Chapter 1
Emilys POV
For the past 4 years of my life, it has been quite a repetitive routine. My Fiancé, Nicholas, works long hours for an IT company...whatever its called, in town.
I swear, ever since he was promoted to project manager, I rarely ever see him. It used to be a rare sight to see one of us without the other. We were always together. Our friends thought it was annoying and said we would get sick of each other eventually. I miss it.
Me, on the other hand, I wanted to be part of two of my favorite things in the world; books and coffee. So I got a part time job at our local library and a cute little coffee shop within walking distance from our home.
7 AM The alarm goes off. I don't want to get up but the sun.. UGH why does the sun have to shine directly into my window through the curtains and into my eyes? It burns. My side of the bed is so warm. Looking over to the other side, I saw an empty cold area with the blankets all ruffled up.
Nicholas is at work, like usual.
I stared at the ceiling for a good 2 minutes before finally standing up from bed and heading to the bathroom for my morning routine.
Brush my teeth, wash my face, put on my make-up, which only consists of some concealer for my sleepy eyes and mascara, and take my morning vitamins. I have one vitamin that consists of all the essentials and another prescribed to me when I was a child. My parents always told me to never forget to take it, so mom sends me a new bottle of them every month in the mail.
Looking on the counter is a cute note that says “I love you Emily, have a wonderful day today” with a horribly drawn kissy face.
I love his morning notes, they always make me feel good, even when we can’t be together all the time like we used to.
I pull my waist-length wavy black hair into a high pony tail and throw on some ripped jeans and a green t-shirt. I don’t believe I am perfect looking, but when I wear green, I love how my green eyes pop. Now I’m ready for my shift at Morning Rise.
Grabbing my little backpack that holds my wallet, sweater and ear buds, I stepped outside and locked the door behind me. It's a clear sunny day out with a breeze, it feels like its in the 70s. You literally can’t beat this May weather.
One step into my walk to work and my phone beeps loudly. I hate that sound, it needs to be changed to something more easy on the ears. Putting that in the back of my mind on my ‘To-do list’, I reached for my phone from my back pocket. It's Sadie, of course it is. Sadie is my best friend.. Come to think of it, she’s like my only real friend.
We have been friends for 9 years and she is the only person I can tell absolutely everything to. She’s amazing, not to mention she’s literally perfect looking. I mean this girl has the most beautiful shoulder-length red hair, fair skin, she stands at 5′8 and has curves in all the right places. Unlike myself, I’m a petite size with small but still shapely curves and stand at 5′3. I disappear next to her beauty, but I don’t care to be seen, I’d rather be hidden.
Sadie: Em!!!!! Omg do you have today off? It’s so damn pretty outside and I have so much to tell you about Brandon!
Emily: Hey love! I’m on my way to the shop now for my shift, and have the library afterwards but i'm off at 5, want to meet up??? And who is Brandon?
Sadie: ? what do you mean, who is Brandon?? The guy i brought home 2 nights ago! I haveee to tell about my fun nights with him. It's super juicy! I’ll pick you up at 6!! Visionnn
Emily: ? okay see you at 6 ?
Sadie: ???
Sadie is a very vocal person if you haven’t realized by now. No filter at all, but it’s just another reason why I love her so much. She is the complete opposite of me.
Walking for about 10 minutes, I finally arrived at Morning Rise. The double doors are both propped open to let in that beautiful breezy weather. Did I mention how perfect the weather feels today?!
The shop is adorned with beautiful local artwork, paintings of landscapes and abstract work. Dark lush green sofas with small round wooden tables fill the front two corners of the shop, while 3 round wooden tables accompanied by 2 chairs each are scattered towards the back.
Right in the center stands a small coffee station, register, and Mrs. Clark. She and her husband opened this shop 22 years ago. It was her dream but I can see she is getting tired. I believe she turned 57 last February.
Mrs. Clark has long curly silver hair, she’s like a silver fox, with light blue eyes. Sometimes, when the light shines in her eyes they almost look like some type of made-up see-through color. It’s unreal.
“Good morning my dear Emily” Mrs. Clark smiles her brightest smile. “Good Morning to you too!” I said as I walked in, put my bag in a cubby under the counter, and gave her a warm hug.
“How many years is it going to take for you to stop calling me Mrs. Clark and start calling me Fiona or even Fi. You’re making me feel my age you little youngin” Mrs. Clark retorts. “Okay, okay”, I giggle at her and grab a cup to fill it with a delicious caramel latte.
“Fionnnaa, but I am also not a youngin anymore. I turn 23 in 2 weeks!” Rolling my eyes while giggling at her response. “When you’re my age you will understand you silly girl” Fiona says as she gives me a sweet wink and cleans the counter by the register.
Looking up at the clock on the wall, it reads 12:50. Wow, the time flew by today!! It was pretty busy this morning, 8-12pm is usually always really busy with people from businesses coming in for big orders to bring back to their office, and since we are in a great walking distance from neighborhoods! But now the hustle and bustle has slowed down, since everyone is back at work.
Fiona left to grab some lunch real quick and should be back any minute, which I will then clock out and head to the library.
As I’m cleaning up the coffee station, I hear footsteps walk into the front door, another customer! An extremely tall man, with dark brown hair which is perfectly situated on the top of his head and stormy blue eyes walks in.
I feel my breath hitch. How can someone possibly be that tall?
He looks like a business man with his dark blue fitted suit, tightly hugging his body, showing off how well built he is underneath. Suddenly I’m feeling nervous, butterflies in my stomach, but why? We have hundreds of people coming here every day. Cut it out Emily, you’re engaged to Nicholas, and being ridiculous, I thought to myself. Putting a big smile on my face, I say “Hello, welcome to Morning Rise ! What can I get you today?”
His eyes stayed glued to his phone for what felt like a lifetime, but was probably only 30 seconds in real time. Nonetheless, it still made me feel highly uncomfortable. “Ahem” I cleared my throat, trying not to sound rude, but hopefully, getting his attention, sure enough it did. He looked at me with an emotionless look, but his dark stormy eyes glared at me like he was furious.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to disrupt you, please let me know when you are ready to order” I say to him as I turned to go back to cleaning. “Coffee, black, large” he simply said in a deep tone that gave me a slight shiver up my spine. “Yes sir, that's $1.75” I reply as I set up the transaction for him to take care of while I prepare his coffee. I try not to make any eye contact with him.
As I turned around I can almost feel his piercing glare on my back, it’s like he’s trying to burn a hole right in the back of my head. What’s wrong with this guy?? I thought to myself.
Placing the coffee down, I print out his receipt, handing it to him and give him a small smile. “Thank you and have a great day!” He simply nods while keeping direct eye contact with me, making me feel like the air is suddenly being siphoned from my lungs.
What the hell, I need to get out of here, I think while I watch him turn around and leave. As he walks out the door he swiftly turns to the right by our front windows and turns his head to give me one last glare before he disappears.
