Chapter 9 Rose : The Chase Is On

765 Words
I wake up with a start. Realisation slowly dawning on me, that it was only a dream. I was having a nightmare. A nightmare of the big bad wolf. Instead of him yielding to my touch, he was about to bite my hand off! What a nightmare! I look out my window and see that first light has not even broke out. I know I won't be able to sleep. I get up and dress warmly against the bite of the morning cold. I pack some food and provisions. Enough to last me for 2 to 3 days. I don't intend telling Father where I will go in case he is being asked, forcefully, about my whereabouts. I wrap my rose gold pelisse over my shoulders and meet Lilly in the back yard. I walk quickly to the shed making sure, Phoenix is not stuck but can leave whenever he wants to. I enter the shed and no Phoenix . I notice my wolf painting is lying on the floor. Strange, I wonder how it got there. I pick it up and place it back on its spot, next to the painting of Phoenix. With nothing keeping me back, I mount Lilly and make my way into the forrest. My hunting has tought me that scent plays a very important role in tracking your prey. I know today, I've become the prey of the Elite Soldiers. I have been hunting for food for my community since the tender age of six! I will not be caught! I will not make it easy for them to get me. I am on my way to my special place. No one knows about it and since I found the place, I've never crossed paths with any human being. I feel pretty confident that it will be a good hide out for the next couple of days. I will take the longer trail to be safe and mask my scent for hound dogs. Before I steer Lilly into the river. I stop and take out some cow manure. Gross, right! I know! However, I know, that I have to mask my scent and this is the only way I could think of, on such short notice! A girl has to do what a girl has to do, right! I smear the manure all over my clothes and body and ask Lilly to please allow me to ride her, cow manure and all. Lilly always the lady, graciously allows me to mount her, I give her an extra treat, hoping it will show my gratitude and thank fullness. Lilly trots carefully into the river and we steer our way across the river down stream, although my hideout is up stream. After we crossed the river safely we make our way further down stream. I re-apply the cow manure. Now we will head out to my hiding spot. I know I have to be careful not to leave any traces of Lilly or myself on our trail. It took us the whole day to get to my hiding spot. I was extra careful and left nothing for chance. My motivation, Father and Grey of course! As I dismount Lilly my body aches of riding her the whole day. I strip and both Lilly and I take a nice long bath in the warm pond, washing away the days sweat, worry and cow manure! So far I have not heard a sound that could alert me that we were followed. I smile and congratulate myself on a plan well executed! I make my bed, ate some bread and luke warm coffee and as soon as my head hit the blanket I fell into a deep dreamless sleep. The next morning, I woke up to Lilly licking my face. My stomach growls. "Are you hungry girl?" I ask Lilly as I get up and fold my blankets. I'll have to go out an hunt for food. I take my bow and cross and went off hunting. In less than an hours time I'm back with a catch. I make a fire inside the cave, close by. I don't want the smoke to give away my location. After Lilly and I ate, tummies to the brim, I'm so lazy. I lie down on my back watching the clear blue sky. I wonder what is happening in Kader. I wonder if the Elite soldiers continued with their inventory. Tomorrow at noon the Vicario gala will be held. I only have one more day to go, one more day to stay hidden and then I will be home free.
