Jasmines POV
Jasmine wake up. I heard someone poke in my head. Then I felt someone move my own head with theirs. I opened my eyes to see my father’s snout pushing mine in effort to rouse me and I now realized it was him in my head as well.
I am awake father. I tell him groggily as I roll to my paws and stretch my hind legs and then my front legs and shake out my furry coat. My father waiting on me butted in my head again.
Come on Jaz you are going to be late for your first patrol. My father annoyed voice boomed in my head. Lets go then. I told him, not going to let him blame anything on me.
The patrols have been doing hand off reports one on one so my father would report to his area, and I would report to mine. My father nodded over to me to the patrol next to his. I knew he wouldn’t let me get far with out him. Brock was the wolf’s name that was handing off to me. He was the same age as I was and had always trained as a warrior.
Morning Jasmine, No disturbances on my patrols in the last 2.5 hours. You will start here and go down about two hundred and fifty yards and return. Patrolling that same lot. If you scent any wolf that isn’t pack immediately report it to Alpha and he or another warrior will be right with you to check it out. Under no circumstances are you to investigate on your own. Check in every thirty minutes with other patrols. Any questions comrade? Brock gave his full report to me and instructions on what they had been doing while I got my five hours of sleep. No questions, Brock. Thank you. Get some rest. Brock nodded at me and trotted off I am sure to get some well-deserved rest. The middle patrol sucked. Sleep two and half hours and then patrol two and half hours and then sleep for two and half more hours. Luckily, I got last patrol- well luck probably had nothing to do with it. The men baby sitting me probably thought it was best and were looking out for me this way. I wouldn’t complain about solid sleep though.
As I traced the path that had our tracks and Brock’s scent it was rather easy to follow the patrol he had been doing. I had to remember to keep pace though. The way it works was that no two of our wolfs meet leaving the least amount of time in an area undisturbed and giving the smallest window possible if someone tried to break through our patrol.
However, this far back from the front line that was very unlikely. We were still a little over a day from the front lines. An enemy would have had to travel miles out of the way to avoid the battles and come around to this side of us in order to attack. While it could happen the possibilities of It were unlikely. However, that’s why we patrolled just in case.
The sun would be rising when my patrol was over and we would be off again to run towards the battle front. This time would pass slowly.
I listened to the crickets chirp off in a distance. The insects and smaller creatures like rabbits and squirrels run from predators like us so I had to focus to hear them far away. When I was younger mother would drive us into a town an hour or so away where there were no wolfs in the area and we would camp in our human form. Her favorite part was hearing the crickets chirp and the birds singing in the mornings. We hadn’t been since she died.
One day I would like to do it again, maybe with my own children if the Moon Goddess has that in the cards for me. I sniffed the air and kept patrolling my area. I had reached the end of my path and already turned around and circled a couple times when it was time to check in and I heard everyone report out.
Patrol check in. – My father rang out
No unusual activity to report.
Next. – My father ordered.
No unusual activity to report.
Next. – My father ordered out again.
No unusual activity to report.
Next. – My father ordered out again.
No unusual activity to report.- I answered.
This went on until all ten patrols had checked in. It was kind of boring but right now boring meant safe and I wanted my warriors to rest while they could. This repeated on for the next two hours when the sun started peaking through the trees of the thick forest around us. It highlighted the sky shades of orange and pink before lighting it all blue with just a few clouds scattered above. We did out last report out and we all circled up to wake our sleeping comrades before heading out again.
I made my way over to James and Theo. Funny sight that is was. They were back-to-back as well like they were for me.
I leaned my snout down and licked the side of Theo’s face. His eyes immediately popping open and jumping up looking at me.
Hey now! I didn’t agree to any public displays of affection! He teased me through our mind link.
Oh yeah? I don’t remember agreeing to anything with you. My wolf laughed at him as he shook out his fur. His quick movement also jolted James where he was leaning on him causing him to wake as well.
What are you two doing? Can’t I guy get some sleep? James complained through the mind link to both me and Theo.
Sleepy time is over bub. It’s time to wake and get going again. I told my brother. His wolf groaned at me, protesting the idea, and wanting to sleep more. However, James forced his wolf to their feet and stretched and shook and finally looked awake.
Leaving out in five. – Alpha
My father’s voice rang out through the pack’s mind link. We all walked around a few minutes and took the time to scurry off in small groups to use the restrooms and come back all gathering in a formation around my father and James at the front and myself and Theo just a little behind them. We waited just another moment before my father let out a loud but short howl signaling our leave to our warriors and took off in a jog. And like good warriors we followed.
