Chapter 19: The Missing File

Alexander stared at the message on his phone.

Rose stood beside him.

“Are you going to open the file?” she asked.

Alexander looked at her.

“Yes.”

Rose nodded.

“Then I'm coming with you.”

He wanted to argue, but he knew she wouldn't change her mind.

“Stay close to me.”

“I will.”

They arrived at the storage building shortly before midnight.

The building was old and quiet.

Alexander unlocked the door.

Rose followed him inside.

“Where is the file?” she whispered.

“My lawyer said it should be in the back room.”

They walked through several rows of boxes.

Finally, Alexander stopped.

“There.”

A dusty box sat on a shelf.

He pulled it down.

A label was written across the top:

KING FAMILY — CONFIDENTIAL

Rose looked at it.

“That's it.”

Alexander opened the box.

Inside were old documents, photographs, and letters.

Then Rose saw something that made her stop.

A photograph of her father.

She picked it up.

“He looks so young.”

Alexander looked at the photograph.

“He was working with my father at the time.”

Rose turned it over.

There was a date written on the back.

Three years ago.

Then she noticed another photograph beneath it.

Her eyes widened.

“Alexander.”

He looked over.

The second photograph showed her father standing beside Daniel.

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Daniel.”

Rose stared at the picture.

“They knew each other.”

“Yes.”

“But Daniel said he worked for your company.”

“He did.”

Rose picked up another document.

“This is a letter.”

Alexander took it.

The letter was from Rose's father.

He read it silently.

Then he stopped.

“What?”

Alexander handed it to her.

Rose read the first few lines.

Her hands began to tremble.

The letter explained that her father had discovered someone was using the company to move money secretly.

He had planned to expose the person responsible.

But before he could do so, he disappeared.

Rose looked up.

“So that's what happened.”

Alexander nodded.

Then he noticed something at the bottom of the letter.

A name.

He stared at it.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

Alexander pointed to the signature.

Rose looked down.

The name belonged to someone she knew.

Someone they had both trusted.

Rose's face went pale.

“No…”

A sound suddenly came from outside the room.

They both turned.

The door slowly moved.

Alexander stepped in front of Rose.

“Who's there?”

No answer.

He moved toward the doorway.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID showed Daniel.

Alexander answered.

“Where are you?”

Daniel's voice was urgent.

“You found the file, didn't you?”

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

“How do you know?”

“Because I was the one who hid it.”

Rose stepped closer.

“Why?”

Daniel paused.

“Because your father asked me to.”

Rose froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Daniel continued.

“He knew he was being watched. He wanted the truth hidden until the right person found it.”

Alexander tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who was watching him?”

Daniel was silent.

Then he said,

“Your father knew.”

Alexander's face changed.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

The call suddenly ended.

Rose looked at Alexander.

“Your father knew my father was in danger?”

Alexander stared at the phone.

He didn't know what to believe anymore.

Then Rose looked back at the documents.

One page was missing from the file.

And across the empty space, someone had written:

“The missing page is in the wedding contract.”

Rose and Alexander looked at each other.

And now they had to find it before someone else did.
