Chad POV
We ran all day only slowing to allow our wolf’s to grab something to eat. My wolf was not choosey and grabbed a couple rabbits ahead of our group and dropping the bones as he ate the meat off. I hated eating in this form. My enjoyed the hunt, the chase, and the victory followed by the warm meat. I much prefer eating like a regular human but that was a luxury I would not be afforded any time soon.
I was getting dusk soon and we would stop and rest for the night again.

An couple hours later the sun had set behind the mountains and we were slowing down and had pick an area for the night to rest. There was a huge hill and rocks about with a large indent so it was almost like a cave but offered some coverage.
A couple pack member shifted back into their human form. They throw on some shorts and was using some rocks to make a circle for a fire pit and gathering some sticks. They were making a fire so we could eat and put it out quickly. It only took them a couple minutes to do so and had several squirrels and rabbits alike on it. Another had found some berry bushes near by and had gathered a bunch of those for everyone to snack on until the meat was done.
Patrol stay in wolf form. Everyone else you are released to shift if you desire to do so.
My father’s voice boomed through the pack’s mind link. Several shifting back to human form, myself included. Patrol was doubled now that we were closer to the fronts on the battle and we would get less sleep tonight than the night before. We were going to split it in half tonight and half would patrol and half would sleep. Then tomorrow when we wake we will only run for about four hours before we will be at the front of the battle. Right now it was just about ten of then going around.
After a while everyone had ate and Brett and I were on the first patrol for the nights. We were in groups of two for our areas to patrol so naturally Brett and I paired off in our own group. We chatted back and fourth and he talked about missing home already. It was hard to be away from your mate once you had found them. He said they were able to speak through their mind link until about half way through today. At that point they were just too far to speak but he could feel the mate bond pull him towards her. That wouldn’t go away. And if anything happened to him, she would feel it back home too. It was a double edge sword.
Our patrol being four hours long tonight went by very slowly with nothing eventful happening not even a shift in the wind. Finally, we swapped out and we headed to the inner circle of camp for rest. We would sleep in wolf form just in case but the chances of something happening were really unlikely. I scooted all the way up against the rock under the indent and Brett was next to me but not touching me. We nodded at each other and let the exhaustion take over and sleep. I hoped I would dream of back home maybe even Tammy.
The morning sun came and woke us with the heat and light. No dreams for me through out the night. That was fine. We all got up and scattered a little using the bathroom and grabbing something for breakfast. We wouldn’t have long before we left.
Son, would you like to lead us today?
My father’s voice came through to just me this time. I nodded my head but then quickly remembered that he couldn’t see me in the woods.
Yes I would. I will have Brett join me as well if you’re okay with that? I asked him.
That’s fine. We need to gather and leave in a few minutes. We are only about three to four hours away from battle and we have some meeting us just an hour out from battle so that we will be prepared.
Thank you Father. I will be there in just a second. I told him and quickly shut our mind link so I could open one to Brett.
Hey man, I am leading today. I would be honored if you would lead with me? I asked Brett.
I would be honored to. He replied.
Meet me in the middle next to the fire we will leave in a couple minutes. I tell him and cut the link.
Within minutes myself, my father and Brett were all in the middle near the fire.
Today we will be led by our leader of tomorrow. Chad, when you are ready. My father’s voice boomed through the pack link as we all sat close. I let off a howl letting it linger so my pack can join in. And off I went, Brett and my father following me closely as we were only four hours from battle. I was ready to show everyone I was ready to lead not only this group but our whole pack. I would help end this war and bring peace by whatever means were necessary. I felt confident in this and the fact my father was letting me lead today made me feel like somewhere in their he was proud of me even if he didn’t say it.
