CHAPTER 1
I can feel the ground vibrate beneath me as I run.
I didn’t even know when I got to the woods. Well, my mom’s attitude is more than enough to chase anyone out of the house and her life.
Something is chasing me. I can feel it. The thing is, I’m sure they’re faster, swifter and definitely stronger. The trees get thicker and the ground is getting more slippery by each passing second.
Just as I’m about to jump the huge tree trunk lying on the floor, I trip and fall.
Fuck.
“Are you tired yet?” a deep rich voice asks. I’m shaking and I can feel it. I feel the blood trickle down my face. When I don’t answer or look up, he speaks again. “We could keep going.”
What kind of strange man enjoys the cat and rat game? Well, he’s enjoying it while I think I’m going to have a heart attack.
“Who are you?” I finally ask, hating the sound of my voice immediately. He smirks at me and walks towards me slowly.
He holds out a hand for me to shake. I do not trust anybody who holds out their hand to me on the first meeting.
They hold your hand, they’re trying to take control of your destiny. He tsks as I don’t take his hand. He rubs them on his jeans.
I finally sit up, not minding the dirt staining my jeans. I mean, if this man was going to kill me, he would have done so by now. I should be having blood spurring through my neck right now while my body head rolls on the floor.
“Arden Thane,” he says anyway. “And you?”
“Taylor!” mom screams and I get up immediately. Did she have to wake me up from something like that? I was about to tell the handsome man in my dreams, my name.
“What?” I ask, frowning. She would kill me if I went downstairs looking sleepy she had asked me to get her some bread from the market. The problem is not me buying the bread. The problem is going through the woods to actually get it.
My mom is a heavy believer of the whole werewolf thing. She fears them too. Its a shame the heavens didn’t listen to her because the woods is just behind our tiny apartment.
The elders of our tiny community here at Vincehill say they made a pact with the werewolves to protect us. But now, there are traitors among us. So no girl is allowed to go out at night. I believe the whole thing about wolves. You can practically hear them howling behind us. But werewolves? Nah.
Not that I’m going to listen to them anyway. Werewolves are mythological creatures. And anyone thinking that they would encounter one in real life is just being delusional. Werewolves won’t make it past the pages of fantasy novels.
Am I making sense?
“Taylor!” she screams again.
I hurry up to wash my face and head downstairs, smiling to myself and humming the last song I heard on the radio.
“Have you bought the bread I asked you to?” she asks.
I put on my ‘forgive me for being forgetful’ face. Even if I’m not sorry at all.
“I’m sorry mama. I was reading my new novel and-”
“Shut up!” she says and I shut up immediately. “What are we going to have for dinner if you don’t get the bread?”
“I’ll get it,” I say and she stops chopping the onions immediately. I notice her eyes. She’s tired. Her hair is greying excessively too at this point. Maybe if we could just stop arguing and fill in the void dad had left, things would get better.
“I won’t let you go anywhere. Its a full moon today. What do you think you want to do? Leave me here to die and rot in hell? You’re the only one I have left.”
“Nothing’s going to happen to me,” I drawl. “I’ll go, and I’ll be back in a jiffy. I promise.” Is it too much to understand?
“Maybe you should just go back to your room. And do something better with you life. Because as it, reading is the only thing you do these days.” I’m already at the door, ready to head out when she adds. “Take a look at Jenice’s daughter. She went to Ireland for her Masters degree. And then look at you. You weren’t even able to finish college.”
My hands are balled in fists. I turn the doorknob so hard that I’m scared I will break it.
“I’ll be back,” I tell her and head out.
I squint my eyes when the strong wind hits me, taking my skirt up. I didn’t know it was this cold. I would’ve worn something better.
I shut the door to the house and lock the door, disposing the key in the pocket of the skirt. I wouldn’t want my mom worrying or going out to look for me when I take a minute or two to come home.
“f**k you!” I hear her scream and my mood is instantly ruined. Does she have to compare me to Jenice’s daughter every time?
I start heading out, keeping my head down to stop the wind from slapping my face. I tie my hair into a rough bun in the process. I can’t have my hair flying around like a mad woman.
The woods is dark. Quiet. Still. Unlike what’s going on in the community. The full moon is in full sight. Seems like mom was right anyway.
The trees are getting thicker and I can hear the rustling of leaves. I’m being followed. The hairs at the back of my neck stand up. Could mom have gotten out through the window? Or is it just another person on their way to the market? The ground is getting slippery. I try to steady my feet, to prevent me from falling.
“Who are you?” he asks.
