Marshall’s POV
“Really?” Derrick, my best friend leaned forward. I'd just told him that I found my mate.
“Mm”
“Who is she? Where is she?”
“Mm-mm, I can't tell you that one.”
He frowned. “Why? Now I'm curious. Why are you keeping her a secret?”
I sighed, regretting that I told him. Now I had to deal with his unending questions.
“I already told you it's a secret, so stop asking. It won't get you anywhere.” I stood up and stepped outside. He followed me and dropped his hand on my shoulder.
“I don't get why you're keeping her identity a secret even to me. Anyways, I'm so happy for you, man.”
“Captain, there's an intruder!”
“Who is it?”
“We don't know yet. But it's a lone wolf and not a rogue. It's racing towards the camp. We are running after it.”
“Good. Catch it before it gets here.”
“Yes, captain.”
The link closed.
“What is it?” Derrick asked.
“A lone wolf crossed the borders. It seems to be coming here.”
“Who could it be? Who would dare run into the border patrol camp?”
“Me.” Derrick and I looked behind us at once and met a girl.
“Do you have a death wish, girlie? What are you doing here?” Derrick asked her.
“Captain, we lost the wolf.”
My eyes studied the young she wolf. She was naked and fearless, leaves and figs hung on her hair. Her hands and feet were dirty. And she wasn't a rogue. She didn't smell like one.
“She's here.” I announced in the mindlink and sensed the shock of the other patrol guards in the link.
“How did she get here so quickly?” Derrick asked. He had heard my announcement in the mindlink.
“She's a smart one.” I studied the shewolf, “Why are you here?” I asked her, keeping my eyes on her face and refusing to look down her nude tiny frame.
“Judging from your looks you must be the captain.”
“So?”
“I bring an important message to you from the rogues but you must promise me that you won't kill me after I pass the message to you.”
“Mm,” One side of my lips curled up in a smirk, “I won't.”
“How do I know I have your word?”
“I am Marshall. You have my word.”
She looked around before keeping her gaze on me. For a second, I thought I saw fear in her eyes but she quickly mounted up courage again and looked at me.
“The rogue alpha asked me to give this to you.” She stretched her arm to me, holding a folded paper.
I took it from her and she vanished immediately, surprising everyone.
“How did she do that?” Derrick asked, shocked like the rest of the other guards.
“Check the borders for her tracks and relay back to me.” I ordered in the mindlink.
“Yes, captain.”
I unfolded the paper. Two words were inscribed in it but I couldn't read. I didn't have the privilege or time to undergo formal education. But I had a friend who could read.
I turned to Derrick. “Let's go inside.”
He nodded and followed me quietly. I turned around and gave him the letter.
“Read it to me.”
“Okay.” He took the paper from me and read, “Lucas Vick.” Then he looked up at me, “It's just a name. Why is the rogue alpha giving you a name?”
I took the paper from him, looking at it like I could read it.
“I don't know.” I muttered and an image of a mid-aged man talking flashed in my head.
A loud ringing in my head followed and I pressed my hand on my head and shut my eyes close as the pain in my head doubled.
“Marshall, what’s wrong?” I heard Derrick panicking.
“What's wrong, captain!” I heard another voice.
And suddenly, there was silence and darkness covered my vision.
***
‘Lukas Vick.’
My wolf, Clever, blocked my mind, stopping any further thought concerning the name.
‘Don’t try to remember your past. It's too risky.’
‘What's risky? Do you know who Lukas Vick is?”
‘Nothing good is going to come out of you knowing him.’
‘You know something I don't know, Clever?’
‘Get up. You're okay now. Let's go find our mate. We need to know how she's doing.’
‘You mean the Alpha's daughter? She should be fine now. I fed her her inhaler before she fainted.’
‘Let's see her with our eyes first. Only then can we be sure she's okay.’
‘Hey, you know we will have to reject her, right? Don't get too attached. She can't be our mate.’
‘She's our goddess-given mate. Reject her and you will never know who you really are.’
‘What do you mean?’
“MARSHALL!!!” I jolted awake at the loud cry in the room, only to find Derrick smiling at me.
“There you are. I know you've been awake.”
I sighed, sitting up. I felt light and free. The pain in my head had also disappeared.
“How long have I been sleeping?”
“Three hours.”
Damn.
I cracked my neck muscles before getting off the bed.
“Marshall,” Derrick called.
“What is it?” I asked casually, walking to the wardrobe and picking out a shirt and jogger pants to change into.
“Doc said something unusual.”
“What did he say?” I changed into the clothes I'd picked.
“He said you have amnesia.”
I paused.
I've been keeping my health history a secret since a child. Not even my best friend know I have amnesia.
“Is it true?”
“Maybe,” I dashed out of the room before he said another word.
There were a lot of things I didn't know about myself. I wasn't ready for the conversation Derrick wanted.
“Hey, where are you going?!” He screamed after me. I ran as fast as I could, ignoring him and leaving no tracks behind for anyone to follow.
‘Mate.’ Clever kept nudging in my mind until we reached Margaret's house.
There was no way I could go to the pack house asking for the alpha’s daughter. The only way I could see her was through Margaret.
I rang her door bell.
“Just a second,” Margaret responded and the door creaked open. “Marshall,” she called surprised.
“Come in,” She moved aside, allowing me to go in.
“Marshall, I'm so sorry for how things turned out last night. Whatever I have with Holly has—”
“How long have you been sleeping with each other?”
“Huh? Six years.” She looked down in shame.
Clever growled angrily in my head.
‘She made mate do it. Mate was just a child then.’
“Why did you do it? If I'm right about her age she was just twelve then.”
“I-I don't know how it started between us. Her mom always brought her to my house whenever she had a fight with the alpha. Sometimes, Holly would stay in my house for weeks before the Luna would come to pick her. I was dating a girl then and Holly happened to catch us one night f*****g. Actually, she's been watching us most of the time. I only happened to catch her that night. One day, I was drunk and she came to me, asking me to do to her what I do to my girlfriend. I couldn't resist. I was drunk and tipsy and…that was it.”
Clever snarled in my head. He wanted to tear Margaret apart for teaching our mate evil.
I scoffed. “You're unbelievable, Margaret. Imagine you were caught. You would have been dead by now.”
“We were very careful not to get caught.” She looked up at me, “I'm sorry, Marshall. That's all in the past now. It's over between me and Holly.”
“And you don’t care that she's hurting? She cried home under the rain last night. What if something had happened to her? Did you care about her feelings when you were leading her down this path?”
Margaret bursted into tears. “I'm sorry.”
“You should be apologising to her, not me.” She tried to come close to me, “Hold it.” She halted and I continued, “Call her. Tell her you want to see her now.”
“Why? You want her to come to my house so you can see her? I can't.”
My gaze turned to a glare.
She shivered in fear.
“I-I really can't. She went to Crescent Moon Pack this morning and she's not returning.”
Clever pushed forward. He was on edge.
“What do you mean by she's not returning?”
“Haven't you heard? Alpha Mike of Crescent Moon claimed her as his mate.”
‘SHE'S MINE!’ Clever roared.
I clenched my jaw, grinding hard. “But she's mated to me.”
“No one knows that. Even if they know, you will be forced to reject her. She's our Alpha's daughter and you're a rogue our Alpha accepted into the pack. Do you really think he will let his precious daughter be with you?”
She smiled confidently and took a step closer, “I guess not. Accept it, Marshall. You can't be with her but you can be with me.”
“f**k off! That's not happening.” I growled and dashed out of her house, running in my wolf form into the woods.
‘Let's go find mate. Mate belongs to us, not him.’
