Chapter Forty I followed Boris into the palace kitchen, and down into the cellar. I hesitated as the darkness crept in around me. I held onto my candle, praying slightly that it wouldn’t go out. The cellar was cold and the air felt stale. But it was a billion times better than a prison. Vera laid on the bed, her belly protruding through her clothes. Flo, feeling around her belly, checking in on the baby. “Everything seems to be running its course, its a matter of days now.” She smiled at her. Vera didn’t seem to respond. She just sat there staring directly at us as we entered the room. Around us ten guards stuffed themselves anywhere they could fit. It was a very cramped space. “Vera.” I greeted her briefly. Trying to swallow my own fear. Her gaze didn’t falter even the slightest.
