Chapter 26 The crown had been buried in a trunk for the better part of 40 years. Korrin’s father had inherited it from his own father, though he’d never used it except in the crowning ceremony all of those years ago, long before Kaven or Korrin were born. Korrin’s grandfather had worn it without question. Korrin’s father had told him it was a sign of “unshaking leadership.” Korrin’s father had laughed at those words whenever he told the story to Korrin. As a child, Korrin had assumed he’d laughed because he hadn’t needed the crown to prove that he was the true leader of the Kingdom. Now, he knew it was because in a way, he wasn’t. The Council had ruled the Kingdom while his father ran it, just like they had ruled the Kingdom during his grandfather’s reign and probably those before him.
