“It can’t happen!” I hear one of the council chiefs scream.
“It just happened, and I swear I felt it,” Alpha says.
“You rejected the last one. So why this one?” another chief asks. I can tell from their frail voices. I’m shocked they are still able to scream.
“My second and last chance,” I hear Alpha say, reducing his voice.
“What’s going on?” I ask Damien. He pushes me further with my arms.
“They are debating on how to slit your neck,” he says in a teasing tone. I know he’s joking but he might just be serious.
I’m made to fall on my knees and the council chief’s mouths are curled in distaste. Alpha turns to look at me. Hell, I wish I had asked for his actual name earlier.
His eyes literally devour me as I crawl towards the centre of the hall. The council chiefs are sitting on huge chairs, overseeing everything. Their chairs are at least fifty feet tall.
“Cover her up,” one of them says and a blanket is thrown over my body. So much for stitching.
“So much for stitching,” Alpha smirks as I kneel beside him.
“f**k off,” I whisper and he faces the council with his hands at his sides, all dressed in black.
Another woman dressed in red walks over to face the council chiefs. She clears her throat and starts speaking.
“Earlier this evening, Miss Taylor Remor was caught by Beta Damien and Delta Lionel, trespassing and walking into the pack’s territory. She resisted capturing, hence causing injuries to the wolves involved.”
“Point of correction, I was abducted by your Beta and Delta,” I say, frowning.
“Quiet, lady,” one of the chiefs says and I shut up immediately.
The lady saying rubbish eyes me and continues speaking. “She was brought here successfully, by both wolves and bound in the dungeon. She awoke ten hours later and was brought to see Alpha Arden when the full moon surfaced and the meeting came to an abrupt end. Miss Taylor denied any accusations.” Who is this b***h? “She said she didn’t know who Alpha Victor from the Corryl pack is. However, when a poll was held, more than fifty percent of the pack thinks she’s lying.”
She finally ends her excuse of a speech and I can finally breathe properly.
“Does Miss Taylor have anything to say?”
“I don’t know anybody. According to what I’ve heard, you can smell if I’m a werewolf or not. Aren’t your noses working anymore? I understand everyone is still overwhelmed from everything that went on in the mating field. Its clearly none of my business. I have a mother who has been waiting for me to come back home. If you would allow me, I would like to go back to the market, buy my bread, and go back home.”
By the time I’m done, they are all gasping. I didn’t even notice the long rows of chairs behind me where the lower ranked wolves are staring with their hands to their mouths.
“How dare she talk to the council like this?”
Her neck will definitely be slit.”
“The Alpha will definitely slap her anytime soon.”
The council chiefs are staring at me.
“Alpha Arden, do you have any steps you want to take?” they ask him and I look up at him.
Arden… his names strikes a nerve in my brain. But I can’t quite place it.
He places his hands on my head, running his hands through my hair. I let out a low groan at the back of my throat. Almost like a purr. Or a tiny growl of approval. He stares at me. He heard it too. His eyes darken again.
“Miss Taylor Romér will be kept as a captive at the Pack’s Estate for the minimum of two weeks.” My eyes shoot up immediately. I thought he was going to say I can go home now.
The council members talk amongst themselves. What would I tell mom if I finally make it home? What if they never let me go? What if they make me a slave in their empire?
Beta Damien comes and joins Alpha Arden. He doesn’t say anything but I’m sure as hell that they are communicating. Their eye language says everything. The council members face us back again. I know they are waiting for me to cry. Never.
Never will I try such in public anymore. I’m the outcast here. The only different person in the midst of a whole community of shape shifters.
“Alpha Arden,” one of the council chief calls out and Arden and Damien stop their secret communication. “do you highly certify the safety of the pack and the captive?”
Awwn, they are concerned about my safety too.
Arden turns back to look at the whole pack behind him. “The safety of the pack has been my priority ever since I have been given the position of the Alpha. And I hereby pledge and assure the council chiefs and the whole pack, that everybody is safe as long as I remain the Alpha.”
They cheer like idiots.
The council chiefs nod in approval. “You shall hereby be responsible for everything concerning the captive. You will be put to blame if anything goes wrong in the pack concerning Miss Romér.”
He nods. “Fear not, council members. I take full responsibility of the captive. And I have one more request.”
Another stupid cheer erupts in the crowd. With the way they are screaming, it feels like I misheard the fact that I was going to be killed. Maybe it was just the endorphins and the effect of the full moon.
“And what is that?”
The blanket offered to me sticks to my skin all thanks to the sweat, heat and the anxiousness I feel right now.
Arden and Damien are having that their secret conversation. Arden gives a small nod before proceeding to say something.
“I request that the captive shares the same room with me.”
