“What?” I asked with a frown on my face.
“Have you ever truly loved me?” She replied with a question.
“Don’t even start…” I said as my anger began to flare up. “You are the reason I am in a serious mess right now”
I walked forward to meet her. “Your lack of decision is about to cost me a lot more than I expected.” I added.
“You are saying all of this after I caught you in bed with Isabella?” She asked with tears in her eyes. “I am guessing you have moved on from this relationship.” She added.
“I did nothing with Isabella…”
She looked at me with squinted eyes.
“You are lying!” Her voice was loud.
“Isabella was trying to force herself on me. If I did not love you, I would have given into her demands.” I explained.
“So you are saying everything I saw that day wasn’t truly your making?” She asked as her voice softened.
“I will never cheat on you. But I guess I cannot say the same about you” I said with a sigh.
There was a silence between the both of us and I heard her footsteps. She wrapped her arms around my waist, but I pulled away her hand.
“You hurt me Jessica. Being with Darius and especially knowing the type of person he is, you shouldn’t be with him” I whispered in a soft tone.
She planted a kiss on my neck and her hair brushed through my skin. Her scent was alluring and I could remain in this position for a long time.
“I am sorry. The mate bond is too strong and Darius is not ready to reject me” She said calmly.
One part of me wanted to understand.
But thinking that Darius will continue to be part of our life did not sit well with me.
I can only hope that tomorrow will put an end to everything happening between us.
“I have to fight Darius tomorrow” I said to her as we watched the birds fly across the trees singing in harmony.
“But you don’t have your wolf,” She replied.
“I know but I don’t have a choice. My council members want me to fight him.” I explained to her and moved my hand to stroke her hair.
“What are you going to do?” She asked, staring at me with worry on her face.
“An Alpha has to fight for his throne. The council members will question my abilities if I don’t fight”
My mind was made up, tomorrow was the fight and I am going to square up against Darius.

The next day….
Over the night, I could barely sleep.
My mind was occupied with the thoughts of the council members finding out that I cannot shift.
How do I convince these people that I lost my wolf because I saved Jessica?
“Alpha,”
My thought is broken by a familiar voice which caused me to turn around to face him.
“It is time,” Arnon revealed, lowering his head in respect.
I sighed and got up to my feet. There was no need for a sword so I left the sword in the room and followed Arnon out of the room.
As we approached the arena, the crowd was yelling and the earth was shaking because of the number of people that came to watch the battle.
When I entered the arena, there was a loud cheer from the crowd as Arnon introduced me to them.
Darius stood by the corner, his usual smirk not leaving his face.
The urge to slap the smirk out of his face has never been this stronger.
“And now, it is time for both fighters to shift into their wolves” Arnon announced.
Darius wasted no time and shifted.
His black wolf howling loud.
“Alpha, you have to shift.” Arnon informed me.
I sighed and closed my eyes hoping for a miracle to happen.
After a while, the cheers lowered down and I opened my eyes.
Some of the council members were already mumbling amongst themselves.
“Alpha, Darius is ready. Please shift and fight” Arnon mentioned.
I turned to Darius and noticed the look of murder on his face. I sighed and walked forward to meet the council members.
“I cannot shift” I revealed and there was a sudden loud murmuring amongst them.
“Come on Alpha. This must be a joke.” Arnon mentioned chuckling and waving his hand dismissively.
“What is the matter? Is the Alpha scared of fighting me?” Darius asked.
He had shifted back to his human form.
“Or maybe the Alpha cannot shift” He added with a smirk.
“Watch your mouth Darius. Our Alpha has shifted countless times. There is no way you will make such an allegation” Arnon attacked.
“He is right..” I voiced out and there was a loud gasp amongst the council members.
My eyes landed on Jessica and we shared the same sad look.
“No, we have seen you shift.” Arnon shakes his head aggressively.
“I cannot shift anymore Arnon” I said with a broken heart and a sad tone.
Arnon signed and returned back to his seat.
The crowd had become restless. They were waiting for the fight to happen and it was left to me to control them.
I turned to the crowd and cleared my throat.
“Due to some unfortunate incident, this fight has been canceled” I announced.
They began to argue with each other as they all made their way out of the arena.
None of the council members bothered saying a word to me as they also walked out of the arena.
Arnon held a look on his face but I cannot determine what was going on through his mind as he walked out of the room.
“You did your best,” Jessica said as she came over to my side.
“So, you cannot shift huh?” Darius asked as he approached me.
“How strange…” He said mockingly. “Anyways, I certainly hope you know what that means?” He asked and finally walked out of the arena.
“What is he talking about?” Jessica asked.
My heart was beating very fast.
Darius had a point.
There has never been an Alpha without a wolf that ruled a pack.
“The council members…” I voiced out and grabbed her hand before walking out of the arena.
