Chapter three
Mother's disapproval
David and Olivia’s relationship flourished like a well-tended garden. They reveled in each other’s company, cherishing every moment. No matter how chaotic David’s workdays became, he always spared time for Olivia. His thoughtfulness knew no bounds. He surprised her with loving gestures and gifts, called her before their days began, and sent sweet messages throughout the day. Occasionally, he even arranged for her favorite coffee to await her at the workshop.
Olivia reciprocated David’s love with equal fervor. She penned heartfelt love poems, adorned her living space with paintings of him.He was her ray of light, having had a difficult time growing up without her parents. David filled those voids, becoming her confidant, her muse, and her unwavering support.
As their bond deepened, they shared their innermost fears and dreams. Olivia was an attentive listener, absorbing David’s work struggles and offering sage advice. In turn, she revealed her artistic aspirations, and David encouraged her to chase her passion. Their communication was open and honest, each ensuring they understood the other’s perspective. David introduced Olivia to his family and friends, and she reciprocated by introducing him to her artist companions.
Yet, their happiness was abruptly disrupted. David’s mother, Barbara Barnes, had been observing their relationship with growing unease. She never voiced her concerns until she cornered her son alone one evening.
The grand foyer of the Barnes estate buzzed with guests sipping champagne, attending a charity gala hosted by Barbara. Olivia couldn’t accompany David due to prior commitments. As he moved through the crowd, his father, Richard Barnes, engaged in conversation with a group of businessmen. “Son, how have you been? And where is Olivia?” Richard called out.
“Good evening, Dad,” David replied. “Olivia has an important engagement with some clients.”
His mother’s stern gaze caught David’s attention. She excused herself from a group of guests and approached him. “David, we need to talk.”
“What’s wrong, Mother?” David braced himself.
Barbara’s eyes narrowed. “It’s that girl, Olivia. She’s not suitable for you. She doesn’t belong to our social circle.”
David’s irritation flared, but he held his tongue. His mother persisted. “Let’s discuss this in private.”
She led him to a secluded room away from prying eyes. The confrontation escalated as Barbara demanded that David sever ties with Olivia. “I expected more from you,” she snapped. “Not some cheap girl, but someone with class who can elevate your business prospects.”
David was very angry. He didn’t mince words. “Olivia is my choice, and she makes me happy.”
After the heated exchange, David felt drained. He couldn't face the crowd and the pretense of the charity event weighed heavily on him. Citing a headache, he excused himself and retreated to his childhood bedroom on the second floor. Alone in the quiet, he grappled with conflicting emotions. How could he defy his mother’s wishes and hold onto the woman he loved?
