Chapter 10

It took about a week to move everyone and all the supplies, from Logan’s base to Kynos was a day walk.

Logan finally got the radio working to tell The Nautilus the progress they made,

“Come in Nautilus.”

Dead air,

“Nautilus this is Logan come in.”

Still no answer, Logan started to get a sinking feeling in his gut.

“Maybe the power went down again give it a few moments.”

Connor said trying to reassure him.

“I don’t know the power kicks back pretty qu…”

Logan was interrupted by a soft voice over the radio,

“Logan is that you?!”

“Angel yea it’s me what’s going on?”

Logan was worried he could hear the panic in her voice.

He can hear her voice crack when she spoke,

“The Nautilus.. it’s shutting down. 75% of the station is dead, the deadlocks.. Chris and I barely made to the main station.”

Logan felt his heart stop,

“What.. What do you mean? The Nautilus had a year or two left. What do you mean it’s shut down?”

Logan couldn’t wrap his mind around it, he could hear Angels tears

“The alarm went off, and the countdown started. Your dad and the elders made it to the main station, others barely made it. Logan there’s only 1500 of us left we need to get off the station now, we have a month at most right now.”

Logan sat there stunned he couldn’t talk,

“Logan did you hear me?”

Logan snapped back,

“Yea, listen gather as much supplies as you can and load them on the pods, we made an alliance with some of the natives. We should be able to bring you down sooner I just have to talk to the leader first ok sweetheart?”

Angel took a deep breath,

“I’m scared.”

Logan felt a hard lump in his throat,

“I know baby, I promise I’ll get you down here no matter what.”

Angel was quiet,

“Logan I have to tell you something in case I never get the chance to. Logan I..”

“No, don’t do that s**t. Your going to be right here beside me very soon, you are going to be fine Angel, do you understand me.”

“Ok.”

She said softly

“I love you.”

Logan said wiping a tear from his eye,

“You too, I’ll talk to you later I have to go.”

She said.

Logan swallowed the hard lump in his throat, he had to find Kyno and talk to him. Logan rushed out of the dorm before anyone could ask him what happened, he didn’t know how to tell them that their families are possibly dead.

Logan walked quickly down the hallway in search for Kyno, he finally found him.

“Hey can I talk to you it’s very important?”

Logan said trying to keep his cool.

“Sure but first let me show you something, come on.”

Logan followed him down a long hallway, the walls were wet with water. They went up some stairs and came to a big steel door, a loud buzz and click, the door opened blinding Logan. After a few blinks Logan looked around, he saw a big beautiful lake. He noticed he was standing on concrete, he looked over and saw they were standing on a giant concrete structure. He looked over the side to see they were about 20 feet high and there was water flowing out of the concrete structure.

Logan was stunned,

“What is this place?”

Kyno chuckled,

“Back in the old times it was called a dam, they were used to control water flow and generate electricity. This particular one just so happened to be a secret military base disguised as a dam, the main part of the base is under the lake and only be entered through the dam. Luckly for us it was abandoned when we found it with most of its supplies.”

Kyno pointed to the little cement block with a steel reinforced door that they came out of. Logan looked around and was amazed by the beauty of the lake, it was so perfect and peaceful. Above the door was a little glass dome with a blinking red light, Logan pointed at it.

“What’s that?”

“A camera so we can see who’s here, we have two people at all times watching the door and their the only ones who can open and close the door.”

Kyno said giving the thumbs up, a buzz with a loud click and the door popped open again. They went back the way they came down the stairs and threw the hall.

“So the dam gives you electricity, how?”

Logan asked as they entered the mess hall, grabbing some lunch. The man handed them a tray with a few different foods on it.

Kyno sat down at a table and opened his water bottle,

“Well when water is released through the dam, it spins a turbine connected to a generator that produces electricity. So as long as theirs water, we have electricity. And luckly for us because this was a military base we have replacement parts to last us.”

Logan looked at his tray, he had a bowl of brown goop that had some orange, green and white to it. He poked it with his spoon, he had a roll of bread and a fruit cup.

“It taste better then it looks, it stew. It has chunks of beef and some vegetables in a thick broth.”

Kyno said smiling at Logan’s curiosity.

Logan took a spoon full and tried a small bite, it was salty but not bad. Logan was about to ask Kyno and his people when someone sat down next to him.

Rory placed her tray down next to Logan and sat down, she was wearing a grey tank top that showed her breast. She had her hair in a messy bun, she had some dirt smeared on her.

Logan thought she looked so beautiful.

“Rory, how was the harvesting?”

Asked Kyno eating his stew.

Rory shoveled the stew in her mouth,

“Long, we’re about 78% done.”

Logan took a big bite of his stew, it tasted better when he had all the stuff together, he took another big bite.

“Kyno, I just got news that.. That The Nautilus has less then a month, I was just informed that more then half my people died and The Nautilus is shutting down. I only have 1500 people left, I know we only just met and I just gained your trust but I need the rest of my people down here now.”

Kyno wiped his mouth with a napkin and looked at Rory,

“Well we do have an old wing that’s not being used, it’s would be a bit tight but it should house your people at lease till spring. Come spring time you and your people will have to find a home of your own, we can help you with that.”

Rory nodded her head,

“Yea I mean it may take about a few days to reroute power to that section and clean it up. But supplying it may be tricky, we’d have to make a run.”

She said pulling apart her bread.

“They have supply they can bring down from the station, I’ll have them bring as much as possible down. Thank you so much, this means a lot thank you.”

Logan said getting up from his seat, he made it down the hall and into the dorm.

He sat at the radio,

“Nautilus, come in Nautilus.”

No answer

“Nautilus this is Logan come in.”

“Logan is that you?”

Said a voice,

“Dad? Yea it’s me, are you guys ok?”

“Define ok. It’s getting hard to keep everyone calm after the shutdown, I hope you have some good news son.”

“Yea dad I do, in few days you’ll all be able to come down. We made allies with some of the natives and they’ve agreed to let us stay with them till he find a home down here.”

Logan heard his dad sigh with relief,

“Logan you did it my boy, how soon can we start shuttling down?”

“A few days, they have to set up it up. In the mean time pack as much as you can. Send down as many supply drops as you can, get everyone ready and stay by the radio ok?”

“Affirmative, Logan be careful.”

Logan’s dad said.

“You too dad.”

Logan got up from the radio, he pulled Connor aside and told him everything.

A tear went fell from his eye,

“Did you hear if my mom made it?”

Logan shook his head,

“No, all I know is 1500 remain. How am I going to tell everyone? I don’t know who’s still alive and who’s not.”

Connor wipes his eyes and cleared his throat,

“Well let’s get things set up for them, then sooner we get that wing running the sooner we find out. Come on I’ll go with you to tell everybody.”

Logan smiled and put his arm around Conner, they went and told the rest of the crew. Of course they panicked and cried asking if their loved ones made it or not.

“I don’t know but if we help Kynos group to get the old wing up and running then they can come down. We can find out and have a ceremony for the lost, that’s the lease we can do for them.”

Everyone nodded their heads.
