Chapter 5 Interest

In the vast forest a variety of animals can be heard. Strong winds beat the leaves of the forest. They seem to dance in the air that gives life to all creatures on earth.

Every morning the birds sing as if rejoicing in the new morning that is coming. Wild animals looking for food every day.

But Martin Dela Sergio has a different obsession with the jungle. He was a handsome and courageous hunter. But his passion in the jungle is hunting the parrot. He collects them and teaches speech.

This is what he often talks about in their house. He is the only child of the couple Dado and Tessa. He was very young when his parents died. He was the son of a brave soldier but his parents died in the ambush.

He study as veterinarian but due to financial issues he did not complete the course. He chose to be a hunter and raise many parrots. He was happy with that kind of life. Simple and quiet.

"Martin! Martin!" his mother called.

Martin turned to the source of the voice. His mother knew where he always stayed in the middle of the forest. Every time he goes home at noon, his mother picks him up.

"Mom I'm just here!" Martin shouted and waving his right hand.

The mother immediately approached him where he was. His mother was carrying a basket containing food. Every time he had lunch in the forest and he was served by his mother. Although Martin is not the couple's real son, but they love him dearly. Even in the things Martin wanted they supported.

"Son, I brought you food!" His mother said breathlessly.

His mother is already old. But she still tried to take care of Martin especially with food. She does not want to let Martin will get sick.

"Mom, you don't have to do this. I'm already old enough and I can go back home to eat!" Martin said.

"No son, as long as I live I will take care of you. That's what we promised to your late parents," His mother insisted.

Martin's father and his acclaimed parent are close friends. So even though he was not a real blood or relative, he was considered a real child.

"Thank you Mom!"

Martin hugged her as saying thank you. As a good child he reciprocates the love of his acclaimed parent. At his age Martin has never met a woman who can take his attention. He had spent his time in the forest and he was satisfied with life and with his acclaimed parents.

"Better you eat now, its already late. After you done I need to take back the plates, so I can wash it immediately," His mother said while putting down the food on the wooden table.

Martin helped his mother to put down his food. No matter how hard for his mother but she tried to convince Martin to stop hunting. Martin doesn't want to go back home because he hasn't caught a bird yet. Only a deep breath was given to his mother as an answer.

After Martin ate his mother immediately told him that she need to go back home. Martin silently smiled staring at his mother. Martin is happy to have a mother like Tessa. Even he is not a real child but they truly love him.

"Be careful Mom!" Martin waving his hand saying goodbye to his Mother.

"Don't stay up late son. There are so many wild animals in the forest!" His mother reminded him.

"Thank you mother! I will remember what you said," He replied.

An hour later Martin failed to catch a bird. So he just went to the hidden stream in the forest. He wanted to relieve the hot weather so he thought of taking a bath.

A virgin hidden stream was Martin’s pastime to make himself feel better. It is a small stream in the middle of the forest. It is around thirty feet tall. The water is strong falling from above. The water was so clear and refreshing.

Rocks and small fish can be seen at the bottom. Around it, there are a few orchids hanging in the trees. Most of the time when orchids bloom the fragrant scent will circulate to the whole forest.

Before reaching this stream, it will need pass through thorny surroundings. Low and small cave before seeing the beautiful stream hidden in the forest.

Only Martin knows this place. He had been in the forest for so long. This hidden place is never seen anyone astray to go bathe in the stream. Martin considered as a keeper and guardian of the forest.

It was getting late when Martin got home. As he enjoyed bathing he forgot the time, so he went home at twilight time. He was sure his mother was worried again. But as he walked he noticed a bird wounded on the road.

He checked the bird even though it was not his inclined to catch. On his examination, the wings was broken so that it could not fly. He did not know what had happened to the bird. He took it home for treatment. He put the bird in the cage that he always carrying every day.

When he arrived at their home, he was immediately greeted by his worried mother. His mother turned to the bird inside the cage. She did not expect that Martin will catch a different kind of animals.

"What happened to the bird?"

"I don't know. I just saw it on the road wounded. I need to treat it so the wings will not worsen," said Martin.

Martin hurriedly brought the bird to the small room behind their house. He was conducting the treatment for the bird so it can fly again. This bird is a night owl. Mostly they are going out from twilight and stay awake until just before or even after dawn.

Both of which help them excel at nighttime hunting. In addition, the cover of darkness helps nocturnal owls avoid predators, as well as to attack prey, principally because their feathers hardly make any noise when they fly.

This kind of birds are now endangered due to low count of thier species. The night owl are barely to see them. Hopefully everyone will appreciate them because they are few in the forest.

At the mansion, Alejandro and Yani rested early. After introducing Yani to all the staff at the mansion they prepared to face the entire rancho's worker's.

In the middle of the night Yani woke up and went to the toilet. She glanced at her husband who was sound asleep on the sofa. She could not quite imagine that there was a man like Alejandro who was willing to keep his promise. From the corner there is a small lampshade that gives a dim light to the whole room.

Yani had the strength to face all the people in the mansion because of Alejandro's help. Through her husband she slowly discovers the mysterious secret of the Vergara family.

As she came out of from the toilet , her eyes glued at the door when she heard footsteps outside. She approached near the door and pressed her ear on the wooden door to hear the sound outside.

She could hear heavy footsteps. She frowned glanced at the clock to see what time it was. She was just wondering, why at this time in the middle of the night there was still someone awake in the mansion.

She was even more surprised to see the time, it was already three in the morning. As she continued to listen the footsteps she heard she felt fear. She heard not only a heavy footsteps but also a chain being pulled by someone.

She pinch herself because she thought that she was just dreaming. One of her frequent dreams was a man carrying a large chain and lock. She even pinched again and again herself to confirm that she was not dreaming.

But she feels the pain in her each pinch, was the sign that she was awake. She wanted to open the door to peek outside. But fear gripped on her heart like her dream.

As she continued listening from outside she did not expect that someone would suddenly cover her mouth. To her shock she jumped up. She lost her balance and she stepped a large foot of man behind her.

"Sshh ..." She took a deep breath. And when the light turned on and illuminated the entire room. She could not speak immediately when she saw Alejandro holding her back.

"What are you doing there at the door at this time?" Alejandro asked.

"Ahm... I went in the toilet and when I came out I heard a noise from outside and then I was curious," Yani explained.

"Go back to sleep and you just fantasize about what you heard," Alejandro said.

Yani no longer insisted to Alejandro to believe what she said. But she knew in herself that was true.

Alejandro went back to sleep but Yani rolled over on the bed. She thinks a lot about what she heard. If it was just a dream the big question in her mind. The situation is now different from before. Is there a connection between what she dreamed then and what she heard now?"

She even tried to close her eyes but in her mind trying fo find out the answer in her question. What exactly is the meaning of her dream?"
