The Beginning
Prologue
Today was the day. Today was Simeon Sanders thirteenth birthday. Tonight he would get his wolf and finally be able to turn. Simeon had heard the stories from both his mother and father about the nights they had meant their wolves.
Simeon spent most of the day helping his father with pack business. Most were problems with the amount of harvest that had been collected this year. Most years their land supplied enough for them to eat and to also sell at the local farmers market. This year is seemed that the harvest had not been as good. Many voiced that the Moon Goddess was displeased with them.
As day turned to night, Simeons father told him to return to the house and his mother. She was at home preparing the basement for him to transition in.
AS soon as Simeon arrived home, his mother was waiting for him.
“Simeon,” She said, “Tonight is not only the night when your wolf will come to you, but also a full moon. Tonight the Goddess answers the wishes of any that pay to her and that she finds worthy. IF you pray for anything while you transition she may answer. You need to be careful tonight. DO you understand?”
“Yes, mom, I do,” Simeon said.
“Good,” his mother said with a nod. “I’ll take you to the basement now. Remember that you will be alone until morning.”
“Yes, mom,” Simeon said.
His mother smiled and led him to the basement. With a hug and a smile she opened the basemet door for him. The second it was closed, she locked it from the outside. In the morning she would be back to unlock it.
Inside the basement, Simeon went down the stairs. At the bottom he found that the walls had been padded and the floor and a soft rug on it. He went and sat on the rug and thought about all that he would do until his transition started. He decided to meditate as his father had taught him.
Hours past and soon the moon shown through the window and hit on the spot he sat in. He looked up as the pain began. As the pain began he knew that the Moon Goddess would be listening to him.
“Moon Goddess,” Simeon prayed, “I know I have no right to ask you, but I hope that you can help my pack. Harvest has not been good this year and I fear that we won’t have enough to survive the winter.”
Suddenly, a light filled the room and a woman appeared. She knelt next to Simeon and his pain stopped.
“Simeon, I heard you praying to me,” She said. “What would you do to see that your pack survived not only this winter, but forever?”
Simeon stared at the woman for a second before he realized that the Moon Goddess knelt beside him.
“I would do anything,” he said.
“Even expect a female wolf as your wolf half?” the goddess asked him.
“If that is want to want,” Simeon said.
The goddess smiled at him. “It is what is want,” she said. “It won’t be forever though. I need your male wolf to help me with something important. The wolf I give you, Lila, is not forever. She has already agreed to stay with you until your male wolf can be with you. I don’t do this to punish you, Simeon. I want you to understand that.”
Simeon looked at the Goddess before he nodded. “I understand, Goddess. May I know what his name is?”
“You may,” She said, with a smile. “But before I tell you how about you transform into Lila? She would like you to see her and so that she may start communicating to you.
Simeon nodded and with the Goddess watching transformed into Lila.
Lila was a small red wolf. As the goddess held up a mirror so both Lila and Simeon could see what they looked like she smiled again.
“Simeon and Lila, I want you both to take care of each other,” she said. “I know what it will be hard on you both. Just remember that this is not forever. When the time comes Heath will let you both know. I love you both.”
With another smile, the Moon Goddess vanished.
In the morning, Simeons mother unlocked the basement door and went door with his father. When they saw the small red wolf they smiled.
“Simeon,” his mother called.
The wolf looked up and felt happy as she saw Simeons parents standing there. Simeon still slept in her mind and she was happy for that.
“Hello, Simeons parents,” she told them.
His parents shock was visible as they looked at her.
“Who are you?” his father demanded to know.
“I am Lila,” she said. She bowed her head before looking up again. “Last night Simeon prayed to the Goddess and she answered his pray.”
“What?” his mother asked. “Why would he do that? I told him not to.”
“Simeon wants to see his pack happy,” Lila said. “The Moon Goddess also needed his wolf for an important task. When the time is right, he will return to Simeon.”
“What will others think?” Simeons mother asked his father.
Simeons father looked at Lila for moment. He was not going to question the Goddess.
“Lila, will you do anything to protect Simeon?” he asked.
“Of course, Sir,” Lila said.
“Would you agree to turn into a wolf only if Simeon was sin trouble as well as only on his birthday?” he asked.
Lila looked at Simeons father for a few moments. She knew he was only asking to protect Simeon.
With a nod she said, “Yes.”
