Chapter 22

1098 Words
Mila's POV Luke keeps looking at me as we enter the office. Caedmon, Theo and Zach are there. The desk was destroyed, which made me take a deep breath. Before Caedmon could even ask, I tell them, Nyx has been contacting me. They all had somewhat of a reaction but kept silent, a flinch, eyebrows forrowed and Caedmon fidgeted in his chair. It was probably seconds, but it felt like an eternity in silence. The tension was palpable in the room as I said these words. Would they be mad at me for hiding this for so long? How long has this been happening? From where did she get a hold of you? She started reaching out to me a month after she left. I was called into the office on campus. That's when I received my first letter. There was no sender address so I knew she didn't want to be found. All the letters told me how she was, that she was safe and okay. This has happened for the last three months. She asked me to keep it between us, so I did. But this last letter was different. All she said was that I was in danger, that "they" were coming. I knew what was coming next, the questions that we avoided, the answers we kept to ourselves... Who's coming after you? The ones that held us for so long. Mila, said Zach, you have to be clear. Who's coming for you? Is Nyx in danger as well? My throat fell dry and so did my mouth. My hands trembled as I held tightly the box in my hands. This isn't easy for me, for us. We were part of a group of others like us. We were held in a facility with humans and other wolves. They worked together. I remember the name of the company because of some papers and tools they used, "BioLife". They were the ones that had me and did all the testing. As a wolf with no particular scent, they wanted to work on me even further. They have had Nyx for all her life (at least that I know). When Nyx decided to leave, it was because they were going to do other tests to me and they said that I would either succeed, or fail like others. That meant being terminated. I gave Nyx a reason to leave that place. So she took me, and now we are here, and they are coming back. I don't know if it's just for me or both us. Whatever it is, I think we are both in danger. Zach looked at Caedmon, who looked like his head could explode. His eyes were black. Moira told me he was angry and it would be best to leave. As she said this, Luke told me that he would take me to my room. I left the box with the letters there as Zach instructed, but I wanted them back. It was my way to keep in touch with her. I would read those often to get a sense of peace before I went to bed. Caedmon's POV Fck, Fck, Fck! Where the hell is Nyx?! She kept in touch with Mila but not with us! She just disappeared! I didn't hold against her what happened. I knew she had no control. Now, the only way I heard from her was because of Mila. If Mila wasn't in danger, Goddess knows if I would've ever heard from her again. I don't think I could take it, neither could Fenrir. And now, the thought of her being in danger and potentially losing her is driving me insane. BioLife, the same name that was on Nyx's lips the first time we met. I talked with Theo and Zach. A few minutes later, Luke comes back. We need to increase security and patrols. Theo, I'll leave you to organize your strongest. Zach, I need you to ensure protection duty for Mila, and I need to see if there's any way to track Nyx. Luke, I need you with me. We need to figure out more about BioLife as well as what pack is working with them. I can only hope that we can find Nyx and bring her back safely. Her sister needs her now more than ever, and so do I. Nyx POV I expected this to happen, but I wished otherwise. They wouldn't let their precious projects just go away, especially if it could mean that they would be revealed. I've kept on the move and in touch with one friend, my only confidant within the facility, Lucy. We had talked a few times on public phone services as she had left me with her number as we escaped. She had been assigned to care for Mila after the first few rounds of treatment. Eventually, she started seeing Mila as a daughter. She cared for me too, but it wasn't until they were about to do more testing on Mila that Lucy decided to intervene. If it wasn't for her removing me from my pod, I would never have been able to take Mila away. Knowing that they expanded their search meant that it would only be a matter of time until they found her, or us. I had to go back...for her... I just don't know how I'll react when I see him. Just thinking about him made everything within my body vibrate. I wanted him and couldn't fully understand why. I craved his blood and his touch was like a drug, and all I had was his hand! A week has passed and I'm finally on the last few train stops to make it to the town. High Crest, the town that was once my home. Instead of going back to the cottage, I opted for staying at the edge of pack territory. I wanted to ensure that my presence wasn't noticed. I would hunt little animals, squirrels or even rabbits so that I could feed. I was doing it more frequently, but after having a taste of Caedmon, it felt like nothing quenched me the same way that he did. I keep rotating from spot to spot around the area. A twig snaps and my eyes enhance my view. Looking around, I saw that there were three wolves surrounding me. Their smell was too obvious, it gave them away easily. I could hear their hearts beating steadily. Rookies, they truly didn't know much about the hunt. But they seem to not realize one thing: hunting is something I excel at.
