"How do you do this?" Sophia asked as she put the saddle on a spotted brown and white horse.
Elijah watched her struggle and let out a laugh. He had almost forgotten how she was from a different time. She didn't seem to care to blend in and he liked that. "You put it on wrong to begin with." Elijah said as he walked over to her and fixed the saddle, "you put it on backward."
There was no way to hide the blush on her face. He was so handsome and he was touching her hands. Sophia's heart was going wild in her chest. "Thanks." Sophia said looking right into his green eyes. He looked back into her eyes and for a second they shared a connection, something special, something that Sophia had never felt before. It was like for that second they were supposed to be there together and nothing else mattered.
"Uh, you are very welcome." He said after the moment had passed and quickly looked away from Sophia to the stable dirt ground. He dropped his hands to his sides and took a step back. He was getting such strong feelings for this girl that he barely knew. He wondered if she felt the same for him.
"Well, let us get going, shall we?" Elizabeth asked, not noticing that she helped break up their moment. She got on one of the horses and fixed her dress.
With Elijah's help, Sophia was able to get onto the horse. She felt the horse underneath her move and it scared her. She wasn't sure if she was of a fan of something so strong and powerful beneath her. She quickly grabbed a hold of the rains to steady herself. This was going to be a long ride. She was white knuckling the rope so strongly that it was starting to leave marks into her palms.
Elizabeth saw the distress on Sophia's face as she gripped onto the horse. She rode up to them calmly so she could talk more easily to her. "Calm down Sophia. The horse can sense your fear." Elizabeth said.
Sophia frowned but didn't say anything back. Instead, she took a deep breath in and let it out. She needed to calm down. She knew that she could do just that. Besides, how hard could riding a horse be? She looked over at Elijah and Elizabeth who were calmly sitting on their horses. She knew that if they can do that, then she could too. In a minute the horse calmed down and Sophia started to feel comfortable on it. Elizabeth led the group down a hill and with a little struggle, Sophia was able to follow. "So where are we going?" Sophia asked as the castle got father and father out of sight.
"We're just going to go. We don't know where, we just go." Elijah said as took the place as a leader and led the girls on horseback. Elijah loved horses. To him, people were always lying, judging, and hurting each other, but horses never did that. They were easier to deal with than people. They understood him better than most people ever did anyhow.
Once they got to the bottom of the valley Sophia was taken back. In her time this area was filled with shops and a gas station, but here, it was just nature. The grass was bright green and there were flowers springing up from everywhere. It was so peaceful. "This is amazing." Sophia said looking around her at nothing in particular.
"It is just land." Elizabeth said and let out a laugh. Elizabeth was still amazed at what Sophia said some times. She paid attention to the simplest of things.
"It's magical. You know that, well, of course, you don't think so, it's your time. But, I never thought that going back in time was possible." Sophia said and took a deep breath smelling the fresh grass. Never in her life did she think she could be able to get a chance to do this, but here she was.
The two of them knew Victoria as she time traveled often to see Elizabeth's parents but they never had a connection to her. But Sophia was different. Victoria always seemed so cinicle and she never talked to the youth, she always seemed too busy with the adults. But Sophia only wanted to spend time with the youth. Elijah and Elizabeth both looked at Sophia then smiled, "you are so different Sophia." Elizabeth said.
"That is not always a bad thing." Sophia shrugged at them.
As soon as she said that a large gust of wind came through the valley and scared the horses. The horses started to buck and snort. Some scared them that the three humans couldn't see or feel.
"Woa, woa." Elijah said and tried to calm them. He frowned, this was not normal for the horses. He knew something was happening and it wasn't going to be good. He knew it was too late to run so braced himself for what was going to happen next.
"What's going on?" Sophia begged, panic in her voice. She was just starting to get the hang of the horse, now this happened. She wasn't sure if she ever wanted to ride again after this. Now it made sense why her father didn't like them.
"I'm not sure." Elizabeth said with worry in her voice. She had a guess of what was going to happen next. She had only heard stories of spells being casted as soon as people left the protection guard of their houses. She didn't think it would happen to them because it had never happened to them before. A clap of thunder sounded even though a second ago, it was a perfectly sunny day.
"Sophia. We. Need. To. Talk." The sky said with a rumble.
"Do you hear that?" Sophia asked with fear in her voice. She had no idea what was going on but she was terrified. She was worried that she did something wrong or messed something up. She knew she shouldn't have come back. She was now messing up time as she knew it.
"Yes." Elizabeth frowned. She wasn't strong enough to stop what was going to happen. She barely could cast a simple spell let alone stop Lord Nelson. She couldn't protect Sophia and that scared her the most. She knew that he would take her just like he did her sister if he had a chance. "Don't do it Sophia." Elizabeth yelled over the sound of the wind and thunder.
At that moment the horse bucked Sophia off of it and she hit the ground with a loud thump. She felt pain run through her body and she refused to move for a second as she regained herself.
"But.." Sophia said and got up from the ground slowly. For some reason this freak storm seemed to call to her, she felt a magnetism to it.
She took a step forward and then all of a sudden she was alone in a sea of waves green grass like in her dream. The freak storm was gone and once again it was a sunny day. She looked around herself and saw that Elizabeth and Elijah were nowhere to be seen. "What do you want from me?" Sophia yelled to the land knowing the man from her dream must be here.
"I want you." A man said behind her. She turned herself as fast as she could to get a look at this man with short blonde hair and eclectic blue eyes.
Lord nelson was the man from her dreams, it always had been. "You." Sophia managed to choke out as her whole body stiffened in fear. She was terrified being here with him because this wasn't a dream, this was real and there was no way she could wake up from this.
"Yes, nice to finally meet you too love." He said with a charming British accent.
"Who are you?" Although Sophia already knew the answer to this. She just wanted to hear it from him.
"I'm Lord Nelson." He said and bowed in front of her. He was still pleasantly surprised that it was this easy to get a hold of her. If the family wasn't careful, she would turn into his hands just as easily as the sister.
She widened her eyes and she pieced together the information in her mind. This was who everyone was afraid of. He was standing right in front of her and she knew she couldn't defend herself. "I know who you are." Sophia said and took a couple steps back from him. He took Elizabeth's sister, he was called evil. From what she could tell, he didn't look evil, he looked like a gentleman but something deep in Sophia said to run and run fast away from him. Her body told her to get away and never look back.
Lord Nelson watched as she turned on her heels and started to run from him. If only she knew that she couldn't run from this spell. "Oh Love, where are you going. I just met you. Don't you know that's rude?" He said and flicked his hand to the side which made Sophia fly across the field and land on the ground hard. She felt something in her chest snap and let out a cry of pain.
She carefully got up from the ground and looked right at him, each breath she took burned her chest. "You got to be serious," Sophia mumbled. She felt a fire of hate burning stronger by the second for him. If he thought that little spell would stop her, he was wrong, she had two brothers that beat her up all the time, she was tougher than that.
In a flash, he was standing in front of her and a smiled came to his face, "you are tough. Victoria said you were but I didn't believe it. I have gotten too used to these 'lady's' in this time. My, my it is a boring time this is." He said calmly and moved his hand in an upward motion to bring Sophia up from the ground so the tips of her toes were barely touching the ground.
Sophia struggled to get back down but soon realized that struggling was useless. He had some kind of spell that was holding her in place and she didn't know how to break it. "What do you want?" Sophia said staring at him, fear clear in her eyes.
"I told you, I want you. However, sadly I cannot get you because of the special protection spell over that castle and you for that matter. So let's make a deal, you for Elizabeth's sister? Yes, that does sound fair to me." He knew that Elizabeth's family and Victoria would put some kind of protection on Sophia but he didn't think it would this powerful. He felt his grip on her start to slip. His time was almost up.
Sophia felt her feet touch the ground again. She knew that his strength was wavering. He wasn't going to take her, not now. "Why do you want me?"
"Because you're a guarder and you can bring back my brother from your time. Your grandmother and Abraham did a good job to prevent me from getting him, but you can get him." He said and smiled kindly at her.
She shook her head at him. "I would never help you." Sophia spat, totally disgusted with him.
"Oh you don't have a choice love." He said and smiled evilly then ran through her as if a ghost would in the movies.
As soon as he did that Sophia dropped to her knees. It felt like she got the wind knocked out of her and for a second she couldn't breathe. She suddenly was freezing cold. She knew that he did something to her, she felt different. "What did you do?" she asked, her voice shaking.
"You have two days to make up your mind on what you want to do." He said.
"Or what? What are you going to do? kill me? Please, I know you want me so you won't kill me." Sophia said and got up from the ground finding more confidence even though her legs shook beneath her weight.
He nodded at her. She was smarter than he thought she would be. "No, you're right. you are a bright girl. I can't do that. But how about if I kill Elizabeth's older sister." He said and disappeared into nothing.
"Wait!" Sophia yelled and then all of a sudden she was in front of Elizabeth and Elijah. Sophia looked up around her to see that the freak storm had disappeared and the sun was shining again.
Relief filled Elizabeth as she saw Sophia standing in front of them again. Lord Nelson must have talked to her. Elizabeth needed to know what he said to her. He hadn't talked to them since he took her sister, now he was making his move. "Sophia!" Elizabeth said and jumped off her horse and ran to her. "What did he say to you?"
Sophia suddenly felt sick to her stomach. She was sure she was going to be sick. "He said I have two days to make up my mind. He wants me for your sister or she dies." Sophia said and dropped to her knees, unable to hold her weight any longer.
Elijah saw that she was struggling. He did not waste any time to help her. He jumped off his horse and put his hands around Sophia. He scooped her up into his arms when he realized that she was cold to the touch. He had seen this before, Lord Nelson put a spell in her, he was sure of it. "Come, we have to get her back. Elizabeth, give me a hand." Elijah shouted to her.
The two of them helped Sophia up onto his horse and then he jumped onto the horse to hold onto her. "Just hang on to me." he whispered to her.
"Ok." Sophia said still in a daze as she hugged Elijah.
In no time at all, they were back at the castle stable. "I'll get Abraham!" Elizabeth said and jumped off her horse and started to sprint into the castle.
Elijah got off the horse then helped Sophia down as well. He looked into her bloodshot eyes and saw that she was about to faint. She was pale white and her face was covered in a sweat. He didn't want to ask her any questions while she was in this state but he knew he had to take this moment before he ran out of time, "what else did he say to you?" He asked a little too fiercely to her.
"He-he..." Sophia stumbled. Her mind wasn't working as fast it normally did.
"Sophia, think. "He said kinder this time. If she took any more time he would miss his chance.
"He said that his brother is in my time and he wants him back." Sophia said as her words slurred.
He shook his head at her. "That's a lie, he's lying to you. He doesn't have a brother." Elijah said. He swore under his breath, he was sure that Nelson told her something else.
"How do you know that?" Sophia asked staring at Elijah with wide eyes. Sophia didn't understand how Elijah knew that. She crumpled to her knees then lost all her food that she had eaten last night over the stable floor.
Abraham came running into the stable just in time to see Sophia vomit. "Sophia, I knew I shouldn't have let you go. You don't know enough to go on your own out of this castle." Abraham said as he came running over to her with Elizabeth trailing behind him.
Before anyone else could react Sophia fainted on the dirt ground, unable to keep her eyes open any longer.
Elijah ran to her side and quickly picked her up into his arms, not wanting her to touch the ground for longer than she had too. He looked down at her with a frown. It was his fault that all of this was happening. He quickly brushed her hair out of her face and then looked at Abraham.
"I want to know exactly what happened." Abraham said to both Elizabeth and Elijah with a strict tone. He knew that protection spell should have kept them safe but yet they were in this mess. He wanted to scold them but he looked at Sophia and knew that he didn't have that kind of time. "But first, come, we need to help her." Abraham was failing at his job and he couldn't help it.
They took her into the castle and laid her in the closest love seat that they found. Abraham rubbed his hands together and felt electricity go through them. He looked at Sophia as he tried to remember the spell he needed. He had seen this spell before, it would be easy to fix it if he only remembered.
Elijah frowned at Abraham. For the past few months, he noticed Abraham more distant than normal but now was not the time to be distant. They all needed him. Elijah could feel something coming and he knew that they would need Abraham's help. "Tetalone. I think that's the spell you need." Elijah said as he realized that Abraham was having a hard time remembering the right spell.
Abraham looked at Elijah and nodded. Elijah was right, he often was with these kind of spells. For his young age Elijah had spent a long time studding spells and druid history. Abraham put his hands on Sophia and mumbled some words that neither Elizabeth nor Elijah could hear. He chanted over and over again until his hands lit up and suddenly Sophia opened her eyes and gasped.
"I have to do something!" Sophia gasped as she shot up in the seat. She felt like she just woke up from a terrible nightmare that left her confused and scared.
Elijah was by her in a second. He lightly pushed her back, resting into the seat. After a spell like that, he knew what kind of drain it was on the body. "Calm down. Everything is fine." He hushed her softly.
They sat beside her and let Sophia retell her moment's with Lord Nelson. After Sophia told them all that she remembered, Abraham said, "the nerve he has. Who does he think he is? I'll need time to think this out. One thing is for sure, Lord Nelson always keeps his word. But we can't give him what he wants. That is not logical."
"That's not fair to Elizabeth's sister though! She could die and it's all my fault!" Sophia raised her voice at Abraham. She couldn't even bare to look at Elizabeth. She had the fate of Elizabeth's older sister's life in her hands and Abraham was saying forget about her. If she were Elizabeth, she would be in tears, hating Sophia. Sophia couldn't even bear the thought of losing Eloise.
Abraham shrugged, although this was a hard thought to think about, Sophia needed to understand. "You have the power to time travel, she does not. She's expendable to him, you are not." Abraham knew that he couldn't explain his thoughts fully. The world they lived in was way too confusing for Sophia to fully understand. If Sophia knew all of what was at stake, she would be acting more logically. He started to understand that this was why her grandmother did not want her knowing about any of this.
"So you're going to put me in front of Elizabeth's sister just because of that?!" Sophia said, practically yelling at him.
He frowned at her. "Yes Sophia I am! I do not want to do it but I have to! You don't think this is killing me too?! I cannot bare the thought of losing her! But I have too because I have to look ahead to the future. You have to protect it and time. She doesn't have that power." He said raising his voice back the Sophia.
Sophia shrunk back into the chair, not expecting such force from Abraham. She was quiet for a minute as she tried to figure out what she was going to do next. "Well then I want to go home! I'm done with this!" She said finally and stood up. She wavered a little, almost falling back into her chair because of the dizziness she felt but reminded on her feet.
"I don't think you can go home. When he went through you, I think he could have locked you from the book per say." Abraham said. When he did the healing spell he could tell that Nelson connected two spells into one but he wasn't sure what the other spell was.
"You mean I can't go back home." Sophia said in shock. She took a seat again. She couldn't believe her ears. This was becoming a nightmare that she wanted to wake up from. She thought she was just going to have some fun today and get some questions answered. She was fast discovering that this world was more dangerous than she thought.
"Well, not for a couple of hours, at least. That is what Baygonens can do. They somewhat even out the guarders. If a guarder turns bad then the Baygonens can stop them from traveling. But however, in this case, the Baygonen turned bad."
"I can't believe this!" Sophia said and got up again. She couldn't deal with any of this anymore. She was tired and had a pounding headache. She wanted her own bed and a chance to unwind.
She started to walk away from them, she didn't want to fight anymore, this discussion was over. She made up her mind and no one was going to change it. Even though she was completely worn out, she was going to save Elizabeth's sister one way or another. She wasn't going to just let her die.
