Xavier's POV
Carson and Emma stood off to to my left as I opened the door to none other then Councilman Erik. His tailored suit, shined shoes, and gruff face gave him an air of arrogance.
"Well good morning Alpha Xavier, I decided that it would be best if I just stopped in to check on things and keep the urgency to our... agreement," he slyly greeted. His voice was low and almost wicked sounding. It is what has given him the votes and the support for his Council chair. No one wanted to know what he was capable of and so no one crossed him to find out. Rumors of cruelty and egotism followed him where ever he went like his own shadow.
"Good Morning Councilman, not a problem at all. Step right in and I'll walk you through to the vault door we found." It took everything I had to not scowl at him and the "innocence" he was attempting to portray. I jestered with my hand for him to walk in and and greet Carson and Emma to my left. This allowed me the ability to use my body to shield the kitchen entrance with my body in a natural way. Hopefully this would help deter the Councilman from overstaying his welcome.
"Ah... and who do we have here Beta Carson?" Stepping into the Foyer the councilman headed immediately for Emma and took her hand putting a light kiss on the top of it as he smiled and continued, "You've found yourself a fine female I see..." His eyes lingered on Emma's body to long causing Carson to growl warning the Councilman.
I shook my head at Carson from behind watching carefully. If Carson attacked or even slightly offended him we would be in big trouble.
Carson gritted his teeth to attempt to stay polite, "Sir, this is my mate, Emma." Although the words were polite Carson's tone was hostile as he did all he could to refrain from attacking the Councilman for looking to long at her.
In our community when a wolf is mated they become off limits and they are to be treated with respect. This is because our wolves are highly protective. Fights often start because an unmated male makes an advance at a mated female. We try to do our best to stay in check but we put our mates on a pedestal and any advance is reason enough for our wolves to get aggressive.
The control Carson was showing was impressive, but he knew what was at stake if the situation escalated.
Carson mindlinked me , "You better get him moving or i am going to show him the door, i don't know how much longer I can keep myself in check."
Looking at Carson I nodded my head as Carson tightened his grip around Emma's waist to again show the Councilman who she belonged to.
"No need for any hostility young Beta, I am merely making an observation." He again smiled and his eye's lingered on the pair. This Councilman was known for splitting up mated pairs to take the females for his own. Or i guess so the rumors stated, but seeing this now it wasn't so hard to believe.
"Councilman, this way please," I walked past him to the bookcase and raised my arm to showcase the door. "We have been slowly making some head way, but as I said I have a family friend coming so help us get through the incantation on the vault. They should be here by end of day today."
He nodded and looked at the door rubbing his chin as he thought. "I can seethe tool marks so clearly you have been attempting to breach it. What measures are in place when you can access it and detain them? We don't need any... incidents with their capture." His tone was again arrogant and he waited with a brow raised at me.
"We have reinforced the perimeter with our warriors to keep things in. There are silver bullets in their guns should Alpha Zane need to be put down, as well as there as silver nets soaked in wolfsbane. We also made arrangements with the expert coming to dampen any magic from Katherine or their daughter as we don't know what her abilities are being a hybrid."
"That all sounds sufficient to me Alpha, just remember to contact me the second you have them in custody. I want to see this repulsive creature myself before we take he to the council." He finished and it took everything I had not to growl at him calling my mate repulsive. I needed to try even harder then Carson being an Alpha wolf. We are the most aggressive and almost obsessively protective of our mates. Without them our bloodline and pack would crumble to nothing.
"Yes sir, of course, I remember your orders."
"Well if there is nothing else here out of interest I suggest me make our way to the kitchen for a drink. I am in need of a beer after the last minute journey here of course." He turned on a dime and headed back to the foyer. He must have noticed me shielding the kitchen. I should have known this wouldn't work. The blood drained from my face as the panic set in. I hoped to hell that Emma's plan would work. I would defend Charlotte with everything I had. If i had to kill the councilman to keep her safe then I would. The problem would then be running from the rest of the council. If found I would face torture and most likely execution for the attack.
The Councilman stopped as he neared the entrance to the kitchen. His attention had been caught by the family pictures on the wall leading up the stairs. At the base was a large family portrait of the three of them happily smiling in front of the fire in the Livingroom.
"This is disgusting, such a promising Alpha that was taken under that filthy witches spell to think she was his mate. Despicable," he spat out his voice laced with the disgust in Alpha Zane.
A warning growl came from the kitchen and it had the Councilman intrigued. I silently prayed to the Moon Goddess that Charlotte could keep her wolf at bay this time. We must have been close enough for her to over hear his comment.
He walked in to see a small framed girl with ripped and bleached clothing washing the floor with a rag on her hands and knees. Charlotte's face was well hidden as she stayed down and crouched, her hair was pulled just so it helped hide her face a little. "It appears as though your maid has an opinion on the matter Alpha, in my pack maids are punished for that kind of outburst."
Charlotte's frame froze in fear. "There's no need for that Councilman Erik, I will deal with her later." I tried to quickly divert his attention away as I moved past him into the kitchen to grab three beers out of the fridge. Popping the tops of the Corona's I handed him his. "Should we have these out on the front porch? It is still cool enough now before the heat becomes to much later in the day." I wanted to get him as far away from Charlotte as possible. I could smell her scent mixed in with the perfume and cleaner and i was worried that he would be able to pick it up as well.
"I think that is an excellent idea Alpha. Lead the way." He finally had what seemed like a genuine smile at the suggestion but still hadn't taken his eyes away from Charlottes figure. She just get scrubbing and slowly made her way towards the back entrance. "Maybe next time your maid can wear less of that stinking perfume, it is so thick I can barely breathe."
"Yes sir of course." My quick reply had him looking at me in wonder but much to my relief he made his way to the front porch and sat down in one of the rocking chairs.
"You know son, it all seems peculiar to me." He pondered taking a chug of his beer, "I wasn't aware that Beta Carson had reported finding his mate."
"Ah well they just found each other a couple days ago sir, with everything going on he must forgotten to do the paperwork." I knew Carson would be sitting just inside the front door to act if this went sideways but he wouldn't be able to hear us. "She is actually a rouge that was living with the humans in the town here."
Hoping my explanation would suffice I took a long drink to keep my hands busy,
"As long as you and the Beta remain focused on the task at hand I see no reason for any Council intervention here. Should there be any further delays or noted distraction I will have to take it upon myself to lead your team Alpha." He took the last swallow of beer and began to rise.
Following his lead i rose and stuck my hand out to shake his hand. "Always a pleasure Councilman," he shook my hand but squeezed a little to hard almost trying to be dominant over me. I polity smiled back and squeezed harder until his arrogant smile faltered in pain just slightly. Releasing his hand I grinned.
"Until next time Councilman Erik, travel safe."
He began silently flexing his hand beside him as he turned abruptly to leave.
"Next week, Alpha, I expect positive news." With that he retreated into the back of his SUV and the driver began to pull away.
Letting out a breathe I went in to the house to find my poor mate silently crying into Emma's arms on the kitchen floor. All this tension and secrecy was going to eat her alive if I wasn't careful. I needed to find a way to keep her safe and still create some sort of normalcy for her. she needed to be stronger then ever right now and I knew it wasn't me she needed to do that... it was her parents. We needed to find them without the council finding out.
