Zara's heart pounded wildly in her chest as she stood at the starting line, feeling the weight of the entire pack’s expectations pressing down on her. She could practically hear their whispers, feel their stares, all wishing for her failure.
"Pathetic," Tom sneered from the sidelines, running a hand through his hair. "Just a few minutes into the contest, and she’s already done for."
Zara staggered to a corner and collapsed, vomiting violently. Her stomach twisted in agony. What’s happening to me? she thought, desperately trying to calm her racing heart. Why am I so weak?
Summoning every ounce of willpower she had left, she pushed herself to her feet, ignoring the nausea threatening to overtake her. She had to keep going.
She began running, her legs feeling like lead, but each step took everything she had. Her vision blurred as her strength failed her. Why am I like this? she wondered, tears burning her eyes. I trained so hard for this. Why does it feel like I'm crumbling?
The mountain loomed ahead, and she forced herself to climb, each step slower than the last. Her boots scraped against the earth, but compared to the other contestants, she was moving like a snail.
Breathing heavily, she paused for a moment to gather her strength. Sweat poured down her forehead. I can’t keep going at this pace. I’ll never catch up.
She looked around, desperate for a solution. I’ll wait for the deer to come my way. Maybe that’s my only chance.
Just then, the whistle blew, signaling the next phase.
Zara let out a heavy sigh, frustration mixing with the deep ache in her chest. I’m weak. I’m nothing but a burden. She turned and trudged back to the compound, her arms covering her face.
Laughter echoed in the distance, cutting through the silence like a knife.
"Here comes our soon-to-be Luna," someone shouted mockingly. The crowd roared with laughter.
Tom stood in the shadows, his face hidden. He spoke low to Sonia. “I thought maybe she’d surprise me, show some strength... but look at her. She’s a disappointment.”
Sonia snorted. “What did you expect? An omega can never be anything but inferior. You’re the fool for believing she’d be anything else.”
Zara felt a fire building within her, but it was quickly replaced by a growing sense of dread. The weakness in her body wasn’t normal. She knew something was wrong, and the symptoms were too familiar. Silver dust? Could it be that I’ve been poisoned? A chill ran down her spine.
As if on cue, the announcer’s voice rang out again.
“The Gauntlet of Strength is the next challenge. You must carry a bag of rocks up to the mountain. No shifting allowed,” the elder announced.
Zara felt a surge of determination, but it was short-lived. With her last remaining strength, she hoisted the bag and began her ascent, but after a few steps, her footing faltered, and she collapsed onto the hard stone, her head striking the ground with a sickening thud.
The world around her faded to black.
When Zara regained consciousness, she found herself lying at the edge of the track, James kneeling beside her. The mockery of the crowd still echoed in her ears.
"Don’t listen to them," James said softly, helping her sit up. "You didn’t deserve this."
But Zara felt the weight of her failure crushing her chest. She couldn't find the words.
The contest ended in a blur. Tom approached the center stage, his eyes cold and unforgiving. The crowd fell silent as he began to speak.
“As you can all see, Zara has failed. She’s nothing but a curse on this pack, and I won’t let her endanger us any longer. Our Alpha died because of her,” Tom’s voice was cold, final. “Zara Starfell, I reject you as my mate. By my will, I sever the bond between us. You are banished from this pack.”
Zara’s heart shattered, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Please tell me this is a nightmare, she thought, her body trembling.
James helped her to her cabin, his expression hardening as the cruel laughter of the pack followed them. “I’m sorry, Zara. There’s nothing more I can do for you. I wish there was,” he said quietly.
She didn’t respond, too numb to speak. She gathered her few belongings, the weight of her rejection heavy in the pit of her stomach.
"Where will you go?" James asked, his voice soft. "Do you know anyone outside Shadowmoor?"
Zara looked up at him, her eyes filled with uncertainty. "I’ve spent my whole life here. I’m lost. I have no one."
“My father has a cabin not far from here,” James offered. “No one stays there. You can go there, if you want. It’s the least I can do.”
Zara hesitated, but the thought of being alone was unbearable. "I don’t want to be a burden to you," she said quietly. "I’ll figure something out."
"No," James insisted, his voice firm. "You can stay as long as you need. Don’t argue."
Zara gave a reluctant nod. "Alright, but only for a few days. I need to think."
James nodded. "You can stay as long as you want, Zara. You have nowhere else to go, remember?"
Zara’s body felt like lead as she made her way to a nearby herbal shop, hoping to find the ingredients for an antidote to the silver dust. As she searched the shelves, she caught sight of Sonia from a distance.
She turned quickly, avoiding the woman’s gaze.
Sonia approached her, tapping her lightly on the back.
Zara stiffened, but didn’t respond. She continued searching for the herbs she needed, trying to ignore Sonia. But the woman’s voice broke through the silence.
“I know you hate me right now,” Sonia said, her tone mocking. “But life’s not fair. The strong always win, and the weak get left behind.”
Zara’s face drained of color, her fists clenching at her sides. "Oh really?" she shot back.
Sonia smiled smugly. “Tom loves me. He always has. I’m doing you a favor, saving you from a failed marriage.”
Zara's eyes darkened, her teeth gritting. "You think I’m weak? You think I can’t lead?"
Sonia laughed, the sound cold and dismissive. "You’ll never be your father, Zara. You’re nothing compared to him."
Sonia held up a small bag, shaking it teasingly. "Looking for this? I hear elderberry’s in short supply these days."
Zara’s stomach twisted. “How do you know I need that? Did you have something to do with what’s happening to me?”
Before Sonia could respond, a loud growl rang out from the street. A massive werewolf crashed through the window, tackling Sonia to the ground.
“Who are you?” Sonia screamed in agony, claws sinking into her.
