking all over for you. I thought I told you to wait by the cafe for me. Why did you leave?”
Eric, the secretary of Lucas, the current CEO of Hawthorne Corporation, asked. Lucas waved his hand as he looked around for the woman who hit him earlier. He doesn’t know why, but he wants to see her again.
“Did something happen? Are you looking for someone?”
Eric looks around to see if anyone caught Lucas’s attention.
“I thought I saw someone whom I’ve been looking for. But as I was about to call out to her, someone hit me from behind and fell on the floor. I helped her up and was about to offer my card if she ever wanted compensation when she left. And now I can’t seem to find her.”
Eric hummed.
“I can look for her if you like. What does she look like?”
Lucas smiled as he tried to remember how the woman he met briefly.
“She has long, wavy brown hair and hazel eyes. That woman was wearing a grey suit with a black suitcase. She has thin lips with almond-shaped eyes.”
Eric was astounded by how detailed the description was.
“Sir, I can’t help you with that description. But perhaps we could find those who wore grey suits. But for now, we have a schedule to attend to. I advise that we leave now before things get dire.”
Lucas sighed. He hoped that one day he could meet that woman again. And the next time he did, he’d surely ask for her name.
Meanwhile,
Natasha left the airport with her mind in a fog. She didn’t know where to go as she wandered alongside the road. Because she doesn’t have enough money to call for a taxi, she has no choice but to walk back to her last known address.
Natasha had never thought that her life would turn out this way. Since she was born, she grew up without worrying about anything. She has such a happy and memorable life, but how did it all change quickly?
Without Natasha noticing, a black Roll-Royce was following her slowly.
“Sir, there’s a woman that walks alongside the road. It seems she’s injured or something because she seems limping. And she is wearing a grey suit. Is that the woman you’re looking for?”
Eric, who was driving, said as Lucas looked at his phone. Eric had been the CEO's secretary at Hawthorne Corporation for over a decade, guiding them through the previous chairman and the current CEO.
“That’s her alright. But she wasn’t limping when she left earlier. That woman should have told me to compensate her or bring her to the hospital instead of ignoring me. Why would she hide the fact that she’s hurt from me?”
Lucas sighed. Eric hummed.
“So what should we do now?”
Lucas thought for a moment and said,
“Follow her.”
