I wanted this feeling of electricity running through my body to go away but he wouldn’t let go of me. I could feel my mind expanding and shrinking over and over like something was trying to break through and make room for itself.
“Thank you, but I can go inside myself and you can leave. I don’t think anyone is supposed to know about this place.” I spoke sternly toward him; it was hard to tell him to leave he smelt like pine needles and wet oak; usually the smell would repulse me but it was intoxicating to say the least. I didn’t want him to leave, his body was so sculpted and I could feel the ridges of his abs pressed against me, his face was beautiful, god like, his jaw was so sharp it could cut the tension easily. He has emerald green eyes and shoulder length black hair that was all pushed back except a few pieces hanging into his face.
“I’m not leaving until you explain what you mean by rare.” His voice was gruff light metal dragging across gravel.
“I... I... can’t...” I said sheepishly.
“You will, or I will sit outside until you do. No matter what comes. I will not leave.” He threatened.
I sighed and nodded “Fine” I rudely snapped at him.
He smiled as he walked inside my only safe place, my home. Without setting me down he locked the door; walked over to the couch and sat down with me still in his arm. “What do you want to know?” I groaned.
“What do you mean by rare breed and what is this shifter island?” he asked quickly.
I sighed and tried to sit up in his lap. “Shifter island is where the humans send anyone who shows shifter genes when they do their yearly genetic testing. They realized that the shifter gene isn’t always active at birth and can become active at any point in time so throughout the years since the war, they test everyone once a year. Those who show the shifter gene are quarantined before being shipped off to this island where they live in peace away from humans. Some cities used to kill those with shifter genes so that whatever happened before wouldn’t happen again.” I took a deep breath and looked up at him I could see the pain in his eyes. I wanted to comfort him, it must be hard being one of the few who were still here and not on the island. “I will shift on the next moon cycle, when my birthday comes.” I whispered. “Gran wanted to save me from being shipped off away from her like my mother was.” I scratched the back of my head uneasily as I explained the situation.
“Well, I am glad you didn't let yourself get shipped off.” he spoke almost in a monotone. “Do you know anything else about this island?”
“No, humans aren’t allowed to know where the elders send the shifters off to” I sighed. “It scares me honestly, my mom used to write, but I haven't heard from her since about 2 months after they took her. I was 4 at that time. No one really knew I existed.”
“I see.” He whispered.
We sat in silence for a while. He staired at the wall, putting his face in the crook of my neck. Electricity danced all over my skin.
Looking at me he grinned. “You managed to get me thinking about what happened to the other shifters but you didn’t explain what you meant about you are rare.”
My mouth dropped and I stuttered. “Uhhh.”
