The alpha’s howl echoed through the air, summoning his pack members to defend against the attack. The Iron Claw pack had arrived with full force.
Sonia writhed beneath the weight of the enemy werewolf, her breath coming in desperate gasps as its claws dug deeper into her flesh. "Help me, Zara!" she cried out in agony, her voice strained.
Zara, still weak from the silver dust, could barely move. Panic gripped her as she scanned the room, searching for anything that could help her fight back. Her eyes landed on a vase, and in a flash of desperation, she hurled it to the ground.
The wolf paused, its attention shifting momentarily to the noise. Sonia seized the opportunity, pushing with all her strength. The werewolf staggered, falling toward Zara, but before it could regain its balance, Sonia had already shifted and bolted for safety, leaving Zara behind.
Zara stood frozen, her body trembling, the poison still wreaking havoc on her. Her hands shook uncontrollably, and her heart raced. The wolf, enraged, let out a low growl, staring at Zara for a long moment. She couldn’t bring herself to meet its eyes, lowering her gaze in fear.
Suddenly, a howl pierced the air—a retreat. The wolf snarled once more, then turned and bounded away without striking Zara. Her chest heaved with relief, but confusion filled her. “Who... who could it be?” she whispered, a chill running down her spine.
As the chaos subsided, Zara bent down and picked up the elderberry Sonia had dropped. She forced her legs to move, stumbling toward the door, her body betraying her every step.
Outside, the battlefield had quieted. The Iron Claw pack had made their impact and left, leaving Shadowmoor’s pack in disarray.
Zara walked for hours through the wilderness, her heart heavy with sadness. She could barely make out the cabin’s location from the vague directions James had given her. When she reached a T-junction she recognized, she paused, staring down the desolate path. No one passed by; the route was rarely used.
Time dragged on, and she stood motionless, hoping for some sign. Just as she thought she’d be stranded, a truck appeared in the distance. She waved frantically, and to her surprise, it slowed and stopped.
The stranger, seeing her distress, offered to drive her to the cabin, as he lived nearby. By evening, Zara arrived at James’s father’s cabin, the old structure seeming even more decrepit than she imagined. Cobwebs clung to the corners, and dust covered the furniture, but Zara barely noticed. Her mind was elsewhere, focused on one goal.
She spotted a rickety table and cleared it hastily, setting out the materials she had gathered. The task at hand was urgent. She needed an antidote to the poison, and fast.
First, she crushed elderwood bark and elderwood berries in a bowl, mixing them for several minutes. “I hope I grabbed stabilizing herbs,” she muttered, rummaging through her bag. Her hand brushed against something soft and she smiled in relief as she pulled out the lavender she’d almost missed.
She added the lavender to the mixture, stirring it as the smell of the herbs filled the air. With the ingredients combined, she moved to the small fireplace in the corner. After several tries, a flame ignited. She placed the mixture in a kettle and set it to boil.
Minutes passed, and Zara watched the concoction with patience. Once the liquid had thickened, she added a few drops of wolf’s bane oil, a pinch of sage, and two teaspoons of honey, stirring it all together.
Finally, she poured the liquid into a cup and, after waiting for it to cool slightly, drank it down in one go.
Instantly, her vision blurred, and a wave of dizziness swept over her. Her body grew heavy, and her bones felt as though they were turning to stone. She stumbled toward a cushion and collapsed, her back sinking into the soft foam. The room spun around her as she lay there, overwhelmed by the sensations. Her mind drifted into thought.
"How did things go so wrong?" she wondered. "Why did everyone turn against me, except James?"
Her thoughts turned dark as she remembered Sonia. “How long has she been planning this? Could she have been behind it all along?” Zara’s mind raced with possibilities. "Am I really cursed? The Seer never lies... but could Sonia and her mother have orchestrated all this together?"
Zara felt the sting of betrayal deep in her chest. “I never trusted the Seer, not like my father did. Maybe he had a reason to stay away from her." Her thoughts were a tangled mess, circling around the same questions, the same confusion.
Then, she thought about her bond with Tom. Her rejection still stung. "The worst thing that can happen to a wolf... the pain of losing your fated mate," she thought, the hurt making her eyes sting with unshed tears. "Will I ever recover from this?"
The soft, sudden knock on the door startled her out of her thoughts. She jumped up, heart racing, and grabbed a metal rod from the corner, her instincts kicking in. “Who’s there?” she called out, her voice low and dangerous.
When there was no immediate answer, her anxiety spiked. She edged closer to the door, gripping the rod tighter.
“Zara, it’s me,” a familiar voice called from the other side.
Relief flooded her, but doubt still lingered. “Who’s me?”
A quiet chuckle on the other side followed. “It’s James. I’m the only one who knows where you are, remember? I just came to check on you.”
She hesitated for a moment before responding, her voice still tense. “Do you have a name?”
“Come on, Zara. It’s me—James. I’m your cousin, and I’m the only one who came to make sure you’re safe.”
Zara relaxed slightly but remained cautious. “Are you sure you weren’t followed? I’ve been branded a killer. I have to be careful who I trust.”
“Zara, I’m not followed,” James assured her. “And you’re not a killer. We both know that.”
Zara let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. “Yeah, we do, but Tom doesn’t... Sonia doesn’t... The whole pack thinks I’m cursed.”
She rolled her eyes and scoffed. “I’m just supposed to accept this?”
James took a deep breath. “I don’t have all the answers, Zara. But we need to figure out what comes next.”
“What comes next?” she repeated, a bitter laugh escaping her. “I was banished from my own pack, James. What do you think comes next?”
“You’re my cousin. I can’t just leave you out here.” His voice softened. “We were attacked by Iron Claw pack right after you left. I was worried because I didn’t see you around afterward.”
Zara smiled faintly, a sad ache in her chest. “At least someone cares about me.”
“I always care about you, Zara. You’re my little cousin.”
She let out a humorless laugh. “Then tell me this, James—how did the Iron Claw pack go from being allies to enemies? Why did they attack us? It doesn’t make sense.”
James exhaled shakily, his expression darkening. “I don’t know the full story. I was just a kid when your father ruled, but I remember... your father was a great leader. Peace reigned during his time. People thought he was weak for choosing alliances over territory, but that was just who he was.”
Zara pressed on, her brow furrowed. “Does this war have anything to do with my father’s death?”
James hesitated, his jaw tightening. “I... I don’t think so.”
“You don’t think so? Or you don’t know?” she challenged.
He ran a hand through his hair. “I was young back then, Zara. The details are blurry.”
Her eyes narrowed, suspicion creeping into her voice. “What aren’t you telling me, James? No one will tell me what really happened to my father. I need answers. All I have are questions.”
James looked pained. “I understand, Zara. But for now, you need to focus on getting out of this situation. You can’t stay out here forever.”
Zara sighed, running a hand through her hair. “You’re right. First, I need to rid myself of this poison. Everything else can wait.”
“Poison?” James echoed, his voice laced with concern. “Who did this to you, Zara? I’ll get to the bottom of it, I promise.”
“I suspect Sonia,” Zara said, her tone bitter.
James raised an eyebrow. “Why Sonia?”
“I was with her when Iron Claw attacked,” Zara explained, her voice low. “She gave me the elderwood portion I needed to treat the silver dust, but something wasn’t right. She always seemed to be a step ahead.”
He stared at her, processing the information. “That’s... suspicious. Do you have any proof?”
Zara nodded, determination flashing in her eyes. “Before the attack, Sonia brought me the elderwood portion I’d been searching for. She knew exactly where to find it.”
James swallowed hard, his gaze intense. “That’s definitely suspicious...”
