ANNA TONI HAD been gone for hours when I woke up, and it was to the sound of the front door opening. I was barely awake, since I fell asleep on the couch waiting for Lanz to arrive. I only got one message from him and it was a very short one telling me he would be late, and he was sorry that he had to be away on a day we were supposed to be together. That was it. I was really getting worried about him now, or about what the problem was. If he’d been gone that long, it must be serious, as well as the issue in the coffee shop was serious. I couldn’t sleep in the bedroom because I wanted him there, and found myself in the couch watching TV to try to stay awake, thinking I might be able to start with my Christmas décor but then too unfocused and edgy to actually get up to get the boxes out f
