Chapter 12 At the outskirts of the city stood a small, quiet house, almost forgotten by the world. Inside one of its dimly lit rooms lay a young girl on a wide bed. Transparent tubes ran into her body, feeding her fragile system. Her face was badly damaged, her beauty nearly erased by whatever tragedy had befallen her. Beside her, a monitor beeped slowly, each sound a reminder that she was still clinging to life. She was in a coma. An elderly woman stood at her bedside, her expression calm but watchful. A young man stood beside her, his face filled with worry. Mum, when do you think she will wake up, he asked facing the elderly woman. George, calm down, she will wake up soon. the woman replied, her lips curving into a faint, reassuring smile. The woman, Alice, adjusted the drip with practiced hands. Just as she stepped back, a slight movement caught their attention. The girl’s fingers twitched. Mum, look, she’s moving. George said quickly, pointing. Suddenly, the girl’s body jerked violently. Her face twisted in fear as she cried out from her unconscious state. No, no, do not do this, she screamed, her voice trembling as her body shook against the bed. Pass me the syringe, George, Alice said urgently, her calm slipping for the first time. Okay mum he replied, taking the syringe from the tray, handing it over without hesitation. Alice quickly injected the substance into the girl’s arm. Within moments, her struggles began to subside. Her breathing steadied, and the fear slowly drained from her expression. She just had an attack she said without facing any body. You will be fine, Alice murmured, gently stroking her hair. The girl soon fell back into a deep, silent sleep. Alice exhaled slowly, relief washing over her. She faced her son,she will wake up in the next three hours. Lock up the door because she might try to escape, she’s still going through trauma at the moment. And tell the maid to make the food ready, she will be very hungry when she wakes up, she instructed before turning and leaving the room. George lingered for a moment, his eyes fixed on the girl. He stroked her hand gently and whispered, Cassandra Campbell, welcome back to the world, he said quietly before also walking out. --- New York City Two weeks later Kaden and Selene had returned from their trip, but Kaden was no longer the man everyone knew. It’s like he grew even more colder. His parents tried everything to bring back his lively nature, but nothing worked. The parent looked at theirselves and Emily sighed sadly. Days later, Selene sat in Gabrielle’s room. The atmosphere was light as they chatted, trying to distract themselves. The maids soon entered, placing trays of snacks before them. Selene picked up a bite, but before it could reach her mouth, a sudden wave of nausea hit her. She rushed to the bathroom. The sound of vomiting echoed through the room. Gabrielle frowned, rising to her feet. Selene, what is wrong with you, she asked, walking into the bathroom with confusion laced with concern. Selene wiped her mouth, breathing heavily. I don’t know. I have been feeling like this for the past few days. Gabrielle’s expression changed instantly, suspicion replacing concern. And you did not think of going to the hospital. No, there is no need. I am fine. Selene replied Gabrielle crossed her arms, studying her closely. When last did you see your period. The question hit Selene like a blow. Her eyes widened. I was supposed to see it last week. She said picking her phone fast to check her period tracker. She’s 8 days late. Without another word, Gabrielle walked to her drawer and pulled out a pregnancy test strip. She handed it to Selene with a firm look. Go and use it. Selene hesitated, her hands trembling slightly, but she took it and walked into the bathroom. Minutes passed like hours. When she returned, both of them stared at the strip in silence. One line appeared. Then slowly, a second line followed. Selene gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. Gabrielle’s eyes widened in shock. You,,,,you’re Pregnant Selene she said with shock all over her face. Why would you do this, Selene. I trusted you. I believed you would marry my brother, and now you are pregnant for another man. Her voice was sharp, filled with disappointment. Selene shook her head immediately. No,no I’m pregnant with your brother’s child. she said scratching the back of her head. Gabrielle froze. What do you mean? Selene swallowed hard before speaking. It happened during the trip. On the second night, he was drunk. He mistook me for Cassie. I tried to stop him, but he overpowered me. I had no choice but to give in. Since then, he has been apologizing every day. He keeps saying it was a mistake. For a moment, silence filled the room. Then suddenly, Gabrielle’s expression changed. Her shock melted into excitement. It is not a mistake. This is good. This is very good, she said, her voice rising with joy. I love this. I am going to be an aunt. She began pacing around the room, unable to contain her excitement. Selene, however, remained still, smiling a little bit..so she’s expecting a baby she rubbed her tummy slightly. But he does not love me she suddenly said putting on a sad face. Gabrielle stopped and turned to her. And so what. He will love you. You are carrying his child. His first child.that changes everything. Come, we have to go tell mum and dad. Before Selene could protest, Gabrielle grabbed her hand and pulled her out of the room. --- In the sitting room, Mr and Mrs Williams sat with Kaden. Kaden leaned back, his eyes fixed on his phone, his expression unreadable. Kaden, my son, please cheer up and go back to your former self. We need you,The company needs you, Emily said gently. The company is fine without me, mum. and are you not looking at me like this? I’m fine too don’t be dramatic, he replied coldly, without looking up. But…, Emily started. at that moment, Gabrielle entered, pulling Selene along with her. Oh my dear, you are still here, Emily said warmly, smiling at Selene. Yes mum, Selene replied softly. Kaden glanced up. Their eyes met for a brief second. Guilt flickered across his face before he quickly looked away. Gabrielle stepped forward, barely able to hide her excitement. Mum, dad, Kaden, we have good news. Emily smiled. Good news? What is it? Gabrielle took a deep breath, then spoke with a wide grin. Selene is pregnant, and Kaden is responsible. Silence fell over the room. What??they all exclaimed in shock.
