Chapter 1
As I gripped the mop tightly, my knuckles turned a ghostly white, the anger simmering beneath my skin like a pot about to boil over. Maya sauntered past, her muddy shoes leaving a trail of filth on the freshly cleaned floor. My brows furrowed in displeasure, and I felt a familiar knot of frustration twisting in my stomach. Before I could react, a sharp pain shot behind my knees, and I felt my legs give way beneath me. I fell forward, my palms scraping against the cold tile.
A pair of red heels clicked forward, and I felt a crushing weight on my hand. I cried out in pain as my aunt's voice screamed above me. "Ally, why are my floors a mess?" She dug her heels deeper into my palm, and I felt my bones grinding together. I tried to pull my hand free, but she held tight, her grip like a vice.
With a sudden jerk, she grabbed my hair and slapped me across the face. The sting was instant, and my eyes welled up with tears. "Clean this mess up, you bastard," she spat, releasing me with a shove. I landed hard on the floor, the tile cold and unforgiving beneath me.
As I sat there, tears streaming down my face, memories flooded my mind like a tidal wave. I wasn't always treated like this. I remembered the orphanage, the cold walls, and the endless noise. But most of all, I remembered Mr. Neil, a kind benefactor who would visit us regularly. He'd bring gifts, and his smile could light up the entire room.
He'd single me out, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he handed me a special gift. It was always different from what the other kids received, and I felt special, like I was the only one who mattered. And then, one day, he adopted me. I was going to have a real family, a real home.
Everything changed when he fell ill. My aunt, Mrs. Wendy, took over the company, and her demeanor shifted from warmth to ice. Her daughter Maya wasn't much better, and together, they made my life a living nightmare. Six years had passed since I'd seen my father's face, six years since I'd felt loved.
As I lay on my bed later that day, Maya burst in, her eyes flashing with anger. "Why is my room still a mess?" she screamed, slapping me before I could respond. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms as I bit back a retort. "Miss Maya, you said I wasn't permitted to go in your room and you'd get me when you wanted it cleaned," I spoke under my breath, trying to keep my tone neutral.
"Well, I want it cleaned now, and get my dinner ready, b***h," she said, storming out of the room. I watched her go, feeling a familiar sense of resentment burning in my chest.
In the kitchen, I struggled to stand, the aroma of food wafting through the air and making my stomach growl with hunger. But I knew better than to eat with the Stanfords. I'd learned that lesson the hard way.
As I peeked into the living room, I saw my uncle cowering before a massive, muscular man and a calm, collected one. The big guy's voice was like thunder, making the windows rattle. "You have 10 days to tear down that structure and get your people out of our district," the calm man said, his voice dripping with menace.
My uncle nodded, his eyes wide with fear. I wondered what was going on, what structure they were talking about. As I watched, the mysterious man stood, and our eyes met. His piercing blue gaze sent shivers down my spine, and I felt like I'd been punched in the gut.
"Take her too," he said coldly, turning to leave. The bulky man threw me over his shoulder, and I kicked and screamed, but it was futile. I pleaded with my uncle, but he didn't even look at me.
As we left the house, I caught a glimpse of the mysterious man's face. His features were chiseled, his jawline sharp. And those eyes... those eyes seemed to see right through me.
I was thrown into a dark vehicle, and the doors slammed shut behind me. I was trapped, alone and scared. What did they want from me? And what would happen to me now?
The vehicle moved, and I was bounced around the backseat. I tried to calm myself down, to think clearly. But my mind was a jumble of emotions and fears.
As the minutes ticked by, the vehicle finally stopped. I was pulled out, and I stumbled, my legs weak from the ordeal. The mysterious man stood before me, his eyes cold and unyielding
