Chapter 1: Birthday Celebration
10:15 am a phone rings, ‘ Hello boss all is set, time to tango’, said Grego over the phone.
“I see,” Don Pedro responded and dropped the call.
He had carefully conveyed a message to the Don that the environment was safe for him to step out, an indication that their men had mounted every key spot across the seven boulevards he was to drive past. This was a routine The Don had intentionally built to ensure his safety from the interpol and rival cartels.
10.20 am staring at herself in the mirror while making up, her Phone rings "who could be calling this old girl" she asks giggling at her remarks about herself Claire said.
She glances at the phone screen and smiles, Her daughter's school teacher "hello sweetie" she says. "Mummy" Sylvia responds.
"How are you today?" Claire inquires in her usual manner, "I am good mom," Sylvia replies.
"Called to...." Sylvia said, "remind me of the school's open day right, not to worry honey I will be there" Claire cut her in.
"Thanks mom, love you" Sylvia says, "love you too my baby" Claire reponds and ends the call.
"Let's hurry spur" she says as she starts dressing, she approaches the wardrobe and picks a jean trouser and shirt long sleeve shirt with an Adidas footwear, picks the gift pack she had organized for her daughter the previous night, then steps out of the house through the front door, and into the garage.
She drives out her Audi TT convertible, a car she got herself as a birthday gift the previous year. Steps out of the vehicle while spur sits excitedly in front, and carefully shuts the garage door. Then returns to the vehicle and zooms off.
It was Sicily's St Augustine's high school's open day and the Don wanted to make a surprise trip to the school as his only son was a student in that school, if only his late wife was still alive all this hassle would not have been necessary.
10:45 am, two vehicles came to a halt at the entrance of the school building, a Chevrolet Suburban SUV closely followed by a Durango Durango in which sat two his sicarios clad in black suits and sun shades. Once parked, these Steen-faced fellows carefully scanned the environment for a few seconds before speaking into a handheld intercom, then a bulky Grego walked out from the front of the first vehicle. From his looks, he perfectly fitted the description of a mafia bodyguard. From the look of things there was definitely another person in the back seat of the vehicle whose identity remained concealed, a few seconds later having satisfied that all was safe, Grego opens the back door of the owners side of the suv. Then steps out Don Pedro, he had come to the shocking dismay of onlookers. He was not a common sight to behold on a school open day.
Lost in his thoughts standing on the terrace was Santander Pedro, he was full of grief since the morning of this particular day.
Still behind the tilled pillars leading to schools entrance was he, talking to his close friend craig, ‘ I don't know what an open day and coincidentally my birthday is going to look like without my mom’
‘Sorry pal we are going to be fine, my parents aren't showing up as well’ Craig encouraged him smiling as a way of encouragement.
Unknown to Santa, his Dad had decided to pay him a surprise visit so they could cut his birthday cake and give him some gifts.
Santa only talked with his father on phone via video calls and during holidays his father was hardly around as he was always on the run from CIA or interpol.
Then the unimaginable happened, ‘Daddy’ Santa screamed as his father alighted from the vehicle, and started running towards his Dad with joy”, all eyes turned towards their direction and people stared in uttermost disbelief as no one ever believed Don Pedro could ever make a public appearance.
Halfway across the distance an excited little dog spur was letting out barks, this was because spur had just arrived with Miss Claire, in the dog's usual manner, he stopped at the entrance to Sylvia's classroom which he had mastered because of previous visits. As he starts letting out his tiny barks, on sighting him, Sylvia runs to grab her little pet, and in an instant she bumps into Pedro who was running to meet his Dad, and they both fall in different directions.
This had better not be true, said Ms.Claire, as she already had heard what the Don was capable of and how short his temperament was. Everyone around stood back as no one wanted to meddle, but as the professional nurse that Ms Claire was, she had to step in, and save a life. People buzzed as they noticed that Santa was motionless having hit his head on the pillar, and also had broken his nose while Sylvia was unhurt.
Claire quickly pulled her handkerchief and applied a few medical procedures and in a bid to stop the nose bleeding and see if she could resuscitate the child.
Grego, who had come running immediately when the accident happened had gotten where they were, so tapped her on the back as she was engrossed with the first aid administration.
“Madam step aside” he said with his husky voice.
Looking up she saw the scar face who was previously standing behind the Don. His stern look was compelling enough, so She obliged. He lifted Santa to his shoulders and walked down the corridor in the direction of the school's medical center.
The show was over, but one thing caught the attention of everyone, The Don walked briskly after them, his gift pac still in his hands, from the but on getting to the lawn motioned at the other two, me in black who were few meters away from him and issued instructions at a very low tone to them, while looking very disturbed, obviously at the sight of his son's broken nose. Then he walked to his vehicle and zoomed off the school premises afterwards leaving the backup vehicle with two guards behind.
People started whispering to one another in low tones, they all knew it was not going to end well for Miss Claire or her daughter as no one in the history of Sicily ever went scot free after intentionally or incidentally spilling the blood of the Pedro cartel members or family except it was for medical reasons, and this wasn't looking like it was going to end up in a different manner, judging from the Don's reaction.
1:00 pm seated on his sofa, Don sits calmly staring at the ceiling fan while mentally assessing the incident that just happened. He was a man of very few words, one whose every word was as good as an order.
He was very fond of his apparent hair (Santander) and was still pondering on the ideal punishment meant to be meted out to the young lady and her daughter who had spoiled a day he took so much pain to plan. Then his phone rings but he is not in the mood to talk, the phone ringing silences after some seconds. Then his personal phone rings almost immediately after the other phone stops ringing. He said “The reason these two calls came in at the same time must be connected” so he picked the call.
“Hello”, the caller said, “yes” the Don retorted recognizing the female voice at the other end. “Bravo monsieur, Mayday at cefalú” and the line went dead.
“So much for a day,” the Don thought to himself. Bravo meant,
“ the deal had been done and but mayday meant “scissors was in danger."
and needed immediate back
