Chapter 1
Troy’s POV
I scowled darkly before taking a couple of steps backwards when a mated couple had almost fallen on me while making out and grinding against each other drunkenly. The drink the lady was clutching had managed to spill a little over my shirt and I growled low in my throat as the cold liquid started to seep into my shirt, irritation clawing its way beneath my skin and digging a hole in my chest instantly.
Their eyes widened in horror the moment their startled gazes had settled on my face and realization had dawned in their eyes.
“A- alpha, we’re so s- sorry, alpha.” The Beta stuttered out immediately, his scent quickly changing from that of a really relaxed and s*x crazed one, to a frightened one as he lowered his head in respect.
People were starting to turn their heads around to stare at the little scene we were undoubtedly starting to create as they breathed in the frightened pheromones of the drunk couples were emitting and the pissed scent oozing off my pores in waves– a scent so strong, it was going to be clouding the whole air with its thickness in a few more minutes.
I felt a warm hand settle on my shoulder and the familiar scent of my beta drift into my nose in the next second.
“Hey man, knock it off. You know they’re just a bunch of idiots.” My beta, Stan said to me in a low voice and I finally lowered the eyes which I still had pinned on the throat of the man who had stuttered out an apology, despite the fact that his head was lowered respectfully and the side of his neck, bared a little.
I sucked in a deep breath and puffed it out on a low grunt before glancing around from side to side to see that the whole people around us had stopped all what they were doing and were currently staring at me — they all scattered around almost immediately and got back to all what they were doing before, a nervous scent clinging to the air thickly.
“Why don’t you take a little walk? To clear your head off.” My beta who already knew why I had reacted in the way I had done back then suggested and I nodded my head once at him before picking up my scotch filled glass and turning around to exit the current location I was in.
I walked through the crowd of sweaty bodies, different scents of alphas and betas digging its way into my nose as the crowd automatically parted for me in respect, the moment my scent wafted through the air.
I stood a few feet away from the ocean, staring down into the dark sea, the bright lights situated around this whole arena in preparation for this huge gathering had managed to lighten a part of the clear expanse of sand, right before the bed of the ocean– but I had chosen to walk closer, towards the edge of the water, because I wanted to calming spirit to wash over my overworked wolf and calm it down.
The bright full moon shone brightly in the still ocean and dragged in another deep, calming breath, willing the whole anger still clinging around the mind of my wolf to fade away.
I had a feeling something like this was going to happen, even before the preparations had started for the yearly werewolves gathering. A lot of neighboring packs of alphas and betas usually come together to plan and celebrate the growth of each division of packs, at the end of each year by hosting a huge gathering whereby those said pack members would be able to come together to wine, dine and party together until dawn.
I knew I was going to end up losing control of my wolf along the line tonight, but I never expected my reason for losing control to be something as absurd as that.
It was a good thing had come in when he had done.
It wasn’t hidden news that Alpha Troy, the future Lead Alpha of ten different packs, was still mateless at the age of twenty five, and that alone was more than enough reason for my wolf to lose control of itself tonight after seeing a mated couple looking so contented, horny and drunk in each other’s arms.
Every descendant from two pure blooded wolves– in my own case, was supposed to have come across their mate from the young age of seventeen to nineteen, ever since the existence of werewolves had begun…
But here I was, at age twenty five, still completely mateless. And at this point, members of the other packs in our food chain would have most definitely started to wonder amongst themselves, the reason as to why I was still without a mate.
I was supposed to have taken the spot of my father and start to rule the whole ten packs ever since I clocked eighteen, but I couldn’t be crowned the new Alphas of Alphas without a mate by my side… and so I had been asked to wait until whenever the moon goddess lead me to my Luna. I hoped and prayed I would one day come across my mate ever since then, to no avail, and the years passed by gradually.
The second and only remaining pure blooded mated wolves in the history of werewolves, after my parents – a pack beneath the largest pack in the wolves chain, who had surprisingly given birth to three girls, a few years after I was born. Everyone, including my parents, had thought one of the triplets was going to become my mate since we were the only unmated pure blooded wolves here on earth… and were automatically meant to carry on the bloodline of pure blooded wolves.
They had all thought wrong because one after the other, some days after I clocked eighteen years, the eldest of the girls found her mate, who was an alpha on the lower parts of the wolves chain, and had mated with him immediately.
I had still kept hoping one of the remaining two girls would end up being my mate, but a few months later, the second girl also found her mate, and my heart shattered even more… not because I was in love with the second daughter or anything, but because I was still without a mate, the main reason as to why I still wasn’t a crowned Alpha of Alphas yet.
A year later, the third daughter found her mate, who was a beta, and got mated to him immediately, successfully quenching the little hope I still had in my heart that the third daughter was going to one day wake up and become my Luna.
It was at that point that the realization sank into my head that I wasn’t going to be getting mated to a pure blooded alpha, and so, at age twenty years, I had started the real search for a mate.
I went to a lot of alphas gatherings, countless gatherings, in hopes of one day coming across my mate, to no avail.
And now, if I was being honest with myself, I was starting to get really tired of searching for something that might not even be out there to begin with.
Perhaps, I was part of that set of unfortunate werewolves whose mates weren’t born yet, or those whose mate had died years ago.
I dragged a deep breath into my lungs and threw the rest of my scotch into my throat before discarding the glass into the water, noticing the fact that my wolf had completely calmed down and wasn’t in a heated mood anymore. The sea clapped around for a few seconds and a cold gust of air blew directly into my whole body from the direction of the ocean, making my hair blow around wildly. The air felt like it moved my body a little – despite how absurd it might sound.
Another sharp gust of breeze blew directly into my body from the direction of the ocean and I closed my eyes a little as I felt sand start to get blown around from the ground beneath my feet, and I wanted to avoid it from getting into my eyes. A few seconds later and intense calmness had settled on the whole serenity surrounding this atmosphere once again and I blinked my eyes wide open and blinked once again before staring up into the sky on noticing how sharp the full moon was shining.
It seemed like the moon had somehow gotten even bigger and brighter through the long seconds which I had spent with my eyes shut close, moments ago. I glanced up into the sky once again and winced a little when it felt like the force of the moon was almost resembling that of a sun with how intense it had felt to look directly at it, for a second back then.
Or perhaps I was just losing my mind even more?
My heart suddenly skipped a few beats and my eyes slid shut immediately, and I felt my previously calmed wolf start to stir in my head almost immediately. I waited a few seconds, not knowing what to make of all what was happening at this very moment.
My heart race started to return back to its normal pace right before it suddenly halted and froze in place, sending an icy feeling which I couldn’t seem to make sense of, over my whole body. A sharp scent filled up my whole head in the next second and I felt a low growl start to build up in the middle of my chest almost immediately as I snapped my now red eyes open and turned around slowly, the scent that had filled my head up heightening even more as each second seemed to be slowly crawling by.
The scent got even thicker as I completely turned around and I let out a low rumbling growl just as my wolf started to howl in my head, the word ‘mate’ echoing around in my head continuously.
I followed the sharp scent which only got thicker as I took each step forward and my mouth started to water as the scent got so strong, I could taste its light fruity essence on my tongue along with the cold breeze which was still blowing around wildly.
Two steps more and my fangs were almost bursting out of gums and I the urge to set my eyes on my mate after waiting for over eight years was so intense, it got hard to drag in breaths into my lungs, my heartbeat racing wildly, an unidentifiable feeling managing to slide down my spine, setting in the lower part of my back in anticipation.
That was, until I finally set my eyes on my mate which the moon goddess had picked out for me.
