Chapter Fifty-Three: RegretPresent day The clock chimed through the darkness, waking Raven with a start. He sat up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. Another day had passed. Only two more remained. He had survived so far; the dark oblivion and the rats had not claimed him yet, but a nagging feeling of regret poked at his mind. Yesterday he had longed for death again, just as Kiri had urged him not to. Her words echoed inside his head: “Wishing for death is an insult to those who have it forced upon them.” It was so unfair to think as he had done, so unkind to the people who had made sacrifices so that he could live.
