Chapter 2:

Alpha: A man about Saphir’s age spoke first. “I am Derrick of the Blue Dawn pack.” He was lean and had reddish brown hair. Freckles sprinkled across his fair skin under his honey brown eyes. An older man sat next to him. He had dark blue eyes that almost looked gray. His long brown hair was streaked with gray, matching his goatee. “I am Tobias of the Red Star Pack. “I am Sterling of the Black Lightening Pack.” He had braids twisted in his long, black hair. His pale blue eyes contrasted with his dark skin, making them appear to glow. The last Alpha seemed to be the oldest. He had wrinkles, and shades of gray ran through his hair and beard. “I am Daniel of the Midnight Pack.” The King rose from his chair. “Before we start the ceremony I’d like to give my condolences to Alpha. I am greatly saddened by your father’s death. He was a good man and I considered him a close friend.” He bowed his head. “I’m sorry I was not able to give my condolences when it happened. Their was a string of rogue attacks in the Southern territories that needed my attention.” He looked at me with a smile. “But he raised a strong daughter, and I know he would be proud.” I returned his smile. “Thank you.” My wolf beamed. Even the King of Alphas could see how strong we are. Alpha Edward raised his glass. “To Alpha William and Luna Kaitlyn.” Everyone raised their glass, stating the same, and took a sip of their wine. “Now for the ceremony. Alpha, please stand.” I did as I was told. A tray was placed in front of me, containing a silver knife, a small glass vial, a quill, and an old scroll. “You will make a small incision on your palm, letting a few drops fall into the vial. You will then sign your name among the list of past Alphas of The Sun Pack. This means that from today onward, you pledge to protect your pack. Everything comes second to this.” I looked at my father’s name. I could see the proud smile he had on his face the day I pledged to lead The Sun Pack. I took the knife and sliced it across my palm. My endorphins were flowing so fast I didn’t feel the pain. I let just enough blood drip in the vial to sign my name. I savored this moment as I watched red letter dry, sealing my fate. I have been training my whole life for this, and the moment was finally here. I am officially an Alpha. The cut on my palm had healed, and I was given a cloth with alcohol to clean the remainder of the blood. “Welcome Alpha Alpha of The Sun Pack,” King Edward said, smiling. My wolf howled internally, celebrating our long awaited victory. I looked at him, then around the room. All the Alphas had smiles on their faces, except for Xavier. He had a look of disbelief, like he was expecting this to be a prank. Just wait until he sees me at the ranking. He won’t know what hit him. The rest of the meeting was focused on business discussions. Daniel and Xavier bickered over territory lines, apparently this has been going on between the packs for decades. There was a waterfall that laid right on the territory line, and each wanted to possess the entire water area. Neither got what they wanted. Daniel was asked if his son would be sworn in as the new Alpha at the next Summit. I was surprised that he had not made a decision yet. Xavier insisted that he should have handed the reigns over a long time ago. He seemed to lack political manner, or any kind for that matter. How anyone let Xavier become Alpha is beyond me. Everyone went over population numbers and training programs for pups of age, as well as the Mating Ball. There were recurring rogue attacks in the southern regions. Sterling and Xavier renewed there alliance agreement, joining forces to end the rogue’s terror. Derrick also offered his assistance as well. After all business was discussed we were allowed to socialize in the lounge area and enjoy food and drinks. I sat on the sofas with Tobias and Daniel as they recounted stories of my father and them when they were novice Alphas. I couldn’t picture my father as a foolish man, or Daniel and Tobias for that matter. “It’s the courage of a young man that will get him in trouble, especially if a woman is involved. I remember when your father met Kaitlyn. It was his third time attending the mating ball and he didn’t think he’d ever find a mate. But when he saw her it was like he didn’t see anything else,” Tobias smiled. Daniel chuckled. “This hungry wolf practically marked her in the middle of the ball room! She was really sweet though. He always made her smile.” Tobias looked at me. “You look just like her.” “Thank you,” I beamed. My mother was beautiful and graceful. I’d be lucky to have a tenth of her beauty. “I wonder if you can dance like her.” Tobias stretched a hand out to me. “I would love to, but I drank to much. I don’t think I can stand, let alone dance.” “Save me a dance tomorrow?” “Me too,” Daniel asked. “You have my word.” “I should head up to my room,” Tobias said. “Maria will be waiting for me.” “I should go too, before I drink anymore. Drinking is a younger man’s game.” Daniel winked at me. I waved my goodbyes to them. It was getting late and I’m sure Tallia is waiting for me. I was about to stand up to leave when I heard Derick yell, “Alpha, come join us,” from across the room. I hadn’t had a chance to talk to the other Alphas yet, and this would be a good opportunity to do so. I stood and instantly fell back on to the couch. I cursed the stiletto heels Tallia had convinced me to wear. The narrow skirt to my dress didn’t help either. I loved the look of dresses and heels, but they weren’t very practical. “I’ll help you,” Derick said, but before he could get out of his chair Xavier beat him to it. Using his wolf-speed he was at my side in a matter of seconds. “I’ll do it. You don’t want to go back to your Luna smelling like another she-wolf.” Sterling laughed. “Does the ball-and-chain have you on a tight leash? We don’t have to worry about answering to anyone. Right, Xavier?” Derick rolled his eyes. “She is not my ball-and-chain. She is my mate, my other half, my Luna. You wouldn’t understand…” His voice faded when Xavier’s hand wrapped around my waist. I couldn’t help, but look in his gray eyes. He looked at me intensely like he was trying to read my thoughts. I could feel his stormy eyes pulling me in. “Do you have a Luna, Alpha.” My drunken trance was broken when I heard Sterling’s question. Xavier seemed taken aback. He straightened up and walked me to the table. “No, I don’t,” I said, lowering into the chair. “Wait. Would they be called a Luna,” he asked, confused. “I don’t know what else I would call him.” “That’s a woman’s title,” Xavier cut in. “You also thought Alpha was a man’s title, but you were wrong about that too,” I retorted. Sterling and Derick laughed at my comeback. “You can’t call a man Luna.” “Then what would you call him?” “An unlucky son-of-a-b*tch.” “Any man would be lucky to have me. I’m fast, strong, and one hell of a ruler.” “I don’t think a man exists that could handle you.” I turned to Derick and Sterling. “Is he always this rude?” “He usually just puffs his chest out like a gorilla,” Derick quipped. I burst out laughing. “This calls for shots.” I waved at the bartender. “Four shots of whiskey, please.” “I am not toasting to an insult directed at me,” Xavier said, sulking. “If you’re still this grumpy then you need two shots.” I turned towards the bar. “Make that five shots.” “Are you trying to get me drunk, Alpha Alpha.” “In your dreams.” “Whatever you say, Alpha Alpha.” I didn’t like the way he was saying my name like there was an inside joke I wasn’t a part of. “Are you making fun of my name?” “Yes,” Xavier said completely deadpan. “Were your parents hoping for a boy?” “My father named me Alpha so that despite what people think of me they always have to call me by my title.” I smirked at him. When our shots were served, Xavier stared at the bottom of his glass before saying, “Your Father… He was a good man. He was the only one that encouraged me to challenge Daniel during the ranking. He said if I lost, I learned my lesson, and if I won, the I deserved the conquest. I only met him once, but that’s all I need to know about him if he’s open and honest like that.” He raised his glass. “To Alpha William.” I smiled and raised mine. “To Alpha William.” We all took our shots in unison. Xavier lifted his second shot glass. “To chest-puffing gorillas and the Bastard that will be the first male Luna,” he said before throwing it back. I sighed and rolled my eyes. Just when I thought he was a decent person he says something like that! My wolf's growl mirrored my annoyance. “On that note, I’m heading to my room.” I stood on shaky legs and turned slowly, trying not to fall. “Should I join you,” Xavier asked. My eyes must be popping out of my head from how wide I had opened them. What the f*ck? I barely knew this *sshole and he thought I was going to invite him up to my room. I had to let him know I wasn’t interested. I squared my shoulders and gave him an incredulous look. “I’m not that type of wolf. I won’t wag my tail for just anyone.” I gave him a smirk. My comment received a laugh from Sterling and Derick. “Get your mind out of the gutter, Alpha Alpha.” He raised his hands in surrender. “My intentions are gentlemanly. You’re wobbling just standing there. I can’t imagine how you were planning to get to your room.” I gritted my teeth. I hated asking for help, but the alcohol was wreaking havoc on my equilibrium. I narrowed my eyes at him. “Fine. But one wrong move and I’ll break your kneecaps.” “I like her! We should keep her around, so Xavier’s head doesn’t get too big,” Sterling laughed. “Make sure you’re a perfect gentleman.” Derick wagged his finger like a father who was concern for his daughter, before he and Sterling headed to the door. “Ha ha. You guys are hilarious,” he said as he walked towards me. He wrapped his arm around my waist, and the same feeling seemed to flow through me. His scent hit me, causing my legs to feel like jelly. I subconsciously leaned into him. I tried to take a step forward, but tripped over my own feet. Xavier pulled me closer to him before I could fall forward. Something about his arms wrapped around me felt so comforting. I wanted to take a whiff of his scent now that I was this close, but to my dismay he let go of me. He leaned me against a wall and kneeled down on one knee. To my surprise, he lifted my foot and slid off my three inch stiletto, then the other one. He looked up at me with a small smile. “That will be more comfortable.” He stood up and I had to tilt my chin up to look in his eyes. “I’m going to carry you up to your room.” I wasn’t the damsel in distress type, but I couldn’t say no. I wanted his arms around me again. What’s wrong with me? He’s been an asshole to me since we met. He insulted my name and has doubted my abilities, and I have only known him for a few hours. The alcohol must be messing with my brain. “Okay.” He gently lifted me into his arms. Heat seemed to emanate from his hands and It felt so comfortable. Even my wolf sighed in content. My head felt heavy and I slowly lowered it onto his shoulder. “Comfortable,” Xavier asked in his deep voice. I could feel the vibrations through his chest. I couldn’t admit to his how good his arms felt around me. “I’m tired.” It wasn’t a lie. I had traveled all day and the last shot seemed to be going straight to my head. “What room are you in?” “Six.” He chuckled. “That makes us neighbors. I’m in the room across the hall.” I smiled to myself. For some reason in my drunken state it made sense that his room would be across from mine. He slowly walked me towards my room. After a long hallway and a flight of stairs he stopped. “We’re here.” He gently set me down, and the fogginess in my head seemed to clear up. “Do you have your key?” I pulled my key from the inside pocket of the hem of my skirt. I hated lugging around a purse. Everything I need should fit in a few pockets, so I had them sewn in. “Is there anything else up there I should know about,” Xavier asked with a smirk. “A lady never reveals her secrets, but lets just say if you had made a wrong move you’d be on the ground in pain.” I gave him a sweet smile. “Good night, Alpha Alpha,” he said, as I slide the key in and turned the knob. By his tone and the smart-*ss grin on his face I could tell that he was trying to annoy me again. “Good night, Alpha Gorilla.” I closed the door, but not before seeing the smile drop from his face. His shock made me burst out laughing. I turned to find Tallia on my bed in a sexy, black and white maid costume. Her long black hair was pulled back in a sleek pony tail and her lips were colored bright red. “Hello, Master,” she greeted me in a sultry voice. “Can I fluff your pillows, Alpha Alpha?”
